8th July 1989
10th number one for Pet Shop Boys, out of 12 singles, plus a couple written/produced for Dusty and Liza. That’s pretty consistent for under 4 years. It’s Alright isn’t one of their own songs, but the video and message remain relevant to 2014. I can think of many politicians who should be forced to sit and watch it. Meanwhile, The London Boys club it up to 7, while Ain’t Nobody goes top 10 for the second time in 5 years. Yello are Blazin’ up to 16, pity it wasn’t a hit, while late legend Roy Orbison gets another Top 20 hit off his terrific posthumous album, California Blue.
De La Soul are new at 26, continuing the run of good singles with Say No Go (sampling Hall & Oates and others), and Aswad cover a 70’s MOR goodie and do it reggae well. Norman Cook pops in with a future Beats International hit, Won’t Talk About It but shhh that’s him under another name. Paul “Beatle” Somebody is in at 57 with one of his most-melodic singles in 5 or 6 years, the Beatlestastic This One, while soul great Roberta Flack is back again 17 years on from the first time ever I saw her face. Uh uh? Ooh Ooh! Comedy great Bette Midler lets the wind beneath her wings escape into the charts, and it’s not even slightly amusing! Rip-off! Apparently she’s had a cheque for over 100 dollars off a streaming site for over 5 million plays of her songs. Can’t say they aren’t generous. No, you really can’t. Karyn White takes a Superwoman into my charts, but I’ll take Supergirl (Graham Bonney), Superman (Laurie Anderson) or Superboy (yet to be written) over this one. Or the Blow Monkeys good Choice 2 places lower.
