Phil"ip" Oakey. Bates introduces this as together. Don't know if he refers to Oakey and Moroder or has forgotten the rest of the song title. This though is f***ing brilliant. There's a 1981 feel to it, and that's a very good thing. Remember when computers were the future? Oakey in the video though looks like he hasn't washed in a while. Trying to be all 1957 greaser. He's pulling it off in the same way as Rodney Trotter did with Nervous Nerys. Just catching up with this one. I don't have my vinyl collection with me atm, but I think Forever In Electric Dreams was credited to Philip Oakey (or Oakley as the caption had it). Whatever, it's a great song.

Yeah, it was definitely credited to Phillip.
'Phillip Oakey and Georgio Moroder' is an artist credit which could do with a few syllables taking out of it really. At least they didn't go with 'featuring'.

Double twos, double ones. Peel and Vance with "a real blisterer". We start with Nick Heyward, which is not exactly the definition of "blisterer". "Warning Sign" had a vivid monochrome sleeve. It really stood out in the local record shops, sitting there for months on end. Not at all sure what the Butlins dudes are there for. There's some rap going on cos Heyward is all rad and that. God, this is awful.
Chicago. No.
Kane Gang, warming up for their Byker Grove gig. Would have been a decent single had it not been for the superior original.
Human League trying to be all grown up. Doesn't work with their synth sound.
Can skip Billy Ocean, not that bothered to hear it again. Huey Lewis goes up from 40 to 39. Unusual move. Murray Head, "One Night In Bangkok". I had a night in Bangkok, it was the King's birthday and there were Chinese lanterns by the thousand pouring into the sky. Had I not had to be up at 6am to catch a train to Cambodia I would have enjoyed it more. He's doing this live, perhaps because it's difficult to mime the spoken word bits. Although the chorus is mimed. Which is a problem as the sound mixing is all awry.
Charts. Depeshay. Shakin' Stevens with one I've forgotten, deservedly so, this is a Christmas weepie and a retrograde step from the upbeat braggadocio of "This Ole House".
Top ten. Kershaw and Limahl doing well. DD never made the top. Jim Diamond at 2. f***ing Khan still at no. 1. Can't be bothered. Given that she can't be bothered to turn up in the country which has given her a no. 1 single. Playout is the pleasant Limahl choon. After a shoutout for Entertainment USA. Sounds interesting, wonder if they will repeat that.

Neunundzwanzig. Powell and Long. Hm, this is all repeats; Kershaw, Eurythmics, Slade. But now most of them are wearing Feed The World t-shirts. They were a gigantic thing. And were regularly bootlegged. There was one chap interviewed about it on Breakfast TV, denying he knew anything about Band Aid, and thinking it was just a slogan.
Finally a new song. Tina Turner. Whose heyday was the 1960s. Not that interested.
Kool & The Gang. God almighty. Perfect timing for a UK tour though, they can score a no. 1 hit.
FGTH come straight in at no. 3. That's bad luck for Jim Diamond, he's going to get squeezed out of a chart-topper.
Charts. Rupert the Bear seems to be at no. 39. Video of Madonna with some old cack. Charts again. Alvin Stardust with more old cack. This is a very poor show. There's hardly anything new at all.
Top 10. Hello, Khan IS off the top. Jim Diamond does get his own no. 1 after all. He does a little 1 at the end of his performance. He will then tell people in interviews to buy Band Aid rather than his own single. A noble self-sacrifice that deserved better reward.
We get a new song on the playout. Black Lace, oh joy.
Well, that was a pointless show. Other than the new no. 1.

20 December. Biiiiiig jump. Bates and Long introducing Roy Wood "with the Kempsey School", Long is keen to credit them pre- and post-, which is generous of her. This is a different recording to the original, and it lacks the same visceral oomph as the original. But it is still one of the greatest Christmas songs ever - maybe the greatest ever recorded. Idiot crowd cheering before the final line. Roy Wood is one of the most underrated stars Britain has produced.
Paul McCartney in his attic. Is that Anne Frank in the background? Opens up a Rupert annual to see the Frog Chorus. I never quite understood what was going on with this, there were rumours that there was going to be a full film, but then nothing happened. Quite a complex thing to produce a full blown animation for a one-off single. McCartney gets lead credit but he does eff all in this. This is however a quite magnificent single. It seems to get better with time. Le mot juste is "charming". Any other time of the year, and, indeed, perhaps any other Christmas, this would have topped the charts. It's just blown out of the water by the top 2. I don't remember the hot air balloon bits. Frog Chorus only gets a namecheck on the chyron.
And the Christmas mood comes to a jarring halt with Bronski Beat. This sounds very out of place. Reminds me of Sade, albeit it is a little better. Crowd is not into this at all, it's not a party song, rather introspective. No need for the clarinet though. Long gives a shoutout to the b-side. Which sounds like a New Ordered version of the a-side.
Spandau Ballet next. I accidentally muted this and that improved it a lot. Video is meant to be all arty, it seems. Oh, when the chorus comes in, I remember it. Still rubbish though.
The Xmas atmos continues with the Council Collective. Who? Oh, I see Weller and Buxton. Oh. Junior Giscombe is on it. Well, that explains how it got onto TOTP. Does nothing other than prove that, the further he gets from The Jam, the worse Weller gets. Basically a song to support the miners' strike, and the family of someone the miners murdered. Slight dichotomy there.
Charts. Roy Wood is credited with Wizzard this time. Whoever was doing the graphics was not big on consistency. We stop at 26 for "a future number 1 from Foreigner". Yeah, Bates, we'll see how that plays out. Foreigner could certainly do with one, rammed up at no. 2 for 10 weeks behind Neutron Bomb back in '81. Starts off quite mellow, with Tom "Thompson Twin" Bailey's synth work quietly understated. But throwing in the New Jersey Mass Choir is a touch of genius. Long gives Bailey a shout-out, she's quite good at that.
El charto. Lots of Christmas songs by big names here, Queen down to 22. They played Spandau despite them not moving? Jeez. Alvin Stardust in the 40 twice. Talking of Bailey, we go back to 23 (per Long) and 20 (per graphic) for their "Lay Your Hands On Me". This time the graphic is right. Another non-mover though. They're struggling this week. Don't remember the weather being so bad. The religious theme in the title is helped by an uplifting chorus, but the remainder of the song is a bit meh. Bailey's guitar miming is all over the place.
Top 10. They mention Glitter at no. 7. Toy Dolls at 6, couldn't they play them? They're right up there with Madonna, Wham!, McCartney and the biggest-selling single ever, that's quite some company. Oh, couldn't they have had this push last year instead of the f***ing Pickets?
Anyway, Band Aid, with Paul Young having to go first in front of an assembled mega-group, that's some pressure but he is a superb singer so no problemo. This is, in itself, another brilliant song, even taking away the charity element. It also made my Christmas prezzie for mom easy for 1984. She always liked Tony Hadley. Song is interesting in that it doesn't have a chorus. The motif runs throughout though. neil is in the video, he wasn't allowed on the song. Your answers for Pointless are Jody Watley, Glenn Gregory and Marilyn.
We close with...Ghostbusters? Why? Odile Dicks-Mireaux does the costume design. For whom? Sarah Dewis is on graphic design, to be fair I like the use of Clarendon.
Much, much better show than recent ones.

Good to see someone sticking up for the Frog Chorus! I also think We All Stand Together is a brilliant classical pop children's record. Changing the subject a little .... With the 1985 episodes imminent, how many are now at risk of being "Weinsteined" because of Aled Jones alleged behaviour; on top of the 16 "Smithed" episodes?

The only TOTP appearance of "Walking in the Air" was on an episode (in December 1985) that was already "Smithed". So as regards solo appearances, no more episodes lost. Not sure if he was on any other hits that year?

Please don't hate me for saying this, but the 6th and 13th December episodes were put up as download links on a couple of other forums a week ago but unfortunately they've expired now. I wasn't that fussed as I hadnt caught up with the previous two episodes but I'm sure it would have been of interest to people here. The downside to being behind with the shows and this thread. Sorry

I like the Frog Chorus as well, and I was well offended that they mentioned Gary Glitter in the countdown, how is he even there, I've not seen him on TOTP for YEARS!

I have both the missing episodes.
They couldn't show the Toy Dolls on 20th because they were on 13th December episode. That probably helped them climb up to #6 from their entry position of #16 or wherever.
13th December episode also had Tears For Fears, Kool & The Gang, Black Lace, Gary Glitter, Madonna and both Wham! and Band Aid, of course.
Shaky was going to release a different song for Christmas but they didn't think they'd have a chance to get to #1 this year so they're going to release it next year instead... I wonder how it will do.

Isn't Christmas 1984 "fun" though? Paul McCartney with his frog song, Madonna with Like A Virgin, the Toy Dolls with Nellie The Elephant, even Black Lace with Do The Conga..

Maybe they will wait until next year to start 1985 so there may be a bit of a gap.

Assume we are getting 1985 soon? Top Of The Pops The Story Of 1985 and Big Hits 1985 have been confirmed and they will air in the New Year. The usual Top Of The Pops Christmas & New Year Specials also confirmed.

Oh Christ, did I just hear Paul Weller rapping? I never expected that, surely one for the Forgotten Hits thread!
And Read just called I Want To Know What Love Is a future number one. He must have borrowed the BBC time machine
