I don't object to the idea of a winter World Cup. After all, why should some countries be ruled out of ever hosting it for something they can do nothing about? However, on top of all the non-footballing reasons for not giving it to Qatar, it shouldn't go to a country that has never come close to qualifying. They came within one win of qualifying in 1998. Had they won their final game against Saudi Arabia, they'd have topped their group.

Well that first 45 60 minutes has gone quite well...

Bet they wish the GK hadn't time wasted quite so much now, yes he had a bloody nose and was a bit dazed, but it was all time wasting, I mean a stretcher for a guy that was stood up kicking a ball a minute before and who is 4 yeards from a touchline, it's just ridiculous! Temp subs on and treat them off the pitch and keep the game going. Great goals by England and just need to make sure, no injuries (from getting kicked) or silly yellow cards now.

Here in the U.S. the commentary team is Ian Darke and Landon Donovan.
I’ve always liked Darke.

That is where var does my head in, Maguire bear hugged to the ground, ref doesn't need to look at it, tiny shirt pull that changed nothing because the player was blocked off, ref looks and gives a penalty. Thankfully it's a goal that affects nothing but goal difference, but in another 0-0 game that could be crucial, send the ref to look at everything, or nothing, give us consisitency and then we might be happy! Fantastic win, still not convinced by us defensively, see what the US and Welsh games bring, but couldn't get off to a better start!

A perfect start for England as they score six in a game for the second World Cup in a row. Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka (2), Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish were all on the scoresheet for England - none had ever scored at a World Cup before.

Very good performance by England but Iran did not live up to pre-tournament expectations.
Now for the U.S. to show up big time.

Jon Champion and Ally McCoist doing Senegal v Netherlands for ITV.
Laura Woods making her tournament debut as anchor, though I suspect Mark Pougatch will still be first choice.

Champion and McCoist have finally given up trying to pretend this is a good match.

An uninspiring Netherlands left it late against Senegal but goals in the 84th and 99th minutes mean they start with a win and go top based on disciplinary record.

Wales take a point from their first World Cup game in 64 years after a performance of two halves. USA dominated the first half and led through Weah but Wales improved after the break and earned a deserved draw through Gareth Bale's penalty. The result means England will be through to the last 16 if they beat USA on Friday.

I must have missed that in the rules of football that all Asian Arabic nations in this World Cup tournament get a free get out of jail card decision per match.
What should have been the first Ecuador goal being ruled out (to benefit the really poor Qatar) has been matched by that ridiculous decision to award Iran a consolation penalty, when the stonewall rugby tackle on Harry Maguire went unpunished in the first half.
If this nonsense continues for the rest of the tournament then I wont be against the growing rumours of UEFA & CONMEBOL breaking away together.

For the Iran one, not only was it not a penalty, I also don't see where the referee got ten minutes of stoppage time from. They shouldn't even have been playing by the time of that incident. The other two games today have had ridiculously large amounts of stoppage time as well.

I don't understand what's going on with the stoppage time either. The 14 minutes at the end of the first half of the England game was fair enough due to the keeper's injury but the 10 minutes at the end of the second was ridiculous. The same with the nine at the end of the Wales game.
For me, Iran's penalty was rightly awarded but England should have had one in the first half. VAR is supposed to remove any doubt rather then creating a whole load more.

Marcus Rashford's goal today made him the 50th player to score for England at the World Cup (not counting own goals).
The total number of players who've scored for England at a major tournament is now 67.

I wouldn't be surprised if some of the excessive stoppage time added at the end was as a result of the stoppage time gained from the 14 mins stoppage time in the 1st half. There was a few fouls committed in the stoppage time period and probably could have played further 2 mins in the 1st half.
Coupled with the Harry Maguire injury (which was a little farcical in itself), it makes a bit of sense where the 10 mins came from if that was right.
Also the TV director seemed to liked replaying the Iranian keeper's collision a few times more than he should whilst he was down but showed nothing of Harry Maguire injury in what we thought was concussion at the time.

Saudi Arabia pull off a monumental upset, beating one of the tournament favourites. Argentina took an early lead through a Lionel Messi penalty and had three goals ruled out for offside before half time. Saudi Arabia scored twice in quick succession after the break and subsequently out-worked and out-battled the two-time champions.

Thoroughly deserved by Saudi Arabia, even in the first half, I thought they looked lively and capable. Argentina needed to work out what to do to attack a high line, and failed. As for the large amounts of added time, it's brilliant, teams are constantly wasting time, all the refs are doing is adding on when players sit down saying they're injured when they're not, and when teams do pointless substitutions to run down the clock, so fair play to them. Blooming ITV commentator was going bananas when we went past 8 minutes in the Saudi game, despite the fact there had been another injury and substitution. I might do a little test with the Denmark game with a stop watch and see how much time gets added on with what I think it should be. It's good because when the ref actually raises his watch and says to the players I'm adding this on, they actually are!
