Jonathan King had a letter from the BBC Director Channel following complaints about his song being cut from TOTP BBC4 repeat. Source: www.kingofhits.co.uk/index.php?option=com_kunena&Itemid=65&func=view&catid=5&id=75562 Dear Jonathan Thank you for your email. Please accept my apologies for the delay in replying.
I am sorry to hear that you were unhappy that your performance was edited out of an episode of Top of the Pops recently repeated on BBC Four. The BBC's complaints process begins with a response from the relevant programme makers and I therefore asked my colleagues in BBC Four to address this matter. Their response is as follows: "We are sorry that Mr King's appearance was edited out of this particular programme. We accept that this should not have happened and we would like to apologise for any upset this caused.
We can assure Mr King that there is no policy in place requiring any of his appearances, or those of any one else, to be removed from repeats we show on the channel. We can also assure Mr King that his performance will not be edited out of any future repeat of this particular episode of Top of the Pops."
I hope this response is helpful, but please come back to me if there are any further points you wish to raise and I will ensure that these are dealt with in accordance with our complaints process. I want to join BBC Four in apologising for this incorrect decision. Best wishes Mark Thompson Director General BBC

As I pointed out elsewhere, the BBC has no compunction in showing stars who supported the genocidal regimes of Libya, Chechnya, Uzbekistan and, stretching a point, apartheid South Africa, let alone the odd murderer or wifebeater...

Simon May this week in the days before he became more famous for writing the Eastenders theme. He also did a version of the Crossroads theme and I've a feeling Summer Of My Life was used in the programme.

I think Liddle may have hit the nail on the head. The judge was sentencing him for Una Paloma Blanca rather then for the sex offences. The BBC response is still a little odd. They could simply have said that they needed to cut a 40 minute show down to 30 minutes and his was one of the songs to be cut out.

The full 40 minute version was normally shown late at night, but this show was cut to 35 minutes or so by editing out his performance.

They could simply have said that they needed to cut a 40 minute show down to 30 minutes and his was one of the songs to be cut out. Whilst his music was generally of the novelty tat variety, most of his TV shows were not very good; I heavily disliked what he did when running the BRIT award shows; and thought he was an annoying egotist; then to demonize him to the point he is written out of British popular culture like the repulsive Gary Glitter & the Black & White Minstrels, and numerous racist/sexist programmes from the late 1960s-late 1970s whilst still lauding the works of Ronan Polanski; Oscar Wilde; or continue to play oldies by Chuck Berry; Jerry Lee Lewis; the Rolling Stones up to the point Bill Wyman left the band; Michael Jackson; the record productions of Phil Spector; Joe Meek; Steve Jolley etc is all rather hypocritical.

I agree that attempting to wipe King from history is wrong (however tempting it might be for musical reasons). Some of the people whose work is still played (Spector, Berry etc) seem to have been let off because the quality of their work overrides any qualms about other misdemeanours.
Oscar Wilde is different again. His "crime" is now legal so he wouldn't have been convicted. Of course, he is also responsible for many of the wittiest lines ever written in the English language.

Disappointing that Jimmy Saville didn't get to introduce Showaddywaddy in tonight's programme.

Dr Hook with the worst lyric ever? "water my plants while I patch my pants!" From the Kursaal Flyers song which also featured I knew that she'd seen me / 'cause she dropped her bikini When she finished her laundry / she was all in a quandary Her escape was so urgent / she forgot her detergent

Jesus H Jones, that was DIRE. Anyone who wonders exactly why punk broke through only had to sit through that to see why. It could almost have been a 2011 chart, it was positively painful. And whose stupid moronic idiot flatulent idea was it to have Clodagh bloody Rodgers on the show? Of all the acts that were not in the charts who might have needed a bit of a push, the cutting-edge riding-the-crest-of-a-populist-wave taste-making genre-busting show invited someone who was out of fashion 5 years before?
I never thought I'd say this, but thank God for Jethro Tull.

I actually bought the Clodagh Rodgers single, Save Me.. Wasn't a hit though but I liked it then. Hasn't aged too well though. Oh and why was the penultimate TOTP first regular show performance, Daddy Cool, also the first song on this compilation!!
