Sorry if this has been asked before, but where does everybody think England will get to in the World Cup?
In the past: 1930 - DNQ 1934 - DNQ 1938 - DNQ 1950 - out in group stage (bl**dy Yanks) 1954 - out in QFs to Uruguay 1958 - lost group play-off to USSR 1962 - out in QFs to Brazil (who won tournament) 1966 - won 1970 - out in QFs to West Germany (after they poisoned some of our players) 1974 - DNQ 1978 - DNQ 1982 - out in 2nd group stage 1986 - out in QFs to Argentina (who won tournament) (bl**dy Maradona) 1990 - out in SFs to West Germany (who won tournament) 1994 - DNQ 1998 - out in 2nd round to Argentina (bl**dy Simeone) 2002 - out in QFs to Brazil (who won tournament)

No further than QF.
I hope I'm wrong but Germany, Holland, Brazil, Argentina - are these the teams we can meet from the knock out round last 16 & QF?
We had a better chance in 2002 - at least this time the temperature and climate will be better.

quarter finals.
too many important players (esp. forward players) will either be barely fit or totally lacking match practice...

Quarter-final exit to Holland... actually we might get past them if we take them to penalties, because they're even worse than us.
Still, only 29 days before world cup starts now #cheer#

That's brazil, this is england. so we have to be positive about sh*tty boro when its obvious they will loose but be negative towards england and english players! It dosenrt matter where your born if you have tallent you have tallent...

Come on who said 1st, own up Eternal optimist. I honestly thought boro had a chance. I also think that if england had all their players fully fit and their minds sorted, we could win it, but I fully expect us to flop spectacularly. I cant believe you are trying to compare pele to walcott, I hope he is the next starlet, but he didn't go straight into the arsenal team at any point did he?

i voted 3rd, but i cant really say w/o knowing who we're paired up with. i think argentina would be a real problem because we won the last competitive game aginst them so they'll be itching for revenge. i think any team with ronaldinho on form in will concede eventually even with a top draw defensive display so we would have to be able to outscore them - not convinced we could do this. germany on their turf would be another difficult test too the more i think about it the more i struggle to see us getting past the Q/Fs. bugger i was too rash ;D

So the 2nd round shouldn't cause many problems... then in the Quarters, we'll face someone from groups C (Holland, Argentina, Ivory Cost, Serbia) or D (Portugal, Mexico, Angola, Iran)... I predict Argentina to win group C, with Holland 2nd, and Portugal to win group D... that'd mean we play Portugal or Holland in the QFs. Possible opponents in the semis include Brazil, Spain and Czech Republic - if we all win our groups, Italy, France, Argentina and Germany will be in the other half of the draw.

Eriksson's got his strategy sorted "You can't mess around with winning games in a World Cup," said Eriksson. "We will try to win every game and see where that takes us."

and what will be the tactics if we are playing a "big team" and go 1-0 ahead?
Defend backs to the wall?

Without Rooney, and with reservations about Owen, I'm not sure we're guaranteed to top the group. Which is why I went for the slightly more pesimistic option of being knocked out in the 2nd rd
