I can't remember who I voted for. There's nothing there that stands out as being awful, so I probably went for Beatles for being the song most likely to make me change the radio station, for just not being my cup of tea.

I'm probably the only one who will have voted for this particular song. Paul McCartney said it was his favourite song of all-time at the time but I've always hated it with a passion. I'm assuming you voted for A Whiter Shade Of Pale .... which was John Lennon's favourite song of all time at the time. He was well known to have played it repeatedly in his Rolls Royce; and at one occasion George Harrison insisted on getting out of the Rolls Royce because John played it too frequently, as it got on George's nerves. When it was released in England, Lennon (and friends in his circle) reportedly confused Brooker's soulful vocals with Steve Winwood, who had popularity at the time with The Spencer Davis Group. For your info, Paul McCartney's all-time favourite song was (and as late as 2007 when Radio 1 was celebrating its 40th anniversary he selected it as his all-time favourite song) the Beach Boys' God Only Knows. Disappointed at the "scorchio, sminky pinky, Boutros Boutros-Ghali" winner. I voted for Long John Baldry, but it was a close call between that and the dodgy Sinatra duet, which was a work and quality & distinction compared to the 2000s Xmas #1 cover version taken from that appalling album "I'm Minging at Swinging" or whatever that Norman Wisdom tribute act called it.

The Foundations and Long John Baldry songs that reached #1 at the end of the year were both written by the same songwriting duo: John MacLeod and Tony Macaulay.

Quite correct I did vote for 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale', always a song I hated - really depresses me when I hear it. Did know that Paul McCartney had said recently his favourite song was 'God Only Knows' which is more like it as it is an absolute gem of a song. But saw not too long ago a clip of him in 1967 saying that 'Pale' was his favourite at the time. Did not know, however, that it was John's favourite. Who'd have thought he had bad taste!
