I don't think it is automatic, the FA had to meet to decide whether tha Battle of Bramall Lane should be replayed or the points awarded to us, since we were so obviously going to win it. Unless it's now automatic following that game?

just been reading up the rules and any game that gets abandoned either gets replayed or the innocent party gets awarded an automatic 3-0 win.
"The FAM Competitions Committee has awarded Negeri Sembilan a 3-0 win in their FA Cup second-leg semifinal against Sabah, which was abandoned after fans invaded the pitch in Kota Kinabalu last Saturday"
"Dynamo Kiev were awarded a 3-0 win over AS Roma after their Champions League tie was halted when the referee was hit by an object thrown from the crowd"
just depends on the incident i spose, if anyones played a footie games the rules are if you go down to 6 men its an automatic 3-0 win. which I'm guessing is the same in real football as every other rule is accurate. the FA just like to milk it.

took me 30 minutes looking through yahoo for the rule, however i could not find it either way. the fa have a huge list of rules on pdf at www.thefa.com/TheFA/RulesAndRegulations/ could not find the section on abandoned games though. when i searched for "awarded 3-0 win" it came up with a number of examples of abandoned games that have been awarded an automatic 3-0 win, that is the standard. as the sheff utd - wba game that was abandoned. if its abandoned due to weather its a replay, if its abandoned due to fans, gross misconduct of players etc the offending team loose the game. feel free to try and look it up. thats the only conclusion i can come up with

but as it was 3-0 anyway they let the result stan, makes no difference really, either way its a 3-0 win. the fa would of had to have a meeting and investigate it anyway

Blimey, that is shocking, I thought I saw our old manager in there Keith Curle, he used to play for england you know! Some of those tackles and suchlike were utterly shocking, were they deducted any more points for failing to control their players?

United were fined £10,000. Nothing really, should have been a lot more.

Talking of abandonments, many years ago there was apparently a match (I believe an FA Cup match) when a team went 6-0 up (all six goals scored by the same player), then the match was abandoned for some reason. However, due to the rule at the time, the match was replayed completely from scratch (i.e. voiding all 6 goals), and the team who dominated the initial match lost the replay 1-0 (and were thus out of the competition).
Imagine the furore if something like that was to happen nowadays!
(The match did, however, give the double-hat-trick-scorer the rare distinction of scoring 6 goals in one match and still being on the losing side!)
Edit: just found out that the bracketed comment is untrue - according to Wikipedia "In 1922, England amateur international Wilfred Minter scored 7 goals for St Albans City against Dulwich Hamlet. Dulwich won 8-7"

In fact, today's Daily Mail actually mentions the match in question: it was Man City vs Luton in 1961 (4th round) - Denis Law scored 6 goals initially before the match was abandoned (with the score at 6-2), and then scored in the replay (when City lost 3-1).
