#11. Donna Summer - I Don't Wanna Get Hurt (1989 #7)
The former Queen of Disco had had not much success since the early part of the 80s, apart the rather brilliant 'Dinner With Gershwin', which had been a top 20 hit in 1987, so she was ripe for a comeback. This was her second single with S/A/W, and like the first is perfect for Donna's silky vocals.
Album version not the single version I hope! The Phil Harding 12 inch remix beats them all!

#12. Hazell Dean - They Say It's Gonna Rain (1985 UK #58)
This one should've been huge! Well it was in South Africa where it reached the #1 spot, but I don't know what happened here, maybe it wasn't heavily promoted or something because it has got massive hit single written all over it. To be fair, Hazell's popularity had already waned by the time this was released - and I think she was lucky to get a resurgence three years later, but that's another story.
And still to this day, whenever it rains, they will play this on the radio here. Great song - my favourite Hazell Dean track.

#5. Hazell Dean - Who's Leaving Who (1988 UK #4)
I didn't realise this was a cover for quite a few years, but this classic was originally recorded by country singer Anne Murray in 1986, 2 years before Hazell's. I do think Anne Murray is very underrated as a singer, and her original of 'You Needed Me' far surpasses that of Boyzone's #1 cover, but I actually miles prefer Hazell's Hi-NRG version of 'Who's Leaving Who', and it remains one of my favourite S/A/W productions.

#4. Bananarama - Love In The First Degree (1987 UK #3)
The girls had had a couple of modest sized hits earlier in '87 with 'A Trick Of The Night' and 'I Heard A Rumour', but they totally smashed it with this pop masterpiece, which I still think is the best thing they ever did - with the possible exception of 'Robert De Niro's Waiting', which incidentally ties with this as their biggest UK hit.

I need to finish this!
#3. Lonnie Gordon - Happenin' All Over Again (1990 #4)
This club smash was originally intended for Donna Summer, and had the producers not fallen out with her she would have had another massive chart hit on her hands! Lonnie Gordon was given the song instead though, and totally smashed it out of the pan. I think it's as good as any other dance record released that year, and it simply should have been the start of an amazing career.

#2. Dead Or Alive - You Spin Me Round (Like A Record) (1984 UK #1)
There's not much separating any of the top 3 if I'm honest, and this was the one that broke all records at the time by taking a (then) record breaking 17 weeks to climb to the #1 spot, doing so in March of 1985 after being released the previous November. Dead or Alive were fronted by extroverted Pete Burns and had been releasing records since 1980. They finally scored a modest hit earlier in '84 with their rather decent cover of KC & the Sunshine Band's 'That's The Way I Like It', but it was this, their first record with S/A/W that they will forever be remembered for.

Lonnie is definitely in my top 5 too. A massive energetic demanding attention pop hit.

#1. Donna Summer - This Time I Know It's For Real (1989 UK #3)
I'm not sure how it's possible to not like this song, because in my view it is a 24 carat pop classic! It became Donna's biggest UK hit since 'No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)', her disco duet with Barbra Streisand, in 1979, and to my mind it's her best song that isn't 'I Feel Love' (I even prefer it to that one some days!).

Brilliant song, brilliant pop album. Would be my first choice as well - I could never get bored of this song. Thank you Whitneyfan for your countdown.
