Arsenal 0 Middlesborough 1 In case anyone didn't know, the smoggies is the Newcastle and Sunderland supporters friendly term for Boro supporters! Comes from the area having a high density of chemical etc works - hence the "smog" you supposedly get in the general area around Middlesborough So having beat arsenal in the first leg, anyone fancy boro to beat them at home, go to Cardiff and win the League Cup this season? Boro have never actually won ANYTHING since their formation. The last time they reached a cup final, in the late 90s (in fact they reached both the league and FA cup finals in the same season), they lost (both of them) and sealed the season in dramatic fashion by getting relegated from the Premiership too ;D. Anyone fancy them this season?

Did they not get to the League Cup final the year after, when they went back up?

Did they not get to the League Cup final the year after, when they went back up? Hmmm... maybe they did. Now I'm Probably getting my facts mixed up... so it was the FA Cup when they went down and League cup when they came back up? I need to check it out...

I was RIGHT!
From the UEFA.com Middlesbrough profile!
Final defeats Since then, Middlesbrough have returned to the top flight and, barring a few aberrations, become established in the FA Premiership in their new stadium. Their most frustrating season was without doubt 1996/97 when they reached both the FA Cup final and League Cup final only to lose on both their visits to Wembley - respectively 2-0 against Chelsea FC and 1-0 against Leicester City FC. And if that was not bad enough they also suffered relegation from the Premiership.
Wembley heartache The next season was rather more satisfying as they bounced straight back up to regain their position in the Premiership, although they were once more denied their first major trophy when they again reached the League Cup final, only to lose to Chelsea FC 2-0 in the final.

You have a good memory David! So i got the bit about the two cups and the relegation right and how on earth you remembered the bit about the cup final the following year... ;D
That season when Boro were relegated, 1996/97 they went down along with Sunderland ;D, whilst Newcaatle finished 2nd in the Premiership. The following season Boro went back up (and lost in the league cup final) while Newcastle lost in the FA Cup Final, which we also did the following season (in 1998 Newcastle lost to arsenal, in 1999 to Man Utd). Sunderland went back up in 1998, Newcastle were nearly relegated. Newcastle then lost a FA Cup semi-final match in 2000 against Chelsea, also played at wembley. in between this, I think Boro may have gone down then back up again and Sunderland went down in grand style last year.
It's been a strange topsy-turvy time for north-east clubs these last few years...

I'm fairly sure Boro haven't gone down since coming back up that season, although I could be wrong...

You've DEFINATELY got a good memory! Their record since promotion (98/99 on left to current position) 9/12/14/12/11//13 (current position) all from www.middlesbrough-mad.co.uk/footydb/loadlghs.asp which has archives back to 1899! Newcastle have an even better archive site which goes back to the 1880s including attendances for EVERY match!
