Not much here really striking me, other than Bass-O-Matic, bit of a dancehall classic there. Basically a William Orbit incarnation.

Just catching up on the last few posts. Sinead O'Connor has always been very hit and miss for me. On the right song her voice is fantastic but she has been responsible for a fair few duds as well. Blood Of Eden is one of her very best.
Thanks for reminding me of the Futureheads / Shirley Bassey collaboration. I haven't heard that for ages. And Geneva recorded some wonderful songs. Into The Blue is one of them - far better than the Kylie song of the same name.

The Oxford Britpop trio UK #43 debut single finished 5th in John Peel's Festive 50 of 1994. This exuberant song is written around the true-life incident of lead singer Gaz Coombes' arrest and caution, for being caught in possession of cannabis at the age of fifteen.

750 Frank Black - Headache 94 749 The Cure - High 92
748 Juliana Hatfield Three - Spin The Bottle 94
The former bassist of the Lemonheads went solo (sort of) to achieve alternative-rock stardom with the release of 1993's Become What You Are. This track feature on the soundtrack to the movie Reality Bites; and its video featured a cameo from co-star Ethan Hawke.
747 Babylon Zoo - Spaceman 96 746 Echobelly - King Of The Kerb 95 745 Tori Amos - Winter 92 744 Seal - Crazy 90 743 The Cardigans - Lovefool 96
742 Alisha's Attic - The Incidentals 98
Shelly & Karen Poole (the daughters of Brian Poole of 1960s group Brian Poole and the Tremeloes) scored 9 UK Top 45 hits between 1996 & 2001. This was their 5th single which peaked at #13 (meaning at that point they had a chart peak run of 14-12-12-12-13!). After 3 albums the duo split where Karen (the blonde one) went on to have a rather successful career songwriting for 00s UK based pop stars including the hit compositions "Red Blooded Woman" and "Chocolate" for Kylie Minogue; "Caught in a Moment" - Sugababes; Will Young - "Stronger"; Amy Studt's "Misfit" and "Under the Thumb"; and my favourite Groove Armada ft Mutya Buena - "Song 4 Mutya (Out of Control)". Whilst Shelly co-wrote and sang on Michael Gray's 2006 UK #12 dance anthem "Borderline".

The Californian alternative rock trio fronted by Grant-Lee Phillips had a sizeable USA alternative rock chart hit with this proto Jeff Buckley release from their second album Mighty Joe Moon.

720 LL Cool J - Mama Said Knock You Out 90 719 Notorious BIG - Hypnotize 97 718 5ive - Keep On Movin' 99
717 Shack - Natalie's Party 99
The second and final single from the Liverpool melodic indie rockers excellent, yet underachieving H.M.S. Fable album made UK #63.
716 Madonna - I'll Remember 94 715 Roy Orbison with kd lang - Crying 92
714 Kula Shaker - Mystical Machine Gun 99
At the tale end of Britpop and the millennium approaching, the English psychedelic rock band led by frontman Crispian Mills son of actress Hayley Mills and director Roy Boulting, and the grandson of John Mills delivered a truly bonkers yet brilliant tale of Armageddon. As the video is pants, I've included this live TFI performance featuring Arthur "Fire" Brown on the UK #14 lead single from their second & final album (first time around) Peasants, Pigs & Astronauts.
713 The Charlatans - The Only One I Know 90 712 Foo Fighters - This Is A Call 95 711 Simply Red - For Your Babies 92

710 Vanessa Williams - Save The Best For Last 92
709 The Jayhawks - Blue 95
The alternative country rock band led by Mark Olson and Gary Louris reached UK #83 with this harmonious The Flying Burrito Brothers meets Crowded House track taken from their 4th album Tomorrow the Green Grass.
708 Shakespear's Sister - Goodbye Cruel World 91 707 Adina Howard - Freak Like Me 95
706 Nanci Griffith - Heaven 91
The country folk singer from Nashville is probably most famous for "From A Distance", a song later recorded with greater success by Bette Midler. This Julie Gold cover was taken from her 9th album Late Night Grande Hotel produced by Peter Van Hooke and Rod Argent. Despite twice being released as a single, in 1991 and 2 year later to promote The Best Of Nanci Griffith, it failed to trouble the UK Top 75.
705 U2 - Stay (Faraway! So Close) 93 704 Lighthouse Family - High 98 703 The La's - Feelin' 91 702 Pixies - Dig For Fire 90 701 Tal Backman - She's So High 99

696 The Farm - Love See No Colour 91
The Liverpool band fronted by Peter Hooton are most famous for their two UK Top 10 hits (All Together Now & Groovy Train) taken from Spartacus; this is the title track of their major label debut and follow up album, but sadly it only made UK #35, as grunge was taking hold of the UK indie scene.
695 Alanis Morissette - Hand in My Pocket 95 694 Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity 96 693 The Prodigy - Breathe 96 692 Baby D - Let Me Be Your Fantasy 94
691 Public Enemy - He Got Game 98
Using Stephen Still's Buffalo Springfield - For What's It Worth as its musical bed, this the title track of their 6th album, was the soundtrack to the Spike Lee film of the same name. Thanks to Chuck D's usual brilliant thought provoking lyrics it reached UK #16, but failed to make the USA Top 100.

690 Katrina & The Waves - Love Shine A Light 97
689 Ruth Joy - Feel 92
Imagine Paula Abdul making a really good record (yes I know that is tough to imagine ...) with Soul II Soul. The former vocalist of Krush (1988's "House Arrest") sadly failed to go higher than UK #67 with this track co-written and produced by Mark Brydon (Moloko) and Kurtis Mantronik.
688 Wet Wet Wet - Love Is All Around 94 687 Saint Etienne - Nothing Can Stop Us Now 91
686 Nine Inch Nails - Head Like A Hole 91
Taken from Trent Reznor's industrial rock band's debut album Pretty Hate Machine, this was their debut UK chart entry at UK #45. It was co-produced by Flood just after he finished producing Depeche Mode's Violator album.
685 Sarah Brightman & Andrea Bocelli - Time To Say Goodbye 97 684 Radiohead - Fake Plastic Trees 95 683 Billie Ray Martin - Your Loving Arms 94 682 Primal Scream - Higher Than The Sun 91 681 B-52's - Love Shack 90

676 Bananarama - Only Your Love 90
The very uptempo first single from the girl group's 5th studio album Pop Life and was issued several months prior to the release of the album. Unlike most of their late 1980s material it was not produced by Stock Aitken & Waterman, and instead co-written and produced by Youth. Despite the excellent Philippe Gautier directed video, it only reached UK #27, and similarly underperformed internationally.
675 Blur - Chemical World 93 674 The Charlatans - Can't Get Out Of Bed 94 673 The Cranberries - Zombie 94
672 Howard Jones - Lift Me Up 92
This 1980s Stevie Winwood like recording was taken from his 5th and final major label album release on Warner Bros. (In The Running); this was the 1980s synthpop keyboardist final transatlantic chart entry reaching UK #52 & USA #32.
671 Crystal Waters - Gypsy Woman (La Da Dee) 91

670 Jeff Lynne - Every Little Thing 90
When you consider the level of success his ELO band had, and more pertinently his success producing George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, and the Traveling Wilburys; then it remains a mystery to my ears how this cracking track only made UK #59, & failed to make the Top 100 in the USA.
669 The Bluetones - If… 98 668 Ride - Leave Them All Behind 92 667 Human League - Tell Me When 95 666 Natalie Merchant - Carnival 95 665 George Michael - Jesus To A Child 96 664 Levellers - What A Beautiful Day 97
663 Maria McKee - I'm Gonna Soothe You 93
The former lead singer of Lone Justice, released this excellent country rock 1960s Stax homage as the lead single of her second solo album You Gotta Sin to Get Saved. Despite being produced by George Drakoulias this failed to chart in her native USA and peaked at UK # 35.
662 Blur - Song 2 97 661 En Vogue - Free Your Mind 92

I don't think Supergrass ever re-captured the adrenalin rush of "Caught By The Fuzz". Like The Boo Radleys and Dodgy, the worse they got, the higher in the charts they climbed.
"Goodbye Cruel World" (and Ride) stands out on this page - bitterly twisted. The sort of thing Altered Images may have morphed into had Steve Severin continued to produce them.

This list is great but its also showing my huge omissions , NO Luscious Jackson in my top 1000!!! seriously!! 'Lady Fingers' was brilliant, also the remix of 'Naked Eye'. Although their are areas where we do differ 'For Your Babies' must be the worst Simply Red song ever and that's like saying which is like the worst time I puked ever, where as 'Fairground' was a minor gastric backflow, i'm sure it still too come.

I beg to differ. "For Your Babies" is my favourite Simply Red song of the 1990s, a fantastic song about parenthood that stays the right side of saccharine. In contrast, like a lot of acts "Fairground" going to #1 is comparable with Stevie Wonder "I Just Called To Say I Love You", Prince - "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World"; Blur "Country House", etc. (One of) the worst things they (Mick Hucknell) did with the crowbarred sample of The Goodmen's Give It Up; and the utterly naff very literal video shot on the Pepsi Max Big One at Blackpool, meant Peter Kay and his excruciatingly hilarious Marc Park persona were around the corner to deservedly do to Mick Hucknall what Avid Merrion later did to Craig David. Spot the difference: ^ One of David Cameron's favourite songs, apparently. Which fits in nicely with one of my next batch of 10 songs.

660 Wendy & Lisa - Strung Out 90 659 Daft Funk - Around The World 97
658 Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Walls 96
Co-produced by Rick Rubin and released in July 1996 as the only single from their soundtrack album Songs and Music from "She's the One". This cajun flavoured song which reached USA #69 features Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham on background vocals; and the video features Jennifer Aniston.
657 Manic Street Preachers - Revol 94 656 The Prodigy - Voodoo People 94
655 Primal Scream - Come Together 90
Completely different to the subsequent Screamadelica album version remixed by Andrew Weatherall to feature a rousing 1972 Jesse Jackson speech. This earlier version released as a single in August 1990 was produced by Terry Farley reached UK #26. I was pretty peeved when I bought their 2003 Dirty Hits collection to find this track was an edit of the album version, instead of this.
654 Skee-Lo - I Wish 95 653 Queensryche - Silent Lucidity 91 652 Tori Amos - Professional Widow (It's Got To Be Big) (Remix) 97 651 Baddiel, Skinner & The Lightning Seeds - Three Lions 96
