For those who care, the rugby league world cup started today in Australia (it is the first one since 2000). In order to avoid too many one-sided matches, the format involves a group of 4 teams (of which 3 qualify for the semi-finals), and 2 groups of 3 teams (the top teams of each group have a play-off for the last semi-final place). Groups as follows:
Group A
England Australia New Zealand Papua New Guinea
Group B
Fiji France Scotland
Group C
Ireland Samoa Tonga
First match has been played:
England 32-22 Papua New Guinea

I listened to the England game. A bit close for comfort but at least they got the win and are pretty much through to the semi-finals. I think that might be the best they can hope for...

Group A:
Australia 30-6 New Zealand
Group B:
Scotland 18-36 France
Interestingly, the final will be played on Saturday 22 November - exactly 5 years to the day that the 2003 Rugby Union World Cup final was played (also in Australia)!

All to play for in Ireland v Samoa, then! Looks like Ireland need to win by 5 or more points... I guess number of tries is a factor?

Group A: New Zealand 48-6 Papua New Guinea Group B: France 6-42 Fiji So France are out, and Scotland need to beat Fiji by at least 28 points to go through (a 27-point win will leave Fiji & Scotland level on points difference).

Group B:
Fiji 16-18 Scotland
Group C:
Ireland 34-16 Samoa
Fiji and Ireland will thus play each other to determine who will join the top 3 teams from Group A in the semi-finals. Scotland and Tonga play each other on Saturday to determine 7th place, and France and Samoa will play-off for 9th place on Sunday.

What a total waste of time this tournament is. No wonder they cancelled the last one.

France finished last Will there be a 5th/6th playoff between Papua New Guinea and Fiji/Ireland too? I don't know. Maybe Papua New Guinea are automatically awarded 6th place. I don't think the classification games mean much anyway. Their purpose is to ensure all 10 teams get 3 games.

First semi-final: New Zealand 32-22 England So MrH's prediction would appear to be accurate...

So how many points will Australia win the final by? New Zealand will do well to finish within 20.
