As an historical comparison, the worst-ever average league position is (depending on how you rank Divisions 3 North and South) 85-86, held by Thames AFC of Newham. Two seasons, 20th out of 22 and then stone last. Once attracted a crowd of 469 in a stadium that could hold 120,000...

For the years when we had Div 3 North & South, I ranked those teams as if they were in one big division together (using points per game if the number of teams in each division was different).
Using that method, Thames' positions were 82 and 86, giving an average of 84, which is the worst in Football League history, but only just.
Averages for ex-Football League clubs: (most of those near the top spent their time in the league when there were only two divisions)
Accrington 9.800 Darwen 23.625 Bootle 24.000 New Brighton Tower 24.333 Burton Wanderers 24.667 Middlesbrough Ironopolis 27.000 Northwich Victoria 27.000 Rotherham Town 29.667 Wimbledon 30.111 Burton United 30.800 Glossop 31.176 Leeds City 31.200 Gainsborough Trinity 31.500 Loughborough 32.000 Luton Town 40.871 Oxford United 50.250 Bradford Park Avenue 51.000 Gateshead 56.735 Cambridge United 64.486 Nelson 65.900 Stalybridge Celtic 66.000 Wrexham 66.088 Mansfield Town 69.429 Wigan Borough 71.500 York City 71.691 Newport County 73.183 Chester City 73.463 Ashington 73.500 Aberdare Athletic 73.833 Southport 73.980 Merthyr Town 74.900 New Brighton 75.048 Halifax Town 75.551 Durham City 76.286 Barrow 76.568 Workington 77.769 Rushden & Diamonds 78.200 Maidstone United 82.667 Scarborough 82.750 Boston United 83.200 Kidderminster Harriers 83.200 Thames 84.000

As I'm too lazy to work out the Scottish placings, I thought anyone who doesn't know might be interested in the placings for Edinburgh City...
1932: 40th (bottom) 1933: 38th (bottom) 1934: 38th (bottom) 1935: 38th (bottom) 1936: 35th 1937: 38th (bottom) 1938: 37th 1939: 38th (bottom) 1947: 40th (bottom) 1948: 43rd (the only team they beat was Raith Rovers Reserves) 1949: 44th (bottom)
For 1950 Division C, which was increasingly made up of reserve sides, was split into two regions, and with that restructuring Edinburgh's answer to Queen's Park vanished...

You, sir, are a star.
For anyone wondering why Edinburgh City aren't bottom, in 1923 the football boom in Scotland was such that the Scottish League expanded to three divisions and a 56 club league. Feeding a population of three million. Every team below City played in that third division and only Lochgelly (nicknamed the Happylanders) and Nithsdale Wanderers clambered outside it. Within three years an economic downturn practically killed it off - Dumbarton Harp were the first to resign mid-season, Galston followed in 1925 after a dozen games and the last season was never properly completed.
Which led to a problem. At the end of that season, Helensburgh were top with 38 points from 30, Leith Athletic second with 37 from 29 and Forfar third on 35 from 28. The League for some reason voted Forfar into the Second as quasi-champions (ahead of Leith on a casting vote) as Broxburn were relegated into oblivion.

Thanks, Mr. Vastariner.
I've got Welsh League as well but I haven't updated that for a couple of years.
Non-league will be next up.

One other quick point on Scottish ex-league teams - statistically Thistle, an obscure Glaswegian outfit, have the worst possible record of any team in any league; one season, 1893-4, bottom of the League, out. Apparently not a single photo of the team survives.

Non-league:
These figures are based on positions in the non-league pyramid since the formation of the Conference in 1979. Positions are awarded for teams playing in the Conference (including North and South divisions) and the Premier divisions of the Northern Premier, Southern and Isthmian leagues. Teams must complete the season to be awarded a position, so Chester, Farsley and King's Lynn do not appear on this season's list.

Poor Durham City...they were basically a sixth form team this season...finished the season on zero points...despite winning a couple of matches...

1. Liverpool 8.358 2. Arsenal 8.981 The gap closed by 0.044 (and our average dipped below 9), so perhaps in about 20 years we might take top spot

Misterh, I've since found out that Rushden were docked 5 points, but appealed, the appeal time is now over, so the final league table should show them with 5 less points, and therefore Mansfield move 13-12 and Kettering 14-13, while Rushden slip 12-14, only minor amendments needed, but best it is all correct.
12 Rushden & D'mnds 46 10 6 7 37 27 6 8 9 28 35 3 62 13 Mansfield 46 9 6 8 40 37 8 4 11 33 38 -2 61 14 Kettering 46 8 8 7 33 32 7 5 11 31 43 -11 58 15 Gateshead 46 8 9 6 28 28 6 6 11 37 40 -3 57
Football Conference confirm Mansfield Town finished 12th in the Final League Table, not 13th as widely reported on websites.

Yes it should.

Hi, Just a query about the final Blue Square Premier table. Rushden were due to have 5 points deducted, pending a 14 day appeal period, which has now passed. Thus should the final table on your official website be amended to reflect this? Thanks, Martin Shaw

Thanks Andy. That takes Mansfield's average down to 11, putting them level with Grimsby.
Will do English and Scottish Leagues later in the week. Been revising for a law exam all this week.

It was an NCTJ Court Reporting exam, which I do alongside my journalism degree. I think it went OK...

It's worth noting each of the top 11 on this list finished in the top 12 of the Premier League this season.
(AFC) Wimbledon would be at #30 on this list.
If MK Dons' record included Wimbledon's as well, they would be at #35.
