wouldn't put Heart's Alone or Whitesnake's Is This Love in the same sentence as any Darkness songs...

More Than Words was Embrace's second hit in 1991, the first was Get The Funk Out. They actually would get to NM #1 in 1992 with the wonderfully anthemic "Song For Love", better than "More Than Words" in my opinion.
On the subject of rock ballads though, "Song For Love" kept Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters" out of #1. Metallica did eventually get a #1 but would have to wait 16 years for it. Perhaps they thought the day would never come...

Asked once before but didn't get a coherent answer I think he thought you were being sarcastic as did I to be honest, its Earl Purples Personal chart it has being going since the 70s ,everyone that matters follows it, its what the top 40 would look like if we were all not so stubborn and just liked real music that NM promotes and not the wrong stuff that everyone buys hehe

kinda thread-killer when people start talking about personal charts don't steal Gezza's thunder sorry Borneo I agree actually, all personal chart talk should stay in the personal chart forum, nobody really cares where a particular song gets in our made up charts its actually makes us look a bit sad and pathetic, will stick to the official charts for the rest of this thread

With regards to 1991 as a year for music though, does anyone else feel that the year was good around March-April-early May and good at the end of the year but generally very poor in between with the exception of a few songs?

cant remember but generally it was my favourite year musically of the 90s. So many brilliant albums and loads of great records that got nowhere near the charts including my first indie treasure. Worth it for 'Screamadelica' and 'Nevermind' alone not to mention 'BloodSugarSexMagick' and they were all released this month in 1991.

I reckon 1991 was a better year for albums than singles: not that I'm a particular fan of Nevermind or Screamadelica but I recognise their importance - and when you add in Out Of Time, Achtung Baby, Bandwagonesque, Seamonsters... not that I liked much of that stuff at the time of course.

Nevermind, Screamadelica, Loveless, Bandwagonesque, Blue Lines, Out Of Time... all fantastic albums. '91 was indeed a great year for albums

There are some good albums from that year, although I am one of the few Wedding Present fans who never really got into Seamonsters.
I also think Innuendo was one of the best albums of the year and was actually one of Queen's best albums. It wasn't considered that fashionable at the time to still like then until 24th November when all of a sudden it became fashionable again.

17TH AUGUST- I'M TOO SEXY- Right Said Fred (6 weeks)Look away from that tinny sounding beat and low production values clearly identifying this song for what it is (made on a shoestring budget) and this is a rather gentle critique of the fashion industry. Allegedly lying to their bank manager to obtain the funds to make the song the Fairbrass brothers, and the other one, more than earnt enough to pay him back and were, for 12 months anyway, one of the best selling acts in the country earning 4 top 10 hits and even a US No 1 with this song. I recall this being at No 2 for those six weeks waiting patiently to see if anything would dislodge the record that we dare not say, if I'd have known the sales (and that it was never within 30k of Adams in any week when they were top 2) then I wouldn't have got my hopes up. It was certainly one of the records of that summer, seldom off independent radio, though if I recall correctly Radio One got quite snobby about it after the initial fun had subsided. No matter it was still the fourth biggest hit of the year selling a fraction over 500k. I confess I bought this on 12" so I must have quite liked it and to be fair I think it will always have a place in my heart, the band themselves were quite endearing, always seeming appreciative of what success they got, presumably they knew that they weren't "pop stars" per se, and that neither singing nor dancing were going to keep them going. A string of appearances of TOTP in increasingly revealing outfits, coupled with camp pop tunes kept them in the public eye for 2 years before the UK moved on, and it was fun while it lasted- let's not be too harsh now....
