She was quoting it as what Ron had said that ended his career, she didn't use it as a phrase of her own in a conversation.

But she's a (former) journalist who used to write a weekly column in the Daily Express ... so of course the media are going to look after their own.

And ron atkinson isnt a racist. He is misogynistic, politically incorrect and from the old school. He was one of the first managers to give black players a chance to play in the top english league when nobody else did. Hows he racist? Yes he used a racist word. Slap his wrist, but in all fairness desailly was fat and lazy and big ron is the kinda guy that uses a wide range of politically incorrect words. His actions are far from being racist. Its a bit rich for people to refer to him as "the racist".

If you use a racial slur whilst doing it, it's racism. Being 'old school' or politically incorrect doesn't exempt you from being a racist and saying things which are technically acts of racism.

Exactly what I thought Sim, if you use racist terms, surely you're a racist whether you are 11 or 111.

or on a completely different subject ohh that guy had consensual sex with a 15 year old 50 year ago, he is a pedo!

He's not an idiot if he knows what works in a football squad. If he calls them niggers to their faces or behind their backs, he's still spouting racism, regardless of the rest. It's not like an all-or-nothing stance. Also, just because he's also homophobic, sexist, abusive to other minorities etc, doesn't mean his racism is justified or cancelled out. My grandfather grew up with some pretty racist views as those were the times he grew up with, but once he'd accepted my mum marrying my dad and times moved on, he would never dream of using such words in public or indded in private. The fact he accepted my parents' marriage would seem to equate Ron's selection of black players. If he then called my dad a nigger would that mean he wasn't racist, because he'd allowed one into his family? Channel 5/Endemol knew exactly what to expect from Ron. He went on that show to prove he wasn't a racist some years ago when he tried to learn French or something and that just proved he was as bad as he ever was. Being old school doesn't give people a licence to do/say what they want and being tolerant of a minority but then spouting hateful language doesn't balance out. Also, I have to pick you up on your "most of England are racist" bit. What the heck does that even mean?! Where I live and the people I mix with, I don't hear any sort of racism. Not even the casual sort some seem to be okay with.

I might live a fairly middle class existence and have a good job, nice friends and live in a lovely area but growing up working class of mixed race and all the rest, I dealt with all that and got away from all the scum. I wouldn't tolerate it from one of my students who perhaps doesn't know better and is echoing a family member's view without understanding it and I certainly wouldn't tolerate it from an older relative either. And yes, I'm aware that there's a rise in Islamophobia and have heard of people blocking friends/friends of friends, but certainly no one that I would associate with either online or in real life. I was talking about in real life, not online as I tend not to live my life online, it being a massively negative experience generally, magnifying the tiniest of things into all-consuming issues stoked and worsened by keyboard warriors who wouldn't dare say the things they say in public. It's people like Ron and his apologists that continue the views that the young, ignorant generations lap up. He's not a scapegoat when he willingly signed up for the show. He wasn't tricked, he knows the format, he knows his own reputation and if he intended to change that, he was an idiot to begin with!

I don't support him or his views, I just think he is not the problem, he is a hate figure taking the brunt of hate, that's why I said he was a scapegoat, theres no doubting the guys stupidity and before anyone suggests im racist, feel free to ask my black, indian ex gf from a muslim family if i am or my best friends who are french and polish or his wife who is chinese i know better than most what it feels like to be discriminated against and it makes my blood boil when someone you love is the victim. but i just cast big ron off as a stupid old man that didnt know better and never will and it didnt bother me
