This chart that has been finalised for a year now – about time I finished it up because time to start compiling the 2024 edition is rolling around fast...
50. SUPERSUCKERS - A Good Night For My Drinkin'
To the band, a long forgotten album track, not played live since 2004 (per setlist.fm). To me, a note-perfect, all-time great song, featuring in the top 106 in every top 200 but one since I discovered it in 2005.
49. THE F*CKWITS - Fun Police
Now the 'King Effers', probably because they got fed up with having to censor their band name in gig posters as I have in this countdown. With the simplest of riffs, but the most infectious of energy, one of the most compelling new pop punk songs I've encountered in some time
48. DOVER - In Hole
Fourth of five songs in this countdown by 'that Spanish band', this one from their first album 'Sister'. This serious earworm was a #3 second-highest new entry back in 2003 and has featured in every year's top 100 since then
47. THE IMPOSSIBLES - The Position
If "quiet-loud pop" is a genre, this must, despite its obscurity, be a quintessential example of it. A chorus for the ages.
46. OYSTERBAND - Our Lady Of The Bottles
Aptly, I first heard this folk-rock modern classic performed at a beer festival (GBBF 2009). The next year it entered at #5 in this countdown, and it has never since been out of the top 50.
45. LOADED 44 - No Time
"Wrong way on a one-way street / That's my life and I love it". The live band of the past few years for me -- I'll make a date to see them whenever they're near, next up being August at the Rebellion Festival pre-gig
44. ANDREW W.K. - Party Hard
In this countdown every year since 2002, a life-changing song in that having heard it on the Sunday in autumn 2001 the next morning I raced out to pick up the album from HMW. More than 20 years later, I haven't heard anything quite like it. Tremendous.
43. ARGYLE - Blame The Sun
Summer anthem 'par excellence' and previous Haven Contest entry.
42. AVICII - The Nights
Second song in a row to have featured in the top 100 for four editions in a row, having entered for the first time in 2016. A truly great summer anthem that deserves to maintain that status for many more years to come.
41. THE INTERRUPTERS - Outrage
The shortest song in the whole countdown, and third-highest new entry. "This will go down in history / As the age of outrage"
