Sly Stallone turned down The Terminator so James Cameron turned the classic Shakespearean actor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Who: Bette Midler Role: Delores Van Cartier/Sister Mary Clarence Movie: "Sister Act"
There's no doubt that Bette Midler—a muscal theater vet and overall iconic performer—would have been perfect for the role that eventually went to Whoopi Goldberg

they were the two film roles that stood out
and a tv role!
Who: Matthew Broderick Role: Walter White Show: "Breaking Bad."
Is your mind totally blown? Ours was when we heard that Broderick, along with actor John Cusack, are both rumored to have passed on the role of ailing chemistry teacher turned meth kingpin Walter White on AMC's behemoth 'Breaking Bad."

Can you imagine Al Pacino as Han Solo? Me neither and neither could Al much to Harrison Ford's delight I'm sure.

Sandra Bullock turned down Clint Eastwood and Million Dollar Baby.
I'd have thought she was too old.

Midler I can see in Sister Act.
However, I don't think Carrey would have carried off Edward Scissorhands. Too manic.

maybe I was too distracted in the dark in the back row in an empty cinema to concentrate on the film

The Bodyguard first surfaced in mid 70s as a vehicle first for Steve McQueen and Diana Ross and then Ryan O'Neal and Diana Ross.
Don't know which artists turned it down but it took over 15 years before it eventually appeared with Costner and Houston.

'million dollar baby' is a great film, but it's unspeakably depressing. i've only seen it the once and that was enough!

Not quite a film role, but Simple Minds' only US no. 1 was written by a couple of blokes in the Nina Hagen band, and Billy Idol turned it down. It became a massive hit Stateside after it was used in The Breakfast Club.
