TheThorne389 Seal – Crazy You said it reached No 5. Not sure where you got that from, it reached No 2! I was miffed at the time that it was kept off No 1 by Enigma - Sadness, a song at that point I couldn't see the appeal of. I can now but Crazy is still the better song. Btw, sorry i'm so far behind only reading bits each time i'm on, the problems accessing the thread at one point (the same part of the thread which vastariner flagged up) didn't help though...But has been reasonably ok for a while now. And it was released in 1990, but actually peaked in 1991. One of those releases that got caught up in the Christmas rush.

Also, sorry if it feels like i'm having a go, this is an excellent thread, (wouldn't be taking so long to get through if it wasn't, although admittedly as I said initially I did join late) but you missed off 387.

Whilst I've had a look at this thread on numerous occasions, I don't think I've commented on it.
As ever with threads like this it is a mixture of several brilliant songs, that I also love, some gems which I had forgotten about, some tracks that make me go "really, are you having a laugh"; and the occasional, oooh, I thought I was the only person who remembered and liked that song.
All in all exactly what a marvellous thread like this should be all about.
PS. When you get to the end are you going post the Top 1000 in a recap?

I read somewhere that Veruca Salt didn't know what a verruca was. They didn't know the derivation of Roald Dahl's character's name. And were quite surprised.
I've tried to see the appeal of "Iris" and singularly failed. Dreadful.
"The Drowners" though, excellent single. I don't think Suede have ever been as good as they were in those earliest days.

As for the missing number, I thought i fixed that.

*************************NUMBER 29**********************
Wannadies - You And Me Song
Basically a song I have loved more and mores since its release, I charted it twice but it did to better the second time after featuring in Romeo & Juliet, it was a #1 in my chart the second time, think it was only #7 the first. It reached #18 in the Uk chart

*************************NUMBER 28**********************
Blur - Song 2
Vast has already said he isn't a fan of this song but when you are a indie DJ in the late 90s, this was one of the biggest tunes in your arsenal, I must have played this to death and I rarely listen to it now but it was such a 'moment' track and the dancefloor just went crazy for 2 mins. I number 2 in the UK and a number one for me.

Green Day – Basket Case
Oh dear Vast wont like this one either, Green Days finest rock track and still sounds amazing twenty years later. Another video that I have probably seen over 100 times. This reached #6 in the UK and another number one for me in 1994.

James - Sit Down
James were my t-shirt band of 1990-1992, I think I had 4 James T-shirts loved my red long sleeved 'Sit Down' the best. I was completely obsessed with them for three years and played this song so much that I made everyone sick of it, and over time I got sick of it myself. Terrible when a song that was so much part of your life becomes unlistenable but time has past and I can play it now but this position of 26 is more to do with the fact that it was tainted so much for me, it really should be in my top 10 of the 90s as it was my number one song of 1991, although I did know the old version it reached #10 but #1 on reissue.

*************************NUMBER 25**********************
Trashcan Sinatras- Obscurity Knocks
Not the most obscure song in the top 25 but pretty close, they were the most exciting new band to come out of Scotland in 1990, a massive track on night-time radio but it didn't get enough airplay from Radio 1 even though DJs like Nicky Campbell, yes he was a proper DJ once and very good I thought, and Mark Goodier were playing it to death. The album did ok in the US but both their first two singles didn't crack the UK top 75, just a beautiful song and the guitars are so lovely. They should have been the Scottish Stone Roses they were that good. A number one in my chart and top 5 for end of year in 1990.

I remember "Sit Down" on its first release and thinking "this is going to be a massive hit". Took a couple of years before I was proved right. Still waiting for "Burst" by The Darling Buds to follow in its footsteps...

I remember "Sit Down" on its first release and thinking "this is going to be a massive hit". Took a couple of years before I was proved right. Still waiting for "Burst" by The Darling Buds to follow in its footsteps... I adored the original version which John Peel played to death, but I was never as keen on the 1991 re-recording. The irony is much like other 90s anthems Radiohead "Creep"; Oasis "Wonderwall"; Blur "Country House"; Wet Wet Wet "Love Is All Around"; Bryan Adams "Everything I Do" ..... the band themselves soon got sick of it so by 1997 they were hacking off neutrals on the Festival circuit by playing their most well known track as the 4th song in, and after each performance of it Tim Booth would say "We've played our biggest hit so you go and f**k off if you want to..." (Personally, I agree with Tim "Sometimes" is their best ever song). Still by 2013 even the Great British Public had got sick of it, as not even Peter Kay & Comic Relief could turn it into a huge hit again:

*************************NUMBER 24**********************The Stone Roses - Waterfall
Speaking of which here they are, this is a substitute as the 24 song was from 2000, and yes it is from an album that was released in 1989 but the single came out in the 90s so it counts, I could have had 'I Am The Resurrection ' as well tbh. Not the first Stone Roses song I ever heard that was 'She Bangs The Drums' when I was round at a 'mates' house they played the album and I was awestruck, this was Summer 1989, he stole my girl but he gave me love of Stone Roses so we were even, and he did go out with her for 5 years, so good for him, we had only been together a week, anyway. It was a fair swap This reached #27 in 1991 and I cant remember where I charted it but it is brilliant anyway.

The Las - There she Goes
I see a trend developing, another 80s song that was bigger in the 90s. I did buy in the 80s though first time. First a hit in 1988 it reached #1 in my chart then, it did it again in 1990 on re-issue. Second time it reached #13 in the official charts. Starting to think these re-issues are a bit of a cheat, but they are classics.

*************************NUMBER 22**********************
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
In an early version of this list, this was in my top 10 but I realised I was just being influenced by popularism. It maybe their most famous song but its not their best , and yes it did turn the rock world and the charts upside down but I had to dock it places. It was actually beaten by the song still to come in my year end list of 1991 so I haven't revisioned things to much where it finished #9 of the year. It reached #7 in the UK Charts

*************************NUMBER 21**********************Field Mice - Missing the Moon
I did say their was one last obscure song and its another HIT song for me. The biggest single that Sarah Records released and definitely the most chart friendly betraying Sarah roots with beats and a 12". This mellow shoegazey style track meets a brilliant New Order style production and Bernard style vocal besting anything New Order produced in the 90s. Sadly it was the last Field Mice single just as they were getting popular. This is one of my most prized singles Oh and it made #1 in my chart and finished my #2 of the year in 1991 behind 'Sit Down'

*************************NUMBER 20**********************
Zoe - Sunshine On a Rainy Day
A trend you have been seeing in this top 30 especially are songs that were number one twice, I actually think this topped my chart three times throughout the 90s. A Balearic and Indie dance club classic, it somehow took on a life of its own and became a song worshipped by a cult few, me included. Listening to it 24!!!! years later it is hard to think why it was so special. It has a simple house beat and a powerful vocal and an insanely catchy chorus and she was hot as well. To be honest its not far from the sound that Madonna had a few years later with the 'Ray Of Light' album. But it is a magical special song to me. It only reached #53 on first release but a year later with a remix it reached #4 and was actually the 18th best selling single of 1991. It was top 10 in my both year end lists of 1990 and 1991.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Give It Away
The song that made me a fan, their finest moment and practically a perfect record. One of the first videos I ever saw on MTV , the powerful silver paint video just ingrained itself in my memory. It was eventually a hit in the UK and it was massive giving them their first top 10 hit reaching #9. I think this is most RHCP fans favourite track and even their haters give this one respect. It was a number one for me and top 5 of the year in 1991. Seeing a lot of songs from 1991 in this last 10.

Garbage - Vow
Its another brilliant debut single, I was in awe of this track from the first moment I heard it. Then finding out it was Shirley Manson ex of Goodbye Mr Mackenzie and Butch Vig on drums, it was awesome news. I thought she is finally going to be a star!! I bought the single in the now famous metal sleeve, I have all the others as well hehe. Just a perfect melding of Grunge and pop, with a large slice of Curve. I honestly thought the last record was perfect, this is even more so!!! It didn't make the UK 100 but it did chart on Billboard. It was a number one in my chart and my number one song of 1995!!!
