Railway Children - Every Beat Of The Heart. Loved this. Great, so very English, slightly fragile, sensitive, pop. A couple of other decent singles from this album too, though not quite in the league of this one. Glad it finally got them a hit, anyway.
Weezer - Buddy Holly. This is not bad at all, but there is something about the sound and attitude of this group that seems intensely annoying to me.
Mondays - Kinky Afro. Classic of its genre. Shaun Ryder in full on mode
Travis - Writing To Reach You. I think they were a bit of a dull, and certainly inconsistent band (the Del Amitri comparison fits there too - although I agree it works genre-wise more generally), but just once in a while they could put together something with a bit more quality and melody. This is OK.
EMF - Unbelievable. Definitely overhyped by the NME et al

Ride - Leave Them All Behind
The last Ride single to be a true shoegazing track and it was an epic, so good in fact that I don't think it left them anywhere else to go,their masterpiece. Their commercial and artistic peak reaching #9 in the UK and was of course a number one for me.

Manic Street Preachers – Motorcycle Emptiness
many argue about which song was their greatest but the 'Generation Terrorists' power ballad for me was the greatest thing they have ever done and every will do. A band that a couple of singles earlier could barely play and they write and perform this masterpiece, the song that showed their dream to sell millions was not a pipe dream. This reached #17 in 1992 and was a #1 for me.

Adorable - Sunshine Smile
My hidden treasure of the 90s, the greatest band Creation had that did not go massive, as I have said before it was a timing thing, they looked like the part, they had a great front man, their sound was maybe a bit too shoegazey and Brit Pop was just kicking off with bands like The Auteurs,Pulp, St Etienne and Blur. They straddled the two scenes and fell in between I think. But another perfect debut single in this list of many.

The Auteurs - Show Girl
Speaking of which! This was one of my most played singles at the time, yes it was a throw back to the 60s sounding like The Kinks just before Blur and I did lump them in together much to Luke Haines disdain, he moved away from commercial appeal as quickly as he could which is a shame, he was a very reluctant pop star I guess. This was another #1 for me.

Leave Them All Behind - actually disappointed me, rather, I'm sad to say. Having adored the previous 4 EPs (each of which was better than the last), and having come to love the "Nowhere" album (having been underwhelmed a little on first listen - - - not realizing that of course an album is not intended to be quite as instant, or insistent, as quasi-single-like EP tracks - and I love the album, greatly, still), I rushed out to buy this on day of release, and was a bit disappointed, in all... - certainly in the full length 9+ minute version. The shorter version (was that released in fact?) has less empty space in, but it doesn't have the melody - or indeed the carefully constructed atmosphere of numerous of their other tracks. Bit of a shoegaze dirge actually, so no, I don't think it is their masterpiece. (I think I may even have preferred, and may still prefer "Twisterella") (I see "suggested videos" at the end of the YouTube clip throws up "For Love" by Lush: for something in this genre I'd definitely plump for that over this)
Manics - "Motorcycle Emptiness". This is, of course, quite something very special. And yes, quite some progress, from their brilliant, intense, but truthfully musically chaotic introductions of the "Motown Junk" era. Love it still, but - - - well, I'm one of those Manics fans who still rates probably at least half of the tracks on "The Holy Bible" as being in excess of everything else they've done quality-wise. In terms of songs that aren't mega-traumatic or extreme to listen to of theirs low, yes, this is probably the best.
Adorable - never got me as a group, a bit bland and generic I thought, wallpaper music on the Gary Crowley show rather than something I'd actively seek out.
"Show Girl" - Great bit of pop.

Think I'd agree that "Motorcycle Emptiness" is the Manics' finest three minutes. Blind squirrel finding a nut. Ride - Taste. Just brilliant. Amazing to see them do something so overtly poppy, while still moody and aggressive. It strikes me the video had quite a similar theme to that of The Beautiful South's "A Little Time" which was about at around the same time. But beaten by a few years by this one...

Verruca Salt - Seether
Along with big names like Throwing Muses,Breeders and Hole there was another brilliant girl fronted band and they were Verruca Salt. This was a total indie anthem and I think I played it almost every week at Intergalactic. It reached #61 in the Uk was a number oen for me and was 3 in Peels Festive 50 in 1994.

Pavement - Cut Your Hair
Pavements first hit their song that generally slagged of grunge music but bizarrely actually got them noticed by grunge fans like me at the time and I became a fan of them hehe, not sure that was what they were hoping for. It reached #52 in the UK was a number 2 for me.

Fun Lovin Criminals -Scooby Snacks
Their 2nd single and it was probably the most zeitgeist song and band ever, using samples from Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction and that whole Cuban gangster vibe, they were the perfect group for the time of Tarantino, teh fact it stills sounds brilliant now when that era has moved on,shows it was more than just a novelty track. A top 30 UK hit twice and a number one for me.

Suede - Beautiful Ones
Highest post Bernard Butler era Suede song on the list and probably boosted by being probably the best song in their live set when I saw them last year. This reached #8 in 1996 and was a #3 in my chart at the time.

*************************NUMBER 38**********************U2 – Even Better Than The Real Thing - The Perfecto Mix
Highest U2 song on the list and that is only because of this remix, which was one of the finest of the 90s, when Paul Oakenfold was a god of dance music. It has dated a little as many Perfecto mixes have but it does such a great job of making Achtung baby era U2 even more club friendly. Think this cost me £7 on 12" as well This charted higher than the original version and reached #8 in the UK, it was a number one for me not surprisingly.

Beck – Loser
On another day I might have picked an 'O De Lay' single as the best Beck song but for now it is where it all began for me the brilliant 'Loser'. At this stage we thought he was just an Alt Rock one hit wonder with a funny lyric little did we know he would still be huge in 2014. Number 10 in Us,Number 15 in UK and Number 2 or me.

Massive Attack – Unfinished Sympathy
With 'Protection' and 'Teardrop' so low in the list, it has been a long wait for more Massive Attack, who actually had to call themselves Massive with this single was out as it was too sensitive with the Gulf War,seriously. Also Shara Nelson manages to walk down the street without annoying anybody unlike Richard Ashcroft. Beautiful voice and sound, total classic. Number 13 in the UK and top 10 for me.

R.E.M. – The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite
Just one REM song to come after this and I'm sure you can work out which I haven't had yet. This track inspired by 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight' is another uptempo highlight from 'Automatic For The People'. This reached #17 in the UK and was a number one for me.

Suede - The Drowners
Not long to wait for more Suede! This was their debut single and the one we were all waiting for and I wasn't disappointed one bit and today its still one of my favourites. This reached #2 in my chart at the time, think there is still one Suede song to come.

Goo Goo Dolls – Iris
A song that has taken on a life of its on in the download era, it was Goo Goo Dolls 2nd hit in 1998 where it reached #8 having been from the film City Of Angels and Dawsons Creek and it peaked at #50. But in the last two years 'Iris' has charted twice in the UK #3 and #12 having been covered by various reality music show contestants but it had been a constant presence in the Itunes top 200 for years. Possibly the best power ballad of the 90s, it was a number #2 for me in the 90s.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Tonight, Tonight
Another ballad this time its one of the highlights from the Pumpkins classic album 'Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness', thsi has a brilliant colourised pastiche of a 1902 sci fi movie 'A Trip To The Moon'. This was MTVs video of the year in 1996. A number one in my chart predictably and it reached #7 in the UK, their biggest hit.

Its another Hidden Indie Treasure entry, A shoegazing classic, even though they said they weren't but really, and their finest moment by far. I cant find a video for this and I'm sure it had one when I entered it for HIT. Sadly not a hit but it was a number one for me.

Lo Fidelity Allstars – Disco Machine Gun
In another reality Lo Fidelity Allstars are the poster boys of Big Beat not Fatboy Slim, looking forward not backwards. I really thought they were going to be the Oasis of the scene and a few years later Kasabian would take over where they left off in a more lad rock friendly style. Honestly I though this was going to be a top 10 record, not helped by Kim Deal blocking the 'Cannonball' sample on its re-issue and it being released as the inferior mix 'Blisters On The Brain' which also ended up being the version on the album. This video is the original and best 'Disco Machine Gun' if you have never heard this, check it out, might make it a HIT one day. This was my number 2 record of 1997.
