I'd imagine when we get into the 90s, we will see R. Kelly tracks 'yewtreed' Celine Dion has pulled her duet with him from streaming sites due to the sex allegations surrounding him It does my head in.... Music is music and should be left alone for people to enjoy. If all of the music was taken down by people who had been accused of having relations with underage people then many of the biggest acts of all time would be gone. Exactly like to see The Who or The Rolling Stones being blacklisted as if!!

Great to see Westworld, although Silver Mac was my fave by them.

22/1. USA and QPR, er, Wright and Davies. We start with Dead Or Alive with a song that starts EXACTLY THE SAME as "You Spin Me Round" and the chorus sounds EXACTLY THE SAME AS ITS VERSES. I think Pete is trying to emulate Wayne Hussey. He has a flying V but no intent of playing it. This is dire. It is also at no. 12 and I have no memory of this whatsoever.
A place below and Astro gets a go on vox for UB40 with a part-USSR video. That must have been a shock to the Soviets. Even people who don't like UB40 like this one. It's had far more impact on the mainstream than many of their much bigger hits.
Randy "I'm not desperate for a hit but I've flown from Frisco to do this show" Crawford with something boring. Great voice, but material is seriously lacking.
The 40. Eric Clapton? Paul Simon? Hot Chocolate? Kool & The Gang? Have we gone back in time? Who the flip is Vesta? Freeez? Christ alive, this IS a timeslip. They don't have a picture of Raze. Siouxsie gets a big rise, good to see.
Band making their debut. Curiosity Killed The Cat. They're going to be megastars, apparently. Meh, this is basically boyband yuppie. We get two breakers. Taffy and Pepsi & Shirlie. The Taffy one is quite good, it has a Motowny vibe, cheap video at Santa Pod, decent chorus. The Pepsi & Shirlie one is utter gash. And I still don't know which one is which.
And we get Siouxsie!!! YAY!!! Lovely dark cover of the Julie Driscoll hit. Great acceleration in the chorus. Very Toyah. Things looking up.
Iggy Pop is in the top 10. We live in strange times. Alison Moyet stuck at 3, sadly. New no. 1. Someone getting married. Steve Silk Hurley. Ah, yes. A record blatantly fiddled to the top of the charts. Not particularly objecting - but, maybe, had it been chart DQ'd, it would have been Moyet's to lose...mind you, it is not very good at all. It's like what happens if you take a song, but remove the tune and the lyrics.
Playout is the Swing Out Sister video. Sophisticated.

So was that the lead singer from All About Eve in the background on the Mission - Severina? Or am I making that up?

Two and a half. I really can't get this theme tune at all. Effing crap. Peel and Long with a reference to bad language. Was Geldof on Wogan perhaps? Blow Monkeys, Doctor Robert in a very Russian constructivist knit. As if Stalin played golf. He can't be bothered to be convincing mimewise. This is yuppie. Cut above the normal yuppie crap, but it's still not really adding to the great store of human achievement.
Randy Crawford. More yuppie.
The Smiths at 12. With "Shoplifters Of The World". No unite on the chyron. This is much more gothic than their usual jangly material.
Charts. A lot of totally forgotten songs by well-known acts. Berlin, Damned &c. Ward Brothers? Who? "Male Stripper"? That's not gonna get played. They've got a pic for Raze now.
Curiosity up to 5. Long tipping them for no. 1. Hm. Insider info? Not the top 10 yet, breakers first, including 5 Star and Clapton. Neither are any good. Then Brightman & Crawford. She has a weird face in the video. Long damns with faint praise. Does she sing in this at all? It seems though that it isn't a breaker as he's still going quite a while into it. No, she doesn't sing AT ALL. Feck this.
Top 10. New no. 1. Wham are at nos 1 and 2. Hogging it. Who would have thought Aretha would outlive George? Peel does a famous putdown and starts grooving to a remix of "You Sexy Thing". Because obvs EVERYTHING needs an extra drumbeat. Christ alive. There's silent movie footage featuring Bruce Forsyth. Possibly. It was a great original. Why eff it up with a remix?

Twelve two and twelve hundredth Ver Pops. Mayo and Powell. Mowell. In the intro they say we're going to have some Pepsi & Shirlie. Are they no. 1? We start with Level 42 with perhaps their most accessibly commercial song to date. Quite clever but Mike's falsetto gets on my mammaries.
Ben E King riding the retrophilia wave and is in at 19. No objections to this one though. It is quite, quite, quite the record. Is that River Phoenix? That arm thing is creepy.
Ah, P&S. They've obvs still at 2. I bet they could kill George, he could have picked any week to release his duet. It's poor planning unless the labels were going for a 1 and 2. I still can't remember which is which. Song sounds like a Madonna cast-off. Maggie Thatcher was right; where's the heartache?
Chart my bitch up. Mental As Anything, heh. It's all very dull. Other than Timbuk3, one better than Timbuk2. Chart stops at 11 for the corporate creation that is Five Star. Next.
Breakers. Timbuk3, heh, this is terrific. Great lo-fi video. Ends too soon. Carly Simon. Throwback Thursday? Toaster? Hm. And the Europe thin joke is obviously over, this particular slice of cock rock has all the appeal of botulism.
Vesta Williams. This is aural wallpaper. Who actually bought this? Who was moved enough to think "yes, this is a great record, it has a terrific chorus, I must go out and buy it"? The same people who buy ready salted crisps? What's the f***ing point? Just play air on the turntable, it has the same effect.
Top 10. Should I bother? We know what the no. 1 is. Let's just go to the playout. George Michael is apparently the only person in the world to have no. 1s with four different acts. Really? Paul McCartney, Paul & Steve, Wings, Beatles, Beatles & Preston? Playout is Taffy, which is actually fun. Why was this not in the main programme instead of Vesta?

With the Michael Jackson thing on the go, it will be interesting to see what the Beeb will do about his upcoming performances in 1987.
Luckily for them the first song "Bad" will not be shown on the episode of 24 Sept because Mike Smith was on
24/09/87 (Gary Davies & Mike Smith)
Johnny Hates Jazz – “I Don’t Want To Be A Hero” ABC – “The Night You Murdered Love” Madonna – “Causing A Commotion” Jan Hammer – “Crockett’s Theme” Gary Numan – “Cars (E Reg Model)” LL Cool J – “I Need Love” Michael Jackson – “Bad” Mick Jagger – “Let’s Work” Rick Astley – “Never Gonna Give You Up”
We will also miss the next weeks episode as Mike Smith did that one as well. so we will have to wait until the 3rd December episode to see if they show it?
03/12/87 (Gary Davies & Janice Long)
The Hooters – “Satellite” Alexander O’Neal – “Criticize” The Proclaimers – “Letter From America” Def Leppard – “Hysteria” Cutting Crew – “I’ve Been In Love Before” Jellybean featuring Elisa Fiorillo – “Who Found Who” Michael Jackson – “The Way You Make Me Feel” Paul McCartney – “Once Upon A Long Ago” T’Pau – “China In Your Hand” Maxi Priest – “Some Guys Have All The Luck”

They can show individual performances from his shows eg TOTP2, but they cannot show him introducing the acts, so renders the show not able to be shown in its complete form. I agree its crazy

I agree its crazy I don’t thing there are any legal barriers to showing Mike Smith’s episodes, the BBC owns the footage and is free to broadcast it. It is, however, BBC policy to gain agreement from presenters to show repeats of their programs, and Smith refused to give permission due to a long standing disagreement he had with the BBC which was nothing to do with Top of the Pops. Now he’s passed away they appear to have decided to respect his wishes.

But not the wishes of those who paid for it.
Anyhoo. 19 February 1987. Gazdav. Kicking off with Westworld and their Barney Rubble guitarist. There are drums on the track but not on stage. Elizabeth Westwood is a cutie. This is a great track. Good darts music. Rectangular electric guitar. Interesting.
Can't be bothered with Carly Simon or Curiosity (again). Charts start off with Bananarama at 40 with something that the BBC did a video for, for the programme In At The Deep End. Not the best material for a clip. Rosie Vela? Forgotten whether she was on at all. Timbuk3 still going up. 39-19 for Mental As Anything is a rare climb. The Jets seem to have multiplied, changed colour, and changed sex.
Eric Clapton. Oh, THIS is "Behind The Mask". Didn't really know the title. It's a bit Bruce Hornsby meets Van Halen. Top 10. Ben E still topping the charts. Christ alive, Europe is really, really, really sh*t on the playout.
Hello, they are playing "Male Stripper". Starts off like Yazoo's "Don't Go". They're all Paul Rutherford clones. Heh, it's actually not bad. There's something rather dark about it. Despite the hollering females in attendance.

5/3. Long and Davies. The Christians. Religion, surname, or first name? Augh, it’s lyrical cliche time, how bad modern life is. Bits of industrial and even China to interrupt the general yuppie stuff. Can’t be bothered.
A-ha. God almighty, their abilities ran out quickly, didn’t they? One great single, one OK single, and ever since it’s been dire. This is not even muzak.
Erasure. Chorus in search of a song. Don’t remember the weird language stuff at the end. Not convinced by Andy Bell. Sounds like Alison but doesn’t seem to have the same effect on stage. Showy, rather than earnest.
Top 40. Heh, here’s Alison herself. The Christians were on despite non-moving? Kssh. Should have taken a punt and gone down to The Primitives at no. 78.
Mel & Kim with something rather sassy and streety. I like that they’re not perfectly co-ordinated, shows they’re not stage school brats. They seem to have a lot more moxie than the standard SAWmill abomination. Bright future for this pair.
Breakers. We have a record from about 1958 and two cover versions. Wow, what a generation. Jackie Wilson. Not much plasticine this time, limited stop motion, more about a dancing couple. I have nothing to say about Mercury or George because they are both completely, 100%, pointless. Three top ten breakers, odd.
Top ten. Mental As Anything. That would be a splendid no. 1. Indeed so would 2 as well. So, the top three is two ancient songs, and a film thingy. It’s dire. No wonder I was eschewing popular music at this time for Sugarcubes and Weddoes. There’s nothing contemporary worth listening to. As is emphasized with Sledge on the playout. Just a cut above everything modern in the charts. Barring MAA.

Inappropriate comment from the past alert: “That’s Pepsi & Shirley, they really move well, don’t they?” 😂
Marti Pellow looks like the happiest man alive, like he just can’t believe what’s happening to him. He’s escaped Scotland!
I have never seen anyone sweat like John Farnham is in that video, someone should’ve put up a yellow wet floor sign.

Unfortunately we will only get one edition in September because all the rest that month were co-hosted by Mike Smith and the first two weeks in October so we will miss a large chunk of editions but we have a continuous uninterrupted run until then. It's ridiculous i know but they have to respect his wishes and as he is now dead that cannot change. I just wish they could edit out the DJ links for those editions far better than missing them at all. www.tapatalk.com/groups/popscene/1987-t1350.htmlLooking at those TOTP listings on Popscene, they are missing a no.1 from August which is Michael Jackson & Siedah Garrett - I Just Can't Stop Loving You, which they couldn't show because there was no video available at the time

We will also miss the Christmas edition which is a pity because it includes the last TV appearance of Andy Gibb introducing his brothers at the start
