Along with various high-profile players, Arsenal have been linked with Forest goalkeeper Karl Darlow. Maximo Mark, is he ready for Premier League football?

Never seems to be a factor when Wenger signs a goalkeeper.

Dave "Only Person Who Applied" Hockaday is confirmed as the new Leeds boss... They had already approached Eamonn Dolan, our academy manager. Thankfully he turned them down, Nicky Hammond DOF even put a fairly strongly worded statement up on the website saying that the interest wasn't welcome. He would have been a massive loss if he'd gone, and I want him to be our next manager after Adkins even more now as otherwise we will lose him.. Contrary to what I said on the previous thread, Le Fondre apparently moved for £2.5-3m, which is more like it, we obviously weren't as desperate to get rid as I thought. It seems fairly clear now that the only reason we cashed in was to pay off an outstanding tax bill (which I think needed paying pretty sharpish). Daniel Carrico has also left to join Sevilla for 1.5m in the last couple of weeks or so, after spending a year on loan there. It didn't work out too badly, given he won the Europa League...It's easy to say with hindsight but he should have joined them when they expressed interest at the time we signed him (Jan 2013). Only effectively spent half a season at the club and hardly played. In other news, hopefully the takeover will be confirmed this week

Good riddance to him, the man and the club were made for each other... It means we have to wait rather longer (depending on the Champions League draw) to see what sort of reception he gets when he first plays in England.

If we'd gone up last season I'd have no hesitation in him being our number one, though would want to sign a good backup as he's only been playing for 18 months. Realistically the only reason he's linked with Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs and City is because he's English and would be a capable home grown back up. I don't see what he's done above many other keepers that warrants him being linked to such clubs. I'd hate for him to leave to a club where he's not going to be number one, it'd be awful to see him follow in the footsteps of Jack Butland.

You could be talking about Alex McCarthy and his link to Arsenal here, and maybe Newcastle and Liverpool as well at one point. The only difference being that McCarthy has been called up by England. You only have to look at Stuart Taylor to see what it can do to English keepers. On Taylor, I'm surprised he's joined Leeds, there's no Reading connection there anymore, and he was so much out of the picture last season it was easy to forget he was even still playing! He did ok in the PL the season before last, but I've no idea how he'll do for Leeds, especially having not played for so long! Oh, and it seems that takeover I mentioned about the other day, not sure it's happening anymore...

Hopefully he didn't go, County were poor, two different teams, one for each half and they got worse, we won 3-1 comfortably, and they should have had a gk sent off for a foul which gave us a penalty and another player for an elbow. I know it's only pre season, but if I was Robin I'd be worried, both gks looked poor, and they carried little threat up front.

Marske started their pre-season campaign on Saturday with a 10-0 win against Teesside League side Thornaby Dubliners. 7 different players on the scoresheet which is a promising sign.

If the opposition insisted that their players had to be Dubliners now living in Thornaby they can't have had much of a list of potential players

The Christmas/New Year schedule looks particularly heavy for Premier League teams this year:
Fri 26 Dec: PL Sun 28 Dec: PL Thu 1 Jan: PL Sat 3 Jan: FA Cup
Four games in nine days! In previous years where there has been a Saturday 3rd January (2008, 2003, 1997), there has been no new year's day fixture.
It seems a bit cramped, especially as the season is a week longer than usual.

I haven't examined the PL fixtures in any kind of detail but I suspect it may be due to the new format being used for the Euro qualifiers.

Anyone read The Secret Footballer books? Only discovered after he retired on Tuesday who it was, and I've had both books since Christmas but hadn't started them Finished the first one now, and read some of the second, some great stories, but also one or two shocking, plus another that's just left me confused.

Read them? I've never heard of them!! Tbf, i'm not sure it would have been publicised that much over there, it started as a column in the Guardian. I highly recommend getting them both, especially the second one (but that's just personal opinion), and there's Man Utd references in the first. Unfortunately, I'm not sure you'd be able to guess who it is. He has said he's played in the Premier League, but that was some time ago now, so you may have forgotten about him, assuming you've even heard of him. Hopefully more people have read them, or will do, so I can add more meat to the stories I've read so far, though at least two still leave me mighty confused about who on earth he's talking about! I should also add that not all of it is him, but it's 90-95% that is. So far in the second book, I've not seen anything to suggest less than 100%. Also stories that made me laugh, made me sad, and made me plain angry. The plan was for him to reveal himself after retirement, but his lawyers may put a stop to that.

Stags also beat Leeds 2-0 and lost 1-3 to Villa, and then beat Grimsby 1-0 away last night, and we now have a gk in Swiss Sascha Studer! Just need a back up keeper and one more midfielder and we are there I think. Things looking good up top, where we lacked a goalscorer and now have Liam Hearn and Alex Fisher. I hope we will be okay!

I read a lot of the Secret Footballer columns when they were in the Guardian. I've got the books but haven't got round to reading them yet.
