10. KEEP US CONNECTED CELIA ROSE GOODING 2 CHART RUN: 3-2-4-6-10-12-13-16-25-32-34-40-54-65-73-79-81-91-92- From the first ever Star Trek musical episode, "Keep Us Connected" features the superb vocals of Celia Rose Gooding, playing the younger version of Uhura in the prequel series "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" which relates the earlier years of the Enterprise before Kirk took the command seat. Affected by beings from another dimension, the crew find themselves unable to communicate unless it's via emotion-revealing songs and this beautiful number sees Uhura opening up about how lost she feels in life, but how valued she is in the crew.

9. IN ECSTASY SHED SEVEN FEAT. ROWETTA 2 CHART RUN: 26-14-6-2-2-2-2-2-4- Shed Seven returned with material from their 2nd brand new album in this, the second half of their near-thirty years of chart action, and "In Ecstasy" was the third new single since 2017-18's releases from "Instant Pleasures". It was their 22nd hit single and their 22nd top 20, 21st top 10 and 17th top 5 hit. They have reached #1 on three occasions (all in 1996!) and also have 5 #2s.

8. BARBARIC - Blur 1 (3) CHART RUN: 9-4-3-2-1-1-1-5-5-6-9-14-20-25-29-40-49-59-63-70-75-75- "Barbaric" became Blur's third #1 of 2022 and their 18th #1 in total, bringing them to the joint 1st position for most #1s on my chart. Across their career, they have landed 34 hit singles, all but three of which have made the top 5. From their #1 album "The Ballad of Darren", this upbeat number sounded terrific performed live at Wembley this summer.

7. CEILINGS - Lizzy McAlpine 1 (5) CHART RUN: 62-31-23-11-8-3-1-1-1-1-1-4-4-5-8-10-15-20-26-38-55-62-68-70-70-71-72-74-80-88-89-90-92-100-100 Spending 5 weeks at the top earlier in the year, "Ceilings" became Lizzy's 2nd chart-topper after 2022's sombre "Doomsday". Equally emotionally devastating, "Ceilings" is her 4th hit and 4th top 15 hit too.

4. EVERYONE'S A GURU NOW - Saint Motel 1 (3) CHART RUN: 1-1-1-5-4-5-6-7-7-10-10-10-11-11-14-18-19-20-27-33-38-49-60-65-70-73-77-83-87-89-89-94-95- Saint Motel first debuted in 2014 on my chart, with the colossal "My Type" which spent 10 weeks at the top of the chart and went on to become one of my favourite songs of the whole decade. It has been followed up by 19 more chart hits, with all but one of them going top 10 and 5 making it to the top, across 2016's "Move", 2017's "Born Again" and 2022's "It's All Happening".

3. NOWHERE GAME - Patrick Wolf 1 (5) CHART RUN: 26-8-3-3-3-1-1-1-1-1-2-2-3-3-6-7-8-10-15-18-24-29-31-4-23-34-37-40-45-48-53-57-61-71-75-76-85-95-97-97-94-96-94-97-98-96-98-98- Patrick Wolf debuted on my chart with 2007's "The Magic Position", which peaked at #3 in an initial 16 week run. It's since returned to my chart twice more, tieing in with live performances I've been lucky enough to be at, but whilst its eventual 26 week run is impressive, it's nothing compared to his 4 chart-toppers. "Nowhere Game" has spent 48 weeks on the chart and counting, whilst his first three "Time of My Life", "The City" and "House" have racked up 125, 42 and 33 weeks respectively. He has spent 19 weeks at the top in total.

2. SHATTER - Maggie Rogers 1 (4) CHART RUN: 55-8-1-1-1-1-2-2-2-4-4-5-6-8-10-16-20-30-39-50-55-55-58-58-66-78-82-85-84-86-74-73-78-82-89-90-91-95 A chart debut for Maggie Rogers, "Shatter" debuted in January of 2023 and soon became one of the biggest hits of my year, spending 4 weeks at the top and hanging on for 38 weeks in the chart. Its energetic and anarchic rock/pop vibes make it a strange mix of love song and rather aggressive cry for help! With background vocals from Florence (of Machine fame), this is a classic in the making.

1. LOOK FOR THE LIGHT - Cast of Only Murders feat. Meryl Streep & Ashley Park 1 (9) CHART RUN: 3-2-2-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-4-5-6-7-8-9- Spending an unbeatable 9 weeks at the top, this stellar track from chart newcomer Meryl Streep (and Ashley Park) is the centrepiece of the third season of the murder mystery comedy drama "Only Murders in the Building" which features the acting (and sometimes singing) talents of core trio Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez. The previous seasons had focused on the three solving crimes whilst also podcasting their findings without very much in the way of musical accompaniment, but for this latest season, a failed theatre venture (the lead is murdered!) is reinvented as a musical with huge numbers from the pen of Benj Pasek & Justin Paul, Sara Bareilles, Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman, and Michael R. Jackson meaning these are instantly hummable, sometimes belt-outable Broadway staples. The beauty of this song, my favourite of the year, is that Meryl's character is a failing actress at the end of an unremarkable career, being revealed to be a mesmerising singer, with her new-costar (played by Park) unable to resist joining her in a showcase of the theatre show's new songs. That this falls fairly early in the season and is barely repeated throughout the season is a testament to its power and the fact that the whole scene takes on a new meaning when the twists and turns of the case are unveiled is truly genius.
