If you want to appeal to a wider audience, you need to record in a popular language. So English and Spanish in particular. Bjorn and Benny from Abba decided that they should write their songs in English for that purpose. "It's the language of rock and roll". I'm agree, but "Ring Ring" and "Waterloo" sounds good in Swedish too. The best way for the acts from European countries is the recording two versions of one album. In 1980 year ABBA recorded "Gracias Por La Musica" compilation on Spanish.
