Um. I've been posting here for quite a while, so I suppose I should introduce myself. Hi. My name is Jim, and I have an abiding, occasionally obsessive interest in popular music. I'm particularly interested in the contrasts of music popular in England as opposed to America, where I reside. I have to admit to coming down on the side of the UK. I do a weekly radio show called "England Swings" on a local cablecast, webcast station. It can be found on Sunday evenings at 6:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (that's about 11:00 p.m. in the UK) at www.fcac.org/webr. The purpose of the show is to share some of the amazing British music that's been done in the past, as well as right now, with an audience that otherwise would have no awareness of it. There are literally scores of great bands, songs, and albums that never make it across the Atlantic - and we poor Americans end up being oblivious to wonderful stuff that we'd probably like if we gave it a try. The whole thing comes from my own love of music : a wise man once said "If there's something you like, share it with as many people as you possibly can. Ultimately, there will be more of it for all of you". That's what I do. If you'd like a look at the playlists week by week, check out my MySpace page, where I post them each week. That's at www.myspace.com/ukswings. A while ago, I started writing reviews of music, and I've been posting them on MySpace as well as here for several months now. I try to do one weekly, and they run the gamut from British rock and pop through world music and even American performers (there ARE a few good ones out there). I've been posting them here since October, and you can find over 40 reviews in Haven's review section. There, that's me. Nice to meet you!

Hi Jim, thanks for posting! That sounds like a great idea for a show. Whereabouts in America are you from?

Paddy, thanks so much for the kind words!
MH, I'm just outside Washington, DC, in the Northern Virginia area. We boast some of the worst traffic in the world!

Oh, jeez, I had it for lunch today - and I didn't even notice! I think it was strawberry, or maybe raspberry . . . it was the most nondescript yogurt in the universe, I'll tell you that. I don't even know WHY I ate it.
Thanks so much for all the kind words from everyone. The England Swings Cowboy Ranch is now open for any and all questions!

What's the best thing ,and worst thing about Fairfax,VA,USA ?

The best thing : diversity. Makes for good restaurants and festivals!
The second best thing : everything is here. From the hills of Tyson's Corner, to the valleys of Alexandria, we've got all the stores, all the food, all, all, all.
Except a good record store, of course. They all died.
The worst thing : traffic.
The second worst thing : local radio. It's all talk show screamers and "formatted" stations, and none of them have the least bit of originality when it comes to playlists.
Of course, that's across most of America, but we haven't even got a decent college station.

Is there a MrsUkSwings, and if so - when you come home after a show,do you test her to make sure she had tuned in,and listened to the entire broadcast ? If she fails to tell you the exact order of jingles at the halfway point,or the fourth song you played, does she have to sleep on the couch ?

Yes, there is - but after the initial programs a couple of years ago, she doesn't listen anymore. And she snorts derisively when I mention it.
I just don't think she sees the potential . . . (sigh)
She does always participate in the Mother's Day show, though.

How DARE she ! You should trade her in for a man. That'll teach her.And confuse her, slightly. That's what I'd do.
Mothers day ? So she's a mother ? This makes you a father ? You kept that quiet. How many kids have you got (so far) ?

I think I'll keep her; she adds just the right amount of spice to life. She does have an appreciation of music; she's just picky in her tastes.
We have two children, but they're both grown - 31 and 29 respectively. And one granddaughter.
That makes me very, very old.

When was the last time you were on some swings, and did you ever have any in your back yard ?

I love swings, but that's indicative of my risk-taking behavior.
I've been on a swing in the last year or so, I'm sure, but just the average swinging back and forth doesn't do it for me. Instead, I do this ridiculous feet-over-head move where the world turns upside down. There's this delicious swarm of butterflies that happen in your stomach when you go upright again, like cresting the big hill on the roller coaster.
I've had swings in the yard on several occasions. There was one between two trees when I was very small, and somehow my friend climbed onto the suspending bar and up into the tree one day. She fell. knocking herself unconscious.
I thought she was dead.
I remember a swingset being purchased, and - while they always look like more fun than they are at the store - I rarely used it. Unless you put the ends in concrete, the damn things would always tip over.
Swings, slides, and other accoutrements seemed to be always behind our house in a public area when the kids were growing up.
