The top 20 singles artists of the 1970s. For the purpose of this:
- Collaborations were counted for both artists so "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)" was counted both to Donna Summer and Barbra Streisand's totals. - Thin Lizzy however was not combined with "Parisenne Walkways" nor with "A Merry Jingle" with Phil Lynott having done lead vocals on all those songs, with Thin Lizzy themselves having 3 hits. - Paul McCartney had a solo hit "Wonderful Christmastime" and a number of hits with Wings which were not combined together. - "Rockpile" is not a single act here as the songs were credited either to Nick Lowe or Dave Edmunds and both of them appear in the top 20. - Michael Jackson had both solo hits and one with the Jacksons which have not been combined.
20. Sparks (3 hits, biggest "Beat The Clock") 19. Nick Lowe (2 hits, biggest "Cruel To Be Kind") 18. Jags (1 hit, "Back Of My Hand") 17. Sham 69 (3 hits, biggest "Hersham Boys") 16. Styx (2 hits, biggest "Babe") 15. M (2 hits, biggest "Pop Muzik") 14. Kenny Rogers (4 hits, including cross-overs at both ends. Biggest "Coward Of The County") 13. Ian Dury & The Blockheads (2 hits including a crossover at the start. Biggest hit "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick") 12. Donna Summer (5 hits, biggest "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)") 11. Roxy Music (3 hits, biggest "Dance Away")
10. Electric Light Orchestra (5 hits, biggest "Shine A Little Love") 9. Jam (3 hits, biggest "Eton Rifles") 8. Abba (5 hits, biggest "Does Your Mother Know") 7. Dave Edmunds (3 hits, biggest "Girls Talk") 6. Boomtown Rats (3 hits but one was a tail-end crossover and another crossing over at the end, biggest "I Don't Like Mondays") 5. Elvis Costello & The Attractions (2 hits, biggest "Oliver's Army") 4. Squeeze (3 hits, biggest "Up The Junction") 3. Supertramp (4 hits, biggest "Goodbye Stranger") 2. Queen (4 hits one crossing into the year, one an old album track. Biggest hit "Don't Stop Me Now")
1. Blondie (5 hits, biggest hit "Sunday Girl")
So let's see what would happen if we did aggregate the acts above:
- Combining Paul McCartney and Wings is not enough to get him into the top 20 - Adding Michael Jackson who on his own was 22nd with the one hit by the Jacksons brings him a total between Roxy Music and Donna Summer - All the Phil Lynott combinations give him a total just above that of Kenny Rogers. Combining the Greedies and Thin Lizzy alone is not enough, and counting the Greedies towards the Sex Pistols total doesn't bring them into the top 20 either. - Adding the totals of Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds and crediting it all to "Rockpile" would pull them up to #2 but they still wouldn't pass Blondie - Adding "Girls Talk" to Elvis Costello's total of songs he wrote places him just below Blondie by a small margin. (Not sure what other songwriters I could combine)

From UK singles "Rapture" became the first DNQ song for Blondie in my chart.

1979 has far more "depth" than 1974 so whilst a top 3 hit in 1979 isn't necessarily bigger than one in 1974, a #18 in 1979 might be equivalent to a #7 in 1974, the peak position of Abba's "Honey Honey".

Pretty much been through most of these now. Abba's album was actually very good. Also surprised I liked Tubeway Army's album. Fleetwood Mac though I had no patience for..
I was surprised how low the streaming rates for Blondie's album are. Two of the tracks on it had just over 170,000 streams. It was a clear attempt to cross genres and have a go at a bit of everything, even reggae. They didn't attempt rap until the next year when AutoAmerican contained Rapture. Doesn't always work, but "Slow Motion" is probably an under-rated song on it. "Shayla" is another good song on it, but that one has a reasonably high stream rate.

Top singles of the year, 150 to 101. The chart of the year is always based on points, I think 1979 is possibly more distorted than most as there were a couple of very strong periods, particularly February and around July-August and some weaker ones (the usual slow start but also Spring wasn't as strong as the periods mentioned)
150 Food For Thought - Barron Knights 149 Please Don't Go - KC & The Sunshine Band 148 Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now - McFadden & Whitehead 147 Highway To Hell - AC/DC 146 Working For The Yankee Dollar - Skids 145 The Diary Of Horace Wimp - Electric Light Orchestra 144 Good Times - Chic 143 Tears Of A Clown - Beat 142 I Was Made For Lovin' You - Kiss 141 Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground) - Jacksons 140 Don't Kill It Carol - Manfred Mann's Earth Band 139 Forever In Blue Jeans - Neil Diamond 138 Heartache Tonight - Eagles 137 Waiting For An Alibi - Thin Lizzy 136 Whatever You Want - Status Quo 135 Everybody's Happy Nowadays - Buzzcocks 134 Masquerade - Skids 133 Every Day Hurts - Sad Café 132 Hallelujah - Gali Atari & Chalav U'Dvash 131 Honesty - Billy Joel 130 Don't Stop Till You Get Enough - Michael Jackson 129 Street Life - Crusaders 128 Rockabilly Rebel - Matchbox 127 Voulez Vous - Abba 126 Cool Meditation - Third World 125 Jimmy Jimmy - Undertones 124 Offshore Banking Business - Members 123 We Don't Talk Anymore - Cliff Richard 122 London Calling - Clash 121 Escape (The Pina Colada Song) - Rupert Holmes 120 Knocked It Off - B.A. Robertson 119 The Sound Of The Suburbs - Members 118 Angel Eyes - Roxy Music 117 Confusion - Electric Light Orchestra 116 Living On The Front Line - Eddy Grant 115 I Want You To Want Me - Cheap Trick 114 Breakfast In America - Supertramp 113 Silly Games - Janet Kay 112 What A Fool Believes - Doobie Brothers 111 Sultans Of Swing - Dire Straits 110 Message In A Bottle - Police 109 Gangsters - Specials 108 Questions And Answers - Sham 69 107 Theme From Superman - John Williams & London Symphony Orchestra 106 Rapper's Delight - Sugarhill Gang 105 Don't Bring Me Down - Electric Light Orchestra 104 Friggin' In The Riggin' - Sex Pistols 103 Bright Side Of The Road - Van Morrison 102 In The Navy - Village People 101 The Runner - Three Degrees

In reality "Heart Of Glass" is a lot higher than 13th and "Pop Muzik" isn't as high as 8th, being #1 for 3 weeks but in the weaker part of the year. "Babe" shouldn't be as low as 16th either. "Diamond Smiles" was still in the top 5 at the end of the year and "I Don't Like Mondays" should be #2 behind Oliver's Army which is correctly positioned at #1, it was my favourite song that year.

That one is flatteringly high though the same way Heart Of Glass is too low.
1979 was strange because it peaked in February massively, then dropped and then picked up again in July.
So those that were hits in between, "Pop Muzik", "Dance Away", "Sunday Girl" and even "Up The Junction" to some degree are showing up higher in this list. The next number one after that was "Girls Talk" at the time it really picked up big time again, with "My Sharona" stuck at #2 behind it, a song that might have been #1 in the other months.
In my original chart I had "Lonesome Loser" reach #4 and now we had "Hold On" reach #5 about the same time. The timing of the hits, especially those in the US but also those that entered low and climbed slowly is often different now to then, and "Lonesome Loser" was a hit a bit later on as a US entry. "I Don't Like Mondays" reached the top pretty quickly in the UK and is showing as being a hit in my chart the same time it was originally. It's doing well at #4, the same position it was in the UK chart of the year, but in reality was #2.

Shared # 1 hits between NM and "Gražios Dainos" in 70s decade : Mary Hopkin - Knock Knock Who's There (1970) ABBA - Waterloo (1974) ABBA - Ring Ring (1974) ABBA - Knowing Me, Knowing You (1977) Blondie - Picture This (1978) Blondie - Heart Of Glass (1979) Blondie - Sunday Girl (1979)
I will check your 80s charts. Maybe we shared more # 1s in the next decade.
