It's the 1980s. Madness are doing "My Girl" on Top of the Pops with a big "1980" sign behind them.
Jon Anderson's voice is familiar - he was the lead singer of Yes (on their big 1977 hit "Wonderous Stories", the one many people would know, but of course they had many hits albums), but now we have him paired with Vangelis.
The Bee Gees get their last top 20 hit for 7 years but their presence will be felt in between in songs they write for others in which they also do backing vocals. Even this one felt like a poor performer in the chart at the time.
Steve Forbert - his only hit single, but "The Sweet Love That You Give (Sure Goes A Long Long Way)" got a fair amount of airplay but wasn't a hit. According to wikipedia it wasn't a single but according to discogs it was, so I'll believe discogs. (discogs suggests it was released in the UK in January 1980 and in the US at some point in 1979, but I think it was probably released in 1979 in the UK too, that's the year I heard it on the radio regularly, and when Romeo's Tune hit the US chart in early 1980 I knew his name).
Rita Coolidge is there just to make up the numbers, but the O'Jays had a dull ballad that I skipped over - a shame because they used to be good.
