1983 is blowing hot and cold, we have a packed playlist of classics, then this one with very little, followed by another one full of classics and then another one with very little.
So Sunfire here best of a mediocre bunch with the few good ones on the playlist on next week's chart but even those are not really classics. There are 2 versions of "Young Free And Single", the other with a female singer which came along a few weeks later. I don't know if she and the singer from Sunfire hooked up so they were no longer single. I'm not sure how frequently that phrase was used before the song, but Gary Davies popularised it for a while.

"Run For Your Life" by Bucks Fizz is one of their best songs but on the whole I said it's a weak playlist (combined with that of last week) after we had a period so strong that songs like "Communication" by Spandau Ballet could only reach #16 and we see other cases of good songs not getting into the top 10. Meanwhile the top 10 we do have is almost frozen but there's a bunch of big ones coming along next week and the week after.

Finally a bunch of new songs with some classics in it. Possibly surprising to many that the Style Council is the highest entry above New Order and Altered Images but that follows what happened at the time.
My latest 1983 playlist also has the Style Council on it but it's way down the list, as is Phil Collins. Nick Heyward is also on the list but a lot higher up and Ultravox is also on the current playlist.

Bonnie Tyler fails to move over for the Style Council, and similarly Bucks Fizz climb up to #3 ahead of New Order climbing to #4. Although New Order will probably overtake Bucks Fizz next week, it will have to stay ahead of David Bowie's classic entry "Let's Dance" if it is going to make progress. Also entering this week, Michael Jackson's most "rock" song to date featuring Eddie Van Halen on guitar. Subsequently he made further use of rock guitarists with Slash playing on both Black Or White and Give In To Me one the Dangerous album. (Apparently it was the idea of Quincy Jones to include a rock track on Thriller and this was the result).
In addition to Michael Jackson, we have an entry by Prince, and Tracie appears on 2 songs in the chart as she's also featured on the song at #2 this week. Duran Duran released a song that wasn't going to be on any album and thus it entered the UK chart at #1, but they've done far better songs than this one. In the combi-chart, which started when Hungry Like The Wolf was in the chart, that and the two that followed both got to #1 but this one failed to make it - New Order in particular was just too strong for it.

The first number one for the Style Council but the 3rd to feature Paul Weller who topped the chart twice with the Jam. Up until the end of 1979 the Jam outperformed on this chart, and after Going Underground got to #1 on both charts they generally did better in the UK chart where they 3 more number ones.
U2 had a similar story - their last UK #1 as late as 2005 but their first only in 1988 when they'd already topped the NM chart many times. Their first NM #1 would be in 1984 and their last in 1992. They get the highest of what is not a particularly great set of new entries, which also includes Phil Collins who has 2 songs in the chart.

The Corinne Hermes song was on my playlist, it's unlikely to chart. Luxembourg had my top song in 1980 but not this year.
My top song in 1983 was Danijel Popovic representing Yugoslavia with Dzuli and then Ofra Haza (Israel) with Chai.

The year that had the most Eurovision entries in my chart was 2010, but that is because the chart rules were different then and all of them were eligible. MangA for Turkey was my top Eurovision entry that year and peaked at NM #4. In spite of the number of entries that charted, Josh Dubovie was not among them.

The year that had the most Eurovision entries in my chart was 2010, but that is because the chart rules were different then and all of them were eligible. In my situation it were 1971 and 1974. In 1971 year three Eurovision entries became # 1 hits (Austria, Norway, UK). Marianne Mendt - Musik (4 weeks at # 1)Austria won two times (Another case is a sensation in 1982 year, when Mess with "Sonntag" beat big European hit "A Little Peace"). My ESC songs ranking - 2010 (39 songs)1. Anna Bergendahl - This Is My Life (Sweden) - 8 2. Lena Meyer-Landrut - Satellite (Germany) - 8 3. Kuunkuiskaajat - Tyolki Ellaa (Finland) - 7 4. 3+2 - Butterflies (Belarus) - 7 5. Feminnem - Lako Je Sve (Croatia) - 7 8. Josh Dubovie - That Sounds Good To Me (United Kingdom) 37. Manga - We Could Be The Same (Turkey)

The Style Council keeps the top position ahead of David Bowie, whilst Culture Club get the highest new entry. This single peaked at #2 in the UK behind David Bowie but later on the positions were reversed. In the UK that was Culture Club's next hit, but on this chart there will be at least one other in between.
The original of Simply Red's debut hit enters at #19.

Not as bad a cover as I was expecting, but that's probably because it doesn't harm that song too much to do it that way. Doing "Save A Prayer" in that style would be a disaster.
The song in the chart whose cover is more famous than its original is the one at #19.
