The Long Blondes have announced that they have split up. Guitarist Dorian Cox posted a blog at MySpace.com/thelongblondes announcing the break-up of the Sheffield band this morning (October 20). He wrote that the reason for the split was because he was unsure about when he would be well enough to play guitar. The Long Blondes man suffered a stroke in June, resulting in a series of gig cancellations. Cox thanked fans for their support and goodwill. "We have decided to call it a day," he wrote. "The main reason for this is that I suffered from a stroke in June and unfortunately I do not know when/if I will be well enough to play guitar again. "On behalf of the band I'd like to say a big thank you to anyone who ever came to one of our shows, bought one of our records or danced to one of our songs in a club. "Thank you, if it wasn't for you the whole thing would have been pointless. "Finally on a personal note, thanks for all your well-wishing messages." The Long Blondes released two studio albums: 2006's 'Someone To Drive You Home' and this year's 'Couples'. They released a collection of their early singles, entitled 'Singles', today. They won the Philip Hall Radar Award at the Shockwaves NME Awards in 2006 after forming in 2005. All at NME would like to wish Dorian and the rest of the band members all the best for the future. Very sad, here's all the best to Dorian. From a selfish perspective I am so glad to have seen them live.
"Couples" is one of the albums of the year thus far, if not THE album, boldly experimental, and it is a sad commentary on the rancid state of the music industry in Britain that it was buried by the media and not given the airplay it deserved.

Here in Sheffield, we used to call them a Rotherham band. Odd that.

Oh poo. I liked the Long Blondes. I did wonder why a singles package was coming out.

Sad that they split up for health reasons.
But I didn't like their 'Couples' stuff very much, not a patch on their first album's singles.

It's a shame, but I saw it coming after all of the live cancellations and poor reception to "Couples" .

Interesting to find this news out via their own CD artwork: my copy of "Singles" arrived in the post yesterday morning. Upon removing the disc from the box there was a message where the disc had been announcing the split! This was a couple of hours before the Digital Spy article went up. I was shocked, but it's understandable as Dorian is still so ill.
They left behind some great material, but - agreed - "Couples" didn't really work unfortunately.

The Long Blondes singer Kate Jackson is going solo after the band's split.
The band ended as Dorian Cox doesn't know if he'll be able to play guitar again after he had a stroke in June.
Jackson told 6 Music: "It'll reflect my taste a bit more than Blondes, which was a collaborative thing." Of Cox's injury, she said: "He's still the same Dorian. It's just his arm now that they're working on."

as far as i know boy kill boy have split up aswel recently, can anyone confirm that? Yep, last week IN SHORT WE'VE SPLIT UP.
Basically like many other bands we kinda got sucked into some sort of decision made by 'the powers that be' that guitar bands are 'over'. The label got shakey and decided to start chasing whatever they're told is gonna be the next big thing and as a result, we got dropped, just a month after the record was released.
We obviously were completely f***ing broken about it. At the time being we all know the industry is in a bit of a state, to say the least, so really everything is being run by a few people. Until 'the professional music industry business people' work out how to sell their artists, really all you can do is just gig your ass off and reach as many people as possible, and that's just what we did. But even still bit by bit, we could feel ourselves being buried alive. No matter how hard we tried to pull ourselves out, there was just another familiar face ready to throw another pile on.

I like the use of inverted commas. Still, backs up what I've been saying for ages.

Has anyone found "Singles"? I went to buy it in HMV earlier but all they had was their debut? And this is in their home town ffs!

I too am of the opinion that the second album wasn't as good as the first, but saying that, I thought 'Century' was one of their best songs.

The second album is actually much much better than the first... Give it a couple of listens and you'll see that they had developed their sound. The new direction offered a wider spectrum of sounds and the results were astonishing... If the debut was The Bends then Couples is OK Computer... I was really looking forward to whatever they would do next... Couples really got me excited about them... It's really a SHAME on the music industry that gave a bad reception to this album... It's one of the best of this year!

Should have been nominated for the Mercury. But, no, the industry had to promote its stage school brats and artists it wanted to break America...
