And you also had David Tennant linking it to Broadchurch/ Dr. Who, I just knew when Chris Chibnall was given the producing role of producing Doctor Who, he was after a cast member from Broadchurch. Also Olivia Colman was in the running as the new Doctor, I think picking Jodie was the right decision. I think it is fair to say the Independent Talent Agency have played a blinder in all of this. Not only because of its previous links to Doctor Who with #8, #9, #10, & #11, and a handful of his assistants but in the run up to the announcement of Doctor 13 whom is another client of theirs. Hence, at numerous times you had the big name favourites Olivia Colman; Kris Marshall; & Phoebe Waller-Bridge who are all on their Agency books being thrown out into the media as (with hindsight) Trojan Horse contenders, so shielding the actual #13. Whilst less than two weeks ago their were rumours that the former Doctor 8 (Paul McGann, whom is filming in Bristol for Holby City), had done some filming on an enclosed site with his audio book main #8 assistant Lucy Miller (Sheridan Smith whom is with .... Independent Talent Agency), possibly related to the forthcoming Xmas episode, or possibly another mini prequel, whilst she has been on tour starring in Funny Girl, when she did a week at Cardiff, where coincidentally a number of the cast including Capaldi filming the Xmas Doctor Who episode went to see her.

I agree with her. It's different but people will get used to it. I think Jodie will be okay.

Careful Robbie S1m will be after you! Maybe the chap we thought was going to be the Doctor will be the assistant, that way he only has to commit to a season or 2 before moving onto other projects, or will they go with an unknown, be interesting to see what age they are. Are we taking bets on her 1st words as the new Doctor? "these are new!" "still not ginger!" Me? Oh I've been busy arguing against the old skool dinosaurs on the DW forums for too long already! For my pick, I'd want a handsome young male companion, not as the muscle, as that would suggest the female Doctor can't cope, but possibly an intelligent lad (Luke Treadaway, another name in the frame would be ideal - he was her "Attack the Block" co-star and was also with Eccleston in "Fortitude") plus a female companion. I'm all for a team and Chris Chibnall loves an ensemble.

I still miss Matt Smith. Been watching a few older episodes on catch up. I grew to like Capaldi and the last series it felt like he made it his own and but top form but overall I'm not against a change or a female lead but it will take a bit of getting used too

Matt Smith grew on me as well. Can I just say that the doctor as far as I know is not a shapeshifter meaning he can take on any form, he regenerates, and if he was born a boy on Gallifrey... What episode was the first reference to the possibility that the doctor could be a woman, and what ep. did he take on female form? Bloke from murder in paradise as the assistant, oh my boss wouldn't like that, and yes it's better if there's a team.

I have been watching some classic Patrick troughton lately.
Sheridan Smith would be too feisty as an assistant to a female doctor. Shame they can't find a way to rescue nardole. He would be perfect. What is Louie Spence doing at the moment.

My daughter had heard that Nardole might be back? Just a rumour though I guess?

makes sense, or he would've just vanished for no reason, must be a reason why they never wrote him out of the last series

The Doctor is an alien from Gallifrey who became a Time Lord by attending the academy there. Regeneration changes every cell in his body and Romana (his Time Lady companion in the late 70s) deliberately regenerated in the story "Destiny of the Daleks", modelling several different bodies before she chose her form (as Lalla Ward), some of her choices were different heights, colours, species even. Opinion is split as to whether one of those forms is masculine as it's played by a woman but is quite butch and towers over Tom Baker. The Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann) claimed to be half-human on his mother's side, which seems to be a jokey comment, but his human-style retina is key to the plot, so perhaps he changed species partly as no previous incarnation had mentioned being half-human. When the Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) was about to regenerate he suggested he might have two heads or no head at all. The Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) initially thought his long hair meant he was a girl. It was in the Eleventh Doctor's era that the idea Time Lords can change gender was really cemented as he found the remains of his old friend (never seen on screen, but there are some terrific Neil Gaiman=penned trivia facts about him) who had been both male and female across different regenerations. The Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi) ran into Missy who turned out to be his old friend/rival The Master in female form and we finally saw a male-to-female regeneration when the Twelfth Doctor shot the General on Gallifrey in "Hell Bent" who went from a bald middle aged man to a younger black woman. She then quipped that the male version was a one-off and that she'd been mainly female (and had regeneration eleven times by then). So yes, it's a more recent thing that it's been mentioned in the show, but the whole history of Doctor Who has been like that. The First Doctor's renewal was a necessity of recasting, whilst his home world Gallifrey wasn't named until late in the Pertwee era and obviously the Time War was an invention of Russell T. Davies in the revamped era. It seems that the Doctor has been male on 14 occasions (including the War Doctor and the meta-crisis Tennant Doctor) so perhaps this is his one stint as a woman.
