Something a bit heavier... KittieNot a new band at all! If you've been following heavy metal at all over the past two decades you'll have heard of this Canadian four-piece, founded in 1996. I was reminded of their existence twice over the past year - firstly when Poppy's amazing cover of 'Spit' appeared last year, and then very recently when it was announced they have signed to Sumerian Records (incidentally also Poppy's label) and this utter face-melter of a single came out. Presumably there will be a new album at some point soon.

HelgaAnother Swedish five-piece, Helga are pretty new, their debut came out last year and it's... definitely music. Ostensibly a metal/post-metal band, I would honestly recommend this album to anyone mildly curious; it strikes the perfect balance of tuneful and experimental without being too meandering and features lots of folky and indie influences as well. This particular song, for instance: starts out a bit post-metal, goes into something like Heilung, but then tell me the closing minute or so doesn't sound like Wolf Alice Bonkers, but it works!

VinterseaAnother metal band, these guys (and girl) were formed in 2014 in Portland, Oregon under the name Asterion (presumably no connection to Baldur's Gate though I have no idea lol). Fronted by the incredible Avienne Low who possesses a chameleon-like ability to shift between clean vocals and growls, this progressive black metal band finished high on my albums end-year ranking with their third release, Woven Into Ashes.

They Watch Us From The Moon!A relatively young band, They Watch Us From The Moon! are Kansas-based purveyors of psychedelic cosmic doom, but with unexpectedly rich and soulful female vocals courtesy of frontwomen Luna Nemeses and Nova 1001001. Their debut album came out last year and was a lot of fun.

The BeachesFounded in 2013, I had somehow completely missed this Canadian indie/pop-rock band until last year! Didn't enjoy the album Blame My Ex quite as much as I hoped but the singles were excellent, especially 'Blame Brett', which was one of the catchiest bops of the year. Recommended if you like The Aces.

healthylivingThis Scottish-based post-metal/shoegaze project released their debut album, Songs of Abundance, Psalms of Grief in April last year. It took me a while to get to it but I absolutely loved it, again in no small part thanks to the astounding talents of frontwoman Amaya López-Carromero. 'Dream Hive' in particular is excellent and very listenable.

Chelsea WolfeCalifornian singer-songwriter who has been releasing dark, brooding, gothy music of various genres since 2010. Her seventh and latest album, She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She, just came out a few weeks ago and is a feast of moody, industrial-infused electronica.

Still CornersDream-pop duo who formed in 2007. I think I'd been sporadically aware of them on and off, but was reminded of them in spring 2022 when the video for 'Far Rider' came out and I just fell in love with its chill, desert-rock vibes. A new album is out pretty soon.

CryptaBrazilian four-piece death metal band founded in 2019. Last year was my year of learning to love death metal and one of the bands that really helped was this lot. Their second album, Shades of Sorrow, came out in August and the musicianship across the entire record is just amazing. 'The Other Side Of Anger' was the track that hooked me but 'Lord Of Ruins' is another standout.

Lucifer(Not a one-woman band, but frontwoman Johanna Sadonis has apparently been the only constant member since they formed in 2014 so is the only one I'm confident including a photo of!) Occult rock with a retro vibe. I discovered them towards the end of last year; their latest album, Lucifer V, came out in January and is pretty enjoyable.

Picture ParlourAnother very new band who I know a few people are aware of! Formed in Manchester and fronted by Katherine Parlour, they are one of the newest bands I've mentioned in this thread but have already attracted a bit of attention, having recently toured in support of The Last Dinner Party. I avoided them for ages because I thought their debut single was going to be a cover of one of my least-favourite Beatles songs, but it's actually pretty great.

Think that takes us up to 25 (matching what I had in my 2022 advent calendar) so I'll wrap it up here! Feel free to share your own picks if there are any of your favourite recent female/female-fronted acts I missed Closing out with an honorary mention - she isn't her band's frontwoman, but guitarist Reba Meyers of Code Orange has such an amazing voice, as was demonstrated on this track last year. Easily the highlight of an otherwise slightly meh album.

Great thread. I'm working my way through those I don't already know.
Mostly too noisy for my delicate taste, but I enjoyed Myrkur.

Halestorm* are pretty good! Not one I know a ton about but definitely worth a mention. *autocorrect changed to Halesworth sounds like a posh version!

Be rude for me not to take this chance to post something by my favourite musical discovery of the last 20 years.
