It's year-end!
Goodbye to 2023, which saw 24 FragChart #1s (two more than last year). Here's how the other main stats compare:
Longlist length: 2887 songs (last year: 2514) Total songs in weekly playlists: 1383 - over 26 per week! (last year: 1176) New songs charted: 661 - 12.7 per week (last year: 604)
Each of these stats is around 10% more than last year's figure, but with the demise of everynoise.com, I fear that it may be difficult to reach those heights in 2024. Nevertheless, we keep going, as FragChart approaches its 25th anniversary.
Here's the first section of my year-end chart:
200 - 176
200 Waves - Kula Shaker (#11, August) 199 Orbit - Dream Wife (#9, May) 198 Troubled Son - Miles Kane (#10, May) 197 A Charmed Society - The Young Hearts (#15, June) 196 Falling Out Of Love - Saytr Play (#15, November)
195 On the Contrary - Steven Neufeld (#16, June) 194 Undercover Lovers - Little Man Tate (#19, September) 193 Shopping for Tattoos - bis (#19, February) 192 If You're Blue - Joan Jett & The Blackhearts (#14, May) It's Always Sunny in Quarantine - Space Monkey Mafia - skipped as it was in last year's top 100 191 On Your Own - Her Burden (#16, July)
190 Mayday Mayday - The Clockworks (#13, October) 189 jessica - DAYTIME TV (#7, June) 188 $1 One Vote! - The The (#13, March) 187 Gothenburg City - City Saints (#5, January) 186 Never Be Mine - Shambolics (#24, September)
185 Starting Over - Paint Fumes (#20, February) 184 Eleanor Rigby - Palaye Royale (#14, January) 183 Ruby Off The Rails - Sarah and the Safe Word (#16, February) 182 No Fakes Allowed - Out Of Love (#13, July) 181 Time of the Year - Bullitt (#21, April)
180 Oblivion - Billy Liar (#16, October) 179 The Answer - Johnny Marr (#9, November) 178 Shiner In The Dark - Royal Blood (#16, September) 177 Whisky O' - b*st*rd Bearded Irishmen (#10, March) 176 COBRA - CRYSTAL (#20, August)

Don't think I charted any of those songs as such but I loved the Dream Wife album.

175 - 151
We start to see a few top 10 hits here, notably 'Mugged In Nambour', which is still in my top 10 and would surely be higher if it were released a few months earlier. The Hives manage to just miss the top 150 not once, but twice! They do have more to come, though, unlike The Foo Fighters.
175 We'll Be Alreet - Bandit (#20, July) 174 Hey Mario - Bowling For Soup (#13, April) 173 Oblivious - Young Rising Sons (#16, January) 172 Don't Let It Out - The Sherlocks (#13, April) 171 Play My Favourite Song - Tigercub (#14, March)
170 Upside Down - The Rosies (#12, May) 169 Trippin' The Night - Royal Republic (#18, July) 168 Hole In My Head - Laura Jane Grace (#8, December) 167 I Gotta Feeling - STONE (#23, June) 166 Never Going Under - Circa Waves (#13, January) Skipping 'Stress' by bis from last year's top 100
165 Go - Debt Neglector (#8, October) 164 Mugged in Nambour - The Wolston Butchers (#4, December) 163 HORROR SHOW - Hot Milk (#8, April) 162 This World - The Raging Nathans (#18, January) 161 Under You - Foo Fighters (#12, May)
160 Nothing's Gonna End Us Till The Aliens Do It - PLAIINS (#12, June) 159 Columbia - The Young Rochelles (#16, March) 158 I Want You - The Buoys (#6, March) 157 I'm A Fire That You Can't Put Out - LostAlone (#16, October) 156 Beer Problem - Cody Hibbard (#15, July)
155 Stay A Little Longer - Wolfmother (#9, May) 154 Skal - Miracle Of Sound (#12, March) 153 Headlights - James and the Cold Gun (#14, July) 152 Bogus Operandi - The Hives (#8, May) 151 Trapdoor Solution - The Hives (#6, August)

150 - 126
Steven Neufeld had a rather successful year; he has two entries here but there's more to come higher up. As is often the case, this set contains a mixture of established FragChart denizens (Tusky, Two Door Cinema Club, Ash) together with the odd newcomer (The Frights, Superchunk).
150 LEFT(me)RIGHT - Steven Neufeld (#14, September) 149 Buzzkill - His Lordship (#14, April) 148 Babybird - Tusky (#9, September) 147 Wake up Call - Voodoos (#8, January) 146 Bleed Me Dry - Electric Enemy (#15, January)
145 Sure Enough - Two Door Cinema Club (#11, October) 144 Power of the Triforce - DragonForce (#14, October) 143 Invisible Man - Guilty Party (#11, April) 142 Like A God - Ash (#7, July) 141 Suburban War - The Grow Ops (#10, January)
140 Cruel State of Mind - Black Water County (#7, August) 139 MANA - Dead Pony (#4, July) 138 GOSSIP (feat. Tom Morello) - Måneskin, Tom Morello (#8, January) 137 The Warriors Beneath Us - The Go Set (#17, February) 136 She's On It - Her Burden (#8, April) Skipping Tough Luck - Mayleaf from last year's top 100
135 Emotion - The Velvet Hands (#12, July) 134 The Drummer’s in Trouble! - The Frights (#4, May) 133 February Punk - Superchunk (#12, September) 132 Six Senses - Steven Neufeld (#6, July) 131 Mountains At Midnight - Royal Blood (#6, June)

125 - 101
Just missing out on the top 100 are The Dollyrots, although they're another band with more to come, alongside Bad Advice and The O'Reillys And The Paddyhats.
Belle & Sebastian reach the year-end top 200 for the first time since 2006, when they had a trio of entries in the top 50.
125 Last Days Of Summer - The Hallingtons (#9, September) 124 Compromise - MID CITY (#9, February) 123 Good Time - Danko Jones (#8, June) 122 ONE TIME - BONK! BONK! (#12, September) 121 Don't Trust Your Government - Stay Out, Quin Manchester (#5, February)
120 We Will Dare - Dwarves, Madd Lucas (#10, October) 119 Hard 2 Get - Bad Advice (#13, August) 118 Never Ending Moment - Des Rocs (#6, May) 117 Irish Summer Nights - The O'Reillys and the Paddyhats (#5, August) 116 She's My Baby - The Boogietraps (#4, March)

Into the top 100 we go!
100 - 91
100 i can't get my sh*t together - Baby Queen (#7, November) 99 Who The Hell Am I? - NOBRO (#17, November) 98 Tell Me - The Dollyrots (#8, June) 97 Blacked Out - The Drowns (#15, November) 96 Kiss Of Death - Bad Advice (#7, September)
95 everybody knows it - Halflives (#8, February) 94 The World Outside (Is Gonna Be the Death of Me) - The Cog is Dead (#4, August) 93 Shovel in His Hands - The View (#8, May) 92 Tightrope (Walking on a Wire) - The Luka State (#2, March) 91 Voodoo Science - Demob Happy (#6, February)
The top 100 starts with a pretty pure pop effort from Baby Queen, with an honest view of masking mental health issues. She's one of four female vocalists in this set, with NOBRO and The Dollyrots recognised FragChart names, and Halflives making their debut.
Five of these artists have reached the year-end top 100 before - four of them exactly once. The Dollyrots were #6 in 2019 with 'Everything', followed by #17 last year ('Alone Again (Naturally)').
The View had a number of FragChart hits in the mid-noughties, but only 'Same Jeans' made the year-end top 100, reaching #22 in 2007.
More recently, NOBRO reached year-end #5 in 2020 with 'Marianna', The Cog Is Dead's Across The Sea reached #31 in 2021. The Luka State beat their mark of #100 ('Feel It', 2020).

85 Happy When It Rains - Kepi Ghoulie (#10, January) 84 Nothing Is As Good As They Say It Is - Sparks (#3, June) 83 Spellbinding - The Smashing Pumpkins (#3, April) 82 Already Over - Mike Shinoda (#6, October) 81 Waiting For The Magic To Show Up - LostAlone (#3, September)
A varied set, including a Jonah-like story song at #89, some catchy folk/punk at #87, and at #84, a lament from a newborn deciding they were better off before being born!

60 - 51
60 Pigment - Steven Neufeld (#3, July) 59 Imposter - The Ramonas (#3, August) 58 Not Your Soldier - Rews (#3, May) 57 Screaming for a Change - The Iron Roses (#3, July) 56 Drink up, boys! - The Mistakes (#2, October)

Top 5 hits all the way, as you might expect from this area of the chart. Steven Neufeld and The Iron Roses continue their strong debut years - although neither will surpass the Randalls' debut in 2021, where they had three in the top 30. 'Ramona' is their fifth year-end top 100 hit overall, with one more to come this year.
Seeing 'The Cult of Dionysus' here is interesting now that we as a family have started watching the 'Percy Jackson' TV series.

20 - 16
Sum 41 have the highest-placed hit from outside the top 10, with 'Landmines' peaking at #12 but continuing to grow on me - it's their first appearance in the top 20 since 2001. Lawmaker and The Young Rochelles still have more to come.
20 Landmines - Sum 41 (#12, October) 19 Seven Inch - Randells (#1, February) 18 No Big Loss - Lawsuit Models (#3, March) 17 Teacher's Pet - The Young Rochelles (#2, April) 16 Ashes to Ashes - Lawmaker (#1, January)
YEC histories: Sum 41 2001: Fat Lip (#9), In Too Deep (#97) 2002: What We're All About (#38), Still Waiting (#62), Motivation (#68), In Too Deep (#101) 2003: The Hell Song (#68) 2019: Out For Blood (#21), 45 (A Matter Of Time) (#47) 2022: Inflame The Light (#71)

15 - 11
15 Lil Bit - Moldy Roses (#3, May) 14 Stop The World - NOT (#1, January) 13 Headstuck - Steven Neufeld (#1, May) 12 This is Family - Kids on Fire (#1, September) 11 Awkward Feeling - Dead Nature (#2, August)
It's been a very strong year, and none of these songs would have looked out of place in the top 10 - I've had a hard time separating some of them!
California outfit Moldy Roses make their chart debut with this pop-punk tune. In a vaguely similar vein come NOT, who spend a couple of weeks at #1 at the start of the year.
It's been a big debut year for Steven Neufeld, and this is his first and best-so-far, rife with introspective self-deprecation: "I'm the dust in your vacuum, so please dump me out".
Kids on Fire are another group to make their YEC debut, with sweary anti-racist punk: "Hate's not welcome here".
If you liked the Arcade Fire, then check out Dead Nature - they had five weeks at #1 back in 2018 with 'Fire In Your Soul', and are very unlucky to miss out on the top 10 this year, despite "only" peaking at #2.
YEC Top 100 histories: Steven Neufeld 2023: Headstuck (#13), Pigment (#60), Six Senses (#132), Left (Me) Right (#150), On The Contrary (#195)
Dead Nature 2019: Fire In Your Soul (#3) 2023: Awkward Feeling (#11), Parasite (#25)

10 - 6
10 I`m A Timebomb - Bad Advice (#1, January) 09 Truth Hurts - Brixton Alley (#1, September) 08 Scapegoat - Saturday's Heroes (#2, November) 07 Fractured Fairy Tale - The Young Rochelles (#2, November) 06 Back To Bed - Brixton Alley (#1, May)
From Dresden & Los Angeles, Bad Advice burst onto the scene in January, with their upbeat "California punk" debut 'I'm A Timebomb' spending two weeks at #1. Their second single, 'Reminds Me Of You' matched that, and came in at year-end #31. They still had time for two more hits, with 'Hard 2 Get' reaching #13, and 'Kiss Of Death' #7.
Despite the name, Brixton Alley are not from London - they're the latest Australian act to reach my year-end top 10, doing so twice!
Sandwiched between their two chart-toppers are two songs that stopped at #2 late in the year, both stuck behind the same song ('Oh Yeah (Teenage Dreams)' by Ash) but continuing to grow on me through December and into January. Melodic punk rockers Saturday's Heroes are from Sweden and were unknown to me before a few months ago. New Yorkers The Young Rochelles have been around for a bit longer, and are fronted by Ricky Rochelle, who was successful (in my chart at least) with 'Don't Put The Chimp In Charge' a few years back.

I have no idea what you're talking about, so here's a bunny with a pancake on its head.

#5: Monday Morning - Lawmaker #1, June; chart run: [48, 31, 26, 6, 2, 1, 2, 2, 6, 12, 19, 37, 74]
Rise and shine! It's a typically cynical, shouty and sweary anthem for disgruntled or disinterested workers.

#4: Something - Samiam #1, March: [28, 9, 1, 1, 1, 3, 5, 4, 4, 4, 7, 14, 26, 55, 62]
The third California-based band so far in my top 10, pop-punk act Samiam have apparently been around since 1988, but this is the first song I've heard from them. It left quite an impression in the spring, spending two entire months in my top 5.

#3 A Little Shake - Broadway Calls#1, [17, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 6, 10, 14, 21, 39, 52, 70]More from the West Coast - Broadway Calls are from Oregon, although they're one of many songs here to have come straight from Milliways's chart. Catchy and upbeat, this one got into my head straight away and has rarely left since.

#2: Damage Control - Ice Cold Killers [17, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 11, 19, 33, 40, 51, 75]
Yet another almost-unknown American act: this is straight-up punk from New York. It's one of those tracks that wastes no time in getting going, instead launching into a foot-tapping riff that barely lets up for three minutes, with a punchy call-and-response chorus.
