Which of these songs in the year 1986 in your view should not have been #1, I am doing polls for the whole Eighties this time, once we have 10 winners (we have to split up some years there is not enough options on a poll to match the #1's in a year plus joint winners) we will have a last poll to decide which song out of the years 1980-1989 should not have been #1.
These are 3 day polls this time.
Happy Voting

Whilst the "obvious" choice is the Chicken Song I reckon both Chris De Burgh and Nick Berry may provide it with some competition, and one of those two may even take it.
A shame for Chris De Burgh as prior to this song he was a great musician.
The same goes for the one that got my vote. Loads of great songs and they go and reach #1 with this one...

Some real horrors here. Could have provided 5 of the decade's 10 worst #1s.

I don't think it is. It is novelty. Novelty doesn't necessarily mean bad. In this case I think it was quite funny. Notably though the other "novelty" number one of the year only picked up 1 vote.
As for me, well I voted for Caravan Of Love which was really nauseating and that's a shame as I really like the Housemartins and the Beautiful South and most of what Paul Heaton has been associated with.
And for those who think "The Lady In Red" defines Chris De Burgh, it really doesn't. This is Chris De Burgh when he was good (in my opinion anyway).

I don't think it is. It is novelty. Novelty doesn't necessarily mean bad. In this case I think it was quite funny. But it wasn't. The Chicken Song was designed to be as irritating as possible, as it was parodying Black Lace and their imitators. I defy anyone to listen to this dreadful songs 3 times in a row. And for those who think "The Lady In Red" defines Chris De Burgh, it really doesn't. This is Chris De Burgh when he was good (in my opinion anyway). But I do agree with you on this point. CDB destroyed a flourishing career with the Lady In Red. I still enjoy many of his earlier recordings.

Re: Spitting Image, as it was designed to parody Black Lace & novelty records and it did its job perfectly, then it should not have been voted for because it achieved its aim. Unless people voted for it not realising it was intentional (in the same way some people today don't realise Al Murray's The Pub Landlord is a p*** take on the BNP/homophobic/Daily Mail reading Jim Davidson type of people). Also you are spot on about the Lady In Red did harm Chris De Burgh's fan base, as before that song he was a credible singer/songwriter for people who liked "real" 1970s throw back singer/songwriter types (see also Chris Rea; Dire Straits) and not that (so called) horrible 1980s synth pop stuff. Personally I would have voted for Every Loser Wins. A dreadful sung, sung & produced badly from a British TV soap .... instrumental in giving a certain then young music executive (who had a hit in the early 1980s as WonderDog) inspiration about how to produce successful novelty tat records which he has managed to inflict on numerous occasions to great effect in the 1990s/2000s/2010s.

Boris Gardiner - horrible record. and two other voters agreed with you. Not me though,I've always liked it. Chicken Song and lady in Red deserved their votes though.
