I can't even understand what the purpose of the exercise is. We're powerless to help so why are we not allowed to forget about this story, when the likelihood of finding the poor girl alive and well (let alone in the UK!!) is slim to none.

I can't understand this either. What value does it add to finding her?

Where is the money actually going? There are hundreds if not thousands of missing children - hopefully this is to aid charities for all of them, not just Maddy.

Sounds like a really bad cash in on the media attention surrounding her disappearence.

To be honest, it is all getting a bit tireing. there are thousands of people who go missing every week in the UK. Why are we not hearing about them. The official organisation for the missing people in the UK can well do with the money thats been raised on a weekly basis to help survive. Would we have the situation we have if the parents werent across the road feeding their faces? ? I hope they find Madeleine safe and well, but what is getting overdone in the Uk cant surely make a significent change considering she is probably in another country.

It's all getting a bit much, I understand they want to keep it in the media, but is Madeleine in this country, if not, why do we need to keep hearing about it? What gives that family any more right to have their missing child in the news than any other family?

What gives that family any more right to have their missing child in the news than any other family? she's white and she's cute... she's also abroad so it keeps the press in holidays. When the two girls from Soham went missing in August 2002 there was also a black kid from Brixton went missing the same day. He was found dead two weeks later - his story managed to make two headlines and that was it. Cute white kids sell papers, black kids don't.

Well, just for once I'm in agreement with most of what has been said here!
Dreadful idea.

i think the thing is with this, is not that madeline isn't important, it's just that - there's loads of kids that go missing everyday - if you were a parent, would you leave your kids alone in hotel room on their own...EVER!? Why the hell did people start donating such ridiculous amounts of money to help save one girl? Why has this girl 'captured the heart' of the nation - and i don't think it's a racial issue, re: damiola taylor, steven lawrence....although, it was a murder they were investigating...anyway - as i said, i hope madeline/maddy/girl with the stupid irresponsible parents is found safe, alive and well, but i can't help thinking with the money they've had donated in search of her, they oculd use it to actually find lots of other missing children...

How can people get over-emotional about someone they don't even know? No disrespect to her, but I'm getting bored to death of seeing some of my buddies on myspace and bebo putting up videos appealing for her with songs like Chasing Cars added to them.
But to have a new version of a great song from one of the greatest films of the 1980's been re-done for this cause, I find that atrocious.

I think it's a really tacky idea too, but I think the issue is that she isn't a "missing" child per se, she's clearly been kidnapped and is only four years old.
