Rewind to 1985, and Madonna had the number one and two! I have the same birthday as her too! As for album birthday number ones, ABBA’s Gold: Greatest Hits (2008), Michael Jackson’s The Essential (2009), and Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black (2011) are my favourites. Funny how they all got to number one years after their original release!

My goodness me I have had a lot of abject dross for birthday #1 single:
1971 - Knock Three Times - Dawn (1) : An annoying corny song. 1972 - Metal Guru - T.Rex (4): I love Marc Bolan's music but he's done better. 1973 - See My Baby Jive - Wizzard (4): I love Roy Wood's music but he's done better. 1974 - Sugar Baby Love - The Rubettes (1): I've always hated this track by one of the worst Glam Rock era's bands for stopping This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us by Sparks being #1. b*st*rds. 1975 - Whispering Grass - Windsor Davies & Don Estelle (2): For the "It Ain't Half Hot Mum" novelty factor, a surprisingly heartfelt stab at the Ink Spots standard. 1976 - Combine Harvester (Brand New Key) - The Wurzels (1): A musical rape of the Melanie track & it denied the superb Silly Love Songs by Wings as my birthday number one. 1977 - I Don't Want To Talk About It / First Cut Is The Deepest - Rod Stewart (3): I prefer the EBTG / PP Arnold's versions of these great songs.... Sod it we all know it should be God Save The Queen - Sex Pistols (5), but the chart compilers fixed it that week. 1978 - Rivers Of Babylon - Boney M (1) : I hate this song + it stopped You're The One That I Want being my birthday #1. 1979 - Sunday Girl - Blondie (4): Blondie have had better #1s and it kept the classic Dance Away by Roxy Music at #2. 1980 - Theme From M*A*S*H (Suicide Is Painless) - Mash (2): I've never been too keen on this track.
1981 - Being With You - Smokey Robinson (3): A decent pleasant tune, sung by a great songwriter. 1982 - Goody Two Shoes - Adam Ant (5): I got this as an 11th birthday present, and the B-side is stunningly brilliant "I've got a heart on my arm .... it says pure Sex .....it hurts ....I made it ... Yeah.... Red Red Scab....." 1983 - Every Breath You Take - The Police (5): Sting's finest 4 minutes. 1984 - Wake Me Up Before You Go Go - Wham! (3): A great song but a bit too girlie for me. 1985 - 19 - Paul Hardcastle (1): Firstly I always thought this song was far too gimmicky juxtaposed with the awful Shakatak backing track; and secondly it denied the greatest Bond movie theme ever IMO to be my birthday #1. 1986 - Spirit In The Sky - Doctor & The Medics (2): Better than Gareth Gates & the Kumars, but not as good as Norman Greenbaum; and it stopped the far superior Holding Back The Years being my birthday #1 (There's a bit of a theme developing here!) 1987 - I Want To Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me) - Whitney Houston (4): A great tune but it was far better incorporated in a track by the KLF that puts Paul Hardcastle to shame. 1988 - With A Little Help From My Friends / She's Leaving Home - Wet Wet Wet and Billy Bragg (1): Two terrible covers of two Beatles songs. 1989 - Sealed With A Kiss - Jason Donovan (1): A terrible cover of a drippy Brian Hyland track. Indeed that week's top 3 is a contender for one of the worst ever Top 3's. 1990 - World In Motion - Englandneworder (5): The 2nd best football song ever.
1991 - I Wanna Sex You Up - Color Me Badd (1): A drippy US vocal harmony group attack New Jack Swing with a cringeworthy song. 1992 - Abba-Esque (EP) - Erasure (3): A well intended faithful covers EP that signalled the end of their run as major chart artists & signalled the beginning of the Abba revival. 1993 - (I Can't Help) Falling In Love With You - UB40 (2): The Status Quo of reggae do a mediocre reggae-lite cover of a mediocre Elvis Presley song. 1994 - Love Is All Around - Wet Wet Wet (4): Sod it, this was a superior cover of the Troggs song, and the movie it came from was pretty good; and it stopped that awful atrocity by ManU being #1 for my birthday. 1995 - Unchained Melody / The White Cliffs Of Dover - Robson & Jerome (0): Simon Cowell you evil musical b*st*rd, this stopped the greatest record of the 1990s (Pulp's Common People; and the #3 Scream by MJ+JJ was rather splendid too) being #1 for my birthday. 1996 - Killing Me Softly - Fugees (5): One of the greatest cover versions of all time. Lauryn Hill had such a sublime voice. 1997 - Mmm Bop - Hanson (1): I've always hated this Janet Devlin destroyer of a song, as the track, the lyrics and the video really irritated me. Where's The Love ... now that's a tune. 1998 - C'Est La Vie - B*witched (2): Asexual image, blue denim jeans, overly perky tune = naff image. To You I Belong ... now that's a tune. 1999 - Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen) - Baz Luhrmann (2): Something about this track always riled me. 2000 - It Feels So Good - Sonique (4): A quality #1 song.
2001 - Angel - Shaggy ft Rayvon (2): This track don't feel like a #1 song. 2002 - Light My Fire - Will Young (4): A great cover of the Doors standard, a very entertaining video too. The very fact to this day Simon Cowell does not seem to rate him makes me like him. 2003 - Bring Me To Life - Evanesence (4): A great #1 hit single. I prefer My Immortal though. 2004 - I Don't Wanna Know - Mario Winans ft Enya & P Diddy (3): A relief to see this at #1 after those awful tracks by Eamon & Frankee. 2005 - Crazy Frog - Axel F (0): What were the public thinking buying this monstrosity. 2006 - I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker (With Flowers In My Hair) - Sandi Thom (5): I've always loved this song (as did John Lydon) as it annoyed both Punks & Hippies who failed to get the whole point of the song. 2007 - Umbrella - Rihanna ft Jay-Z (5): A brilliant track, better than hearing Chris Brown record it as Sexy Cinderella that's for sure. 2008 - Singin' In The Rain - Mint Royale (2): Curse you Simon Cowell & your BGT. 2009 - Boom Boom Pow - Black Eyed Peas (3): To be honest this track sounds better now than it did then. 2010 - Gettin' Over You - David Guetta & Chris Willis ft Fergie (3): Remember the time before you did not swear at the radio every time you heard a David Guetta production. 2011 - Give Me Everything - Pitbull ft Ne-Yo, Afrojack & Nayer (2): It kept Aloe Blacc's brilliant I Need A Dollar at #2, damn it.

1993: Pray - Take That (3) It's ok I guess, video is just cringe though. 1994: Love Is All Around - Wet Wet Wet (4) Great song! One of only two from 90's I didn't have to youtube. 1995: Never Forget - Take That (5) Probably one of my favourite TT songs, would have preferred this one to be number one when I was born. 1996: Wannabe - Spice Girls (5) Spice Girls at their best, love this song! 1997: I'll Be Missing You - Puff Daddy and Faith Evans (5) I had no idea what this song was without youtube, great song though! 1998: Viva Forever - Spice Girls (2) Bleuch, too bland for my liking. 1999: When You Say Nothing At All - Ronan Keating (3) Not bad to listen to every now and again. 2000: 7 Days - Craig David (4) TUNE! Had to be reminded how it went though. 2001: Eternal Flame - Atomic Kitten (1) Just yuck 2002: Anyone Of Us (Stupid Mistake) - Gareth Gates (4) Was a big Gareth fan back in the day, this song included but I cannot stand him anymore. 2003: Breathe - Blu Cantrell featuring Sean Paul (5) Why can't all Sean Paul songs sound like this! This was pretty sick. 2004: Thunderbirds - Busted (5) My favourite band when I was young, absolutely loved this! 2005: You're Beautiful - James Blunt (3) Can't deny that I liked this back in the day though unlike most I still don't mind listening to it if it comes on the radio. 2006: Hips Don't Lie - Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean (4) Not quite as good as the amazing Whenever, Wherever but still an awesome Shakira song. 2007: The Way I Are - Timbaland feat. Keri Hilson and D.O.E. (4) Much prefer this now than when it was out, really pretty good. 2008: All Summer Long - Kid Rock (4) Nice Summery number one, really liked this. 2009: I Gotta Feeling - Black Eyed Peas (5) Was going crazy for this back then! Still sounds great even now. 2010: All Time Low - The Wanted (3) Meh, not their best imo. 2011: She Makes Me Wanna - JLS featuring Dev (4) My fave JLS song, really like this! Pretty great number ones for me imo, girlbands excluding which is weird as I really liked both bands back then, just not those songs.

These are birthday #1s in the UK charts. I could rate my birthday #1s in the NM charts but they'd have to be adjusted to be more relative or they'd probably all score 10. (Yeah I've had sh*t #1s like Heal The World but that wasn't #1 on my birthday)
I'm going from 1965 onward: and I'm going to give the occasional 0 too.
1965: The Last Time - Rolling Stones (5) Has to get a 5 for being my actual birthday #1. Without this there'd have been no Bitter Sweet Symphony either...
1966: The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore - Walker Brothers (4) 1967: Release Me - Engelbert Humperdinck (2) 1968: Lady Madonna - Beatles (5) and is really great on ukulele and kazoo 1969: I Heard It Through The Grapevine - Marvin Gaye (4) 1970: Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon & Garfunkel (5) 1971: Hot Love - T Rex (4). They did better songs even though this was their longest running #1s. 1972: Without You - Nilsson (3) 1973: The Twelfth Of Never - Donny Osmond (0). Just one week at #1 and it had to be this week... Can't give this even a 1. 1974: Billy Don't Be A Hero - Paper Lace (3) 1975: Bye Bye Baby - Bay City Rollers (2) 1976: Save Your Kisses For Me - Brotherhood Of Man (1) 1977: Knowing Me Knowing You - Abba (4) 1978: Wuthering Heights - Kate Bush (5) although I didn't like it so much at the time this has become a special song for me since 2010 1979: I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynor (2). I hated it mostly for keeping Oliver's Army off #1 and then for being overdone at karaoke. 1980: Going Underground - The Jam (5) 1981: This Ole House - Shakin' Stevens (4). My birthday was a Tuesday and the new chart was counted down with this at #1. 1982: Seven Tears - Goombay Dance Band (1). Sun Of Jamaica would get a better rating from me but I really hated this. 1983: Is There Something I Should Know - Duran Duran (2). I hated this too for coming from nowhere to knock Bonnie Tyler off after 2 weeks 1984: Hello - Lionel Richie (3) 1985: Easy Lover - Philip Bailey & Phil Collins (4) 1986: Living Doll - Cliff Richard & The Young Ones ft Hank Marvin (4). You probably weren't expecting me to give that a 4 but how Comic Relief songs should be - funny. 1987: Let It Be - Ferry Aid (2) 1988: Don't Turn Around - Aswad (3) 1989: Like A Prayer - Madonna (5) 1990: The Power - Snap (3) 1991: The One And Only - Chesney Hawkes (3) but James was obviously better 1992: Stay - Shakespears Sister (4) 1993: Young At Heart - Bluebells (4) and Siobhan Fahey is credited as a co-writer on this too I think because she was the girlfriend of the guy from the Bluebells at the time in 1984. 1994: Doop - Doop (2) 1995: Don't Stop (Wiggle Wiggle) - Outhere Brothers (0). Take That just released a bit too late, would have got a 5. Love Can Build A Bridge would have got a 3. 1996: Firestarter -The Prodigy (3) 1997: Block Rockin' Beats - Chemical Brothers (2) 1998: It's Like That - Run DMC ft Jason Nevins (3). Got rid of Celine and ended the Spice Girls run, ha ha although Stop was a nice song. 1999: Flat Beat - Mr Oizo (0). There was a CD of that lying around on the street near where I live about a week ago. 2000: Never Be The Same Again - Melanie C ft Lisa Left Eye Lopes (3) 2001: Pure And Simple - Hear'Say (1) 2002: Unchained Melody - Gareth Gates (0) 2003: Make Luv - Room 5 ft Oliver Cheatham (2) 2004: Yeah - Usher ft Lil Jon & Ludacris (0) 2005: (Is This The Way To) Amarillo - Tony Christie ft Peter Kay (4) 2006: So Sick - Ne Yo (0) 2007: (I'm Gonna Be) 500 Miles - Proclaimers ft Brian Potter & Andy Pipkin (4) 2008: American Boy - Estelle ft Kanye West (3) 2009: Poker Face - Lady Gaga (3) 2010: Telephone - Lady Gaga ft Beyonce (2) 2011: Someone Like You - Adele (3) 2012: Part Of Me - Katy Perry (2)
How often do we downrate songs for what they kept off #1? Would we still all hate Shaddup You Face as much if it hadn't kept off Vienna? Do I hate "I Will Survive" mostly for keeping Elvis Costello off #1. And Chesney Hawkes - hard to hate this so much as it's not that terrible but it is nowhere near the class of "Sit Down" by James.

As for album birthday number ones, ABBA’s Gold: Greatest Hits (2008), Michael Jackson’s The Essential (2009), and Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black (2011) are my favourites. Funny how they all got to number one years after their original release! ...not really in the case of michael jackson and amy winehouse, as we all know what happened that led to sales of their albums going through the roof...

Once saw a review of that single that consisted of the single line "and a f***ing good job too".
