I found it odd that they had Heavy Metal Boyz on last week, and it was never a hit, I thought they only picked songs that were in the Top 40? There have been quite a few non top 40 acts. A week or so ago they had City Boy on. They didn't have a hit until 1978 (5-7-0-5). It just goes to show that this rule about only having songs in the charts was a myth. Or, if you prefer it in tabloid headline style "HITS RULE IS A MYTH" Yes and of course the first one they repeated had Tarney-Spencer Band and Laurie Andrew [without Zero]. Neither of them ever had a chart hit in that form. I think in those days they recorded on Wednesday for a Thursday broadcast and of course the chart was only announced on the Tuesday so they'd have to finalise bookings at short notice. The rule about not including anything that was dropping down the chart seemed to take precedence over this risk of including something that would never make it at all.

Having just watched the latest edition from last night, I think I'm becoming slightly obsessed with Cherry Gillespie. Gorgeous!! She's even made me kinda like Mud "Shake It Down".

Thankfully that was never a hit. A thoroughly atrocious cover of Got To Get You Into My Life.

The Surprise Sisters!!? Good grief lol. I know, awful and unsurprisingly wasn't a hit. Their previous single, La Booga Rooga, actually reached No.38 in March '76 though!

I think the surprise was that they were there at all.

Perhaps their parents' birth control failed.

Another classic last night, lol. Murray Head, Brotherhood of Man, a truly shocking Ruby Flipper interpretation of Young Hearts Run Free. Happy days

Was that the last TOTP performance by T Rex, they looked very different from their early glam days, and I dont think they had another Top 40 hit before his death the following year...

My TV guide showed the first performer last night as Mark Bowland, I thought ...never heard of him, then Marc Bolan and T Rex appear.

Marc Bolan's last TOTP appearance was in 1977 promoting the UK#42 smash hit, the new wave sounding "Soul Of My Suit", when he'd gone on a fitness regime and had slimmed down to look like (bizarrely) Katie Melua's dad!. www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNnaBM6uKmw
