right. i've just finished my first listen of 'weekend in the city' and i declare myself a huge fan. i don't want to go overboard, but i'm even willing to say that as an album i prefer it over 'silent alarm'. i still feel that the better songs are on it's predecessor as nothing really stands out and makes you go "wow! what was that?!" like 'helicopter' or 'banquet' did. it's just that 'WITC' is a more accomplished effort and is more interesting to listen to in full.
bloc party remain a band that like to try things a little differently and not follow the convetions used by most other bands, especially for bands with a higher profile. another thing is kele's singing and lyrics somehow make it all feel like he's singing about something very deep, sometimes a lot deeper than it really is. there's songs featuring the usual bloc party themes - the troubles of modern society/having a purpose in life and it's meaning/trying to find true love - but amongst these familiar topics are songs about lesser visited subjects, such as daytrips to brighton ['waiting for the 7.18'], trying to get back home from a funeral ['where is home?'] and even a day off school cos of a teacher training day ['i still remember'].
musically it is quite clear that they're fans of radiohead and take influence from all eras of their back catalogue. don't worry if you're not a fan of when thom yorke put his guitar away and bought a synth cos even tho they have their kid a/amnesiac moments, they only hint at an electronic sound and never venture into full blown electronica.
throughout the album the band show that they are very good musically and creatively, both in their playing and the way that the songs are arranged. tho i would imagine some credit must go to the producer for this too.
i dunno what my fave track is yet, but a few that i remember shone for me are 'song for clay (disappear here)', 'hunting for witches', 'waiting for the 7.18', 'on', 'uniform' and 'SXRT' is a good album closer that ends up having a somewhat 'hope of the states' feel to it.
in conlcusion, this is a great album. very interesting to listen to and not just the usual stuff you hear. dark and brooding in places, but with a feeling of optimism in others.

love silent alarm... 7/10 off hand. Some very good, new music. This album has very little that i find inspiring is all.
It takes more for a good band I like to just go into the studio and 'bang some songs out'. This seems too much bloc party by numbers to me...

you're a hard man to please then. yea i will admit that it does have that 'silent alarm' sound, but to be fair it is the same band! it doesn't sound exactly like 'silent alarm', it does have enough of a change, to my ear, to hear the slight variations between the two albums. but i suppose if you're one of those people that expect every act to continually push their sound and be constantly evolving, i can see why you would be dissapointed. but still, to say that it's boring is being too critical. if it sounds just like 'silent alarm' and you loved that, surely that can't be too much of a bad thing for you?

it sounds like the weaker moments of silent alarm is the problem. If they put out another silent alarm, with some great, some good and some good tracks - all more less the same formula I'd actually be ok with that. Many bands I like don't really 'change their sound' at all and I'm ok with that...

The new single is their weakest yet imo. I'm not overly fussed on hearing the album...

This seems too much bloc party by numbers to me... Is this all that much of an issue for the band that calls itself Bloc Party?

There are enough legal mp3s for people to be allowed to google them, and it's not clever enough to work out whether or not you're searching for something illegal.

Can I just say that the Prayer is fabby! Video is well kooky as well, adds to it, loads of funky dancing, and a great song, I hope it is HUGE in 2007!

Have to say I like the freaky video as well, suits the song, love the bit where the lead singer's head bobs along in time with the beat, superb.
