221 Florence + The Machine – Dog Days Are Over
Florences debut top 40 in 2008, this sounds great now not sure I was such a big fan at the time. This reached #23. www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWOyfLBYtuU220 Damien Rice – Cannonball
Some may think this is a bit low but again I wasn't that into it at the time and it has grown on me over the years and at one point it was a bit over exposed as well. This reached #13 in the UK www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yqM--IMkX4219 Miss Black America – Talk Hard
Another HIT song by an indie band that should have gone onto to greater things, in an alternative reality they could have followed the same path as Biffy Clyro and sit this next to early Biffy, exactly. Maybe they are a bit more emo. www.youtube.com/watch?v=THBGYllRVZw218 Hockey – Song Away
Near the end of the decade, their was a spate of bands that sounded like The Cars which had minor success in US but didn't do much over here. Hockey were one of the better bands, the other one has a song to come. 217 Bombay Bicycle Club – Magnet
While BBC were still finding their sound, they released this indie rock track which really stands out in their back a catalogue, they never play it live but I still think it's ace. This was actually their first top 40, not quite true it raeched #39 in Scotland!!. www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEz0n6toVMo

216 Sébastien Tellier – La Ritournelle I often have a debate with Neil re the fact our charts should not be the end all and be all, we can still love music that we never charted. This reached #66 in 2005, I never charted it and was probably not even aware of it but over the years I just fell in love with it and it now finishes at #216 of the best songs of the 00s. Just a gorgeous electronic track. www.youtube.com/watch?v=crblDrrcunQ 215 The Hold Steady – Massive Nights If you haven't come across these guys they were kind of a Pitchfork endorsed pub rock band. This is taken from their breakthrough album 'Boys And Girls In America'. Craig Finn has a solo record out now. www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvSZzoG1AuQ214 Bloc Party – Flux Bloc Party's 3rd top 10 and one of their most electronic and probably their biggest seller as it came out in the iTunes years unlike their previous two.

I started this again yesterday then had to scrub my post as I had to do something else, we will get to 200 today 213 Muse – Plug In Baby
Probably still one of my favourite Muse songs this reached #11 in 2001, their first single released of 'Origin Of Symmetry' www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbB-mICjkQM212 Graham Coxon – Freakin' Out
I always think of Steve Lamacq when I hear this, its like one of his ultimate songs. This only reached #36 but it was a limited 7" only, think I bought it need to check, From the 2004 album 'Happiness In Magazines' www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBG2_MYdTS4211 Mew – She Came Home for Christmas
Mew have always been cult favourites on Haven and this Xmas single is just beautiful. Originally released in 1997 in Denmark. It reached #55 in 2002 in the UK.

210 Alfie – You Make No Bones Think this band are quite forgotten now, they were quite successful in the New Acoustic movement scene but I would really sit this song more with Britpop as it is very like The Bluetones. It was played on MTV2 so much and I bought the album on the strength of it but today this is the only song of theirs I ever play. It reached #61 in 2001. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssXNu2THMBo 209 Franz Ferdinand – Darts Of Pleasure
Debut single from the band, I think I liked it a lot when it came out but I much preferred what was to follow, I think this is a fair placing for it. This reached #44 in 2003 and only charted for one week, a perfect example of how the chart are perceived now, although a top 50 hit it probably sold about 500 copies that week compared to a 1 million streamed song now that doesn't go top 100. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rgo0TB08Tn0208 deadmau5 – I RememberNow for something completely different, deadmau5 is a DJ introduced to me by Zane Lowe, he covered many dance genres but this trance anthem it probably his finest moment. Just beautiful and atmospheric, I miss trance music in the charts. This reached #14 in 2009 www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGbRpdCRwt0207 The Chemical Brothers – Galvanize More dance music and the first feature for Q Tip, he will do it again in 2016 with 'Go'. The Chemical Brothers could do wrong at this time. It reached #3 in 2005 from the 'Push The Button' album. Maybe a song not to play to Donald Trump right now though hehe www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xu3FTEmN-eg 206 Nada Surf – Inside Of Love From quirky Weezer like alt rockers, they return in 2002 with a new sound much more emo and mellow and they released what is probably still their finest album 'Let Go'. This beautiful ballad remains their biggest hit in Uk reaching 73 in 2002.

This list is getting quite old now, even though I am posting it now and this group are probably higher than I would make them all now 205 Muse – Supermassive Black Hole
More Muse and this rock monster from 2006, another lead single this time from 'Black Holes And Revelations', this reached #4 www.youtube.com/watch?v=pta-gf6JaHQ204 The Libertines – Up The Bracket
Another video that makes me think of MTV2 straight away. This is probably my favourite Libertines song and I just loved this video, they just seemed like such cool people to hang out with. This reached #29 in 2002. 203 Bombay Bicycle Club – Always Like This
I loved this band I felt they got better and better as they went one and they really should have become huge stars, even after having a number one album they were still invisible,no wonder they broke up. Anyway this is where it began. This was their 2nd single and reached #97 in 2009!! Yes you can see we are in the post Indie years now. www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QKj62RKBrM202 Mumford & Sons – The Cave
I think most people will agree even if they aren't fans that this is the Mumford's finest moment. This was a difficult time when indie died and was replaced by folk in the chart but when it was good like this I didn't mind so much. Kind of gone full circle today hearing this now its not miles away from Alfie. It took a long time to be a hit eventually peaking in 2010 at 31. Maybe shoudl have counted this as a 10s song. www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNy8llTLvuA201 Primal Scream – Can't Go Back
Wow hard video to find. Another post indie/iTunes era song only reaching #48. I thought it was another sure top 20 hit for them. Only single taken from 'Beautiful Future' probably because they decided why bother. vimeopro.com/somesucharchive/kim-gehrig-music-videos/video/37102699

ok now we are in top 200 I think just about every song is a banger so here goes. 200 Spiller – Groovejet - If This Ain't Love (Radio Edit)
So only fitting we start with a club banger. Featuring the beautiful Sophie Ellis Bextor ex of The Smiths influenced TheAudience, what a change of style!! This was a number one hit in 2000 www.youtube.com/watch?v=syOK6zmpOe0199 Elbow – Grounds For Divorce
The highest placing for Elbow on my list, this song has really been over shadowed by its ubiquitous follow up and as time as past that was probably correct. It was great to here Elbow rock though. This reached #19 in 2005. www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxczVhG0os8198 Kaiser Chiefs – Ruby
One of several songs that define the 00s for me. They started as a Brit pop revival band in our eyes and I think they have become one of those bands that people will remember from this time. I have seen arguments that Indie and rock does bad in the charts because it no longer makes songs like this anymore but I think that is rubbish. If a new band released this song now it wouldn't go top 500 it is a fact. 10th biggest selling song of 2007 and a number one record! www.youtube.com/watch?v=qObzgUfCl28197 My Chemical Romance – Welcome To The Black Parade
Not sure the same would apply to MCR though, if a band like this appeared now in US with this image and sound, I think they would still be huge. We really were spoilt in this era as you can take such a brilliant band for granted. Merging glam,prog,nu-metal and emo with the pop sense of The Killers, I will admit now MCR I bought your albums but I never loved you. I should have.. To prove my point this was hailed as the greatest music video of the century in 2017 by MTV viewers. OMG and I forgot it was a number one as well. Earl Purple this is one you got right! 196 Snow Patrol – ChocolateAt one time these guys were probably my favourite band. 'Final Straw' is a brilliant album need to give it a playthrough again. This reached #24 in 2003, much more to come from this band. www.youtube.com/watch?v=FT62Gwv70kM

195 t.A.T.u. – All The Things She Said Seem to start each section with a big pop song and this is definitely no exception. Two Russian girls came from nowhere with this pop rock epic. A number one record of course and still sounds awesome. www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mGBaXPlri8 194 Manic Street Preachers – Your Love Alone Is Not Enough Featured recently in Rock Idol first appearance from the Manics for awhile. They still have one too come. Featuring Nina Persson this reached #2 in 2007. www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_OnFHJou4o193 Audioslave – Cochise I think if I compiled this list again it woudl have more rock in it just as my taste as changed. And this would be much higher. Brilliant collaboration of Chris Cornell and Rage Against the Machine makes this Led Zep style rock monster which is as good as the best of both bands. This reached #24 in 2002. www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDMvN45sjo4192 Broken Social Scene – Cause = Time
Only the second obscurish song today, the band are probably more well known now as Canada's 2nd biggest indie band collective. Even if it is a little obscure it still managed to reach #102 in 2003
191 Keane – Bend & Break Is it time for a reappraisal of Keane, we need to remember how great their debut album was. This was my favourite album track and was so happy when it got made a single but looking back it must have been a radio/video single as it didn't chart. www.youtube.com/watch?v=50LOhILlLMQ

190 Foals – CassiusI have always been a bit hit n miss with this band, I think this was the first track of theirs that I really liked. This reached #26 in 2006 and is probably too high here though. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARu_XbUg8bo This next 4 are absolute classics though 189 Arctic Monkeys – When The Sun Goes Down They have one more song to come but really this is just as good. Another band that I probably enjoy more now than at the time. Really I will probably redo this list when I ever finish it. This reached #1 of course. www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqkBRVukQmE188 The White Stripes – Fell In Love With A Girl A great track but just made even better by this fantastic video. Again talking of being spoilt can you imagine ever having bands like these in the charts again. Sometimes I wish I stopped listening to new music in 2009!! This reached #12 in 2004. 187 Fatboy Slim – Weapon of Choice From one classic video to another, arguably the best video of the 00s. The track was a double AA side with Star 69 but nobody cared about that, it was the Bootsy Collins voiced track everyone liked but more so it was the Christopher Walken dancing video. This reached #10 in 2001. 186 Jet – Are You Gonna Be My Girl
Ending this brilliant MTV2 like section is the best song by far by Jet. Showing Australia could keep up with US in the garage rock stakes, this still sounds amazing I guess as it was timeless when it came out. This reached #16 in 2003 and even went top 30 in US. www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuK6n2Lkza0

Ok we are back with a poppier section but still MTV2 friendly 185 Gnarls Barkley – Crazy A number one record first song to be number one on download sales alone and was number one for 9 weeks. i think I was brainwashed by Zane Lowe who played this song for about 6 months before it came out official. www.youtube.com/watch?v=bd2B6SjMh_w184 Orson – No Tomorrow
Another number one and famously one of the lowest selling number ones ever. It was just a standard pop/rock record so it was kinda crazy that it did make number one. www.dailymotion.com/video/xed6m_orson-no-tomorrow_music183 The Darkness – Get Your Hands Off My Woman
Debut single from The Darkness even at this point we didn't really know what we were in for that this band were going to be massive. Going totally against the nu-metal and emo sound of the time they brought back classic 70s rock. This reached #43 in 2003. www.youtube.com/watch?v=hI9eVW4cTR8182 Doves – Black and White Town
The lead single for their third album 'Some Cities' this reached #6 in 2005. One of my favourite indie rock bands of the 00s they have a few more to come. 181 Gwen Stefani – What You Waiting For?
Gwen Stefanis solo career as been very patchy going from brilliance to unlistenable. Her first solo single though was one of the brilliant ones. taking the No Doubt template and just turning up the pop. In fact I think it was ahead of its time in a few years most of the top 40 would sound like this. This reached #4 in 2004.

180 The Killers – Smile Like You Mean It Another brilliant single from them and we will have a couple more from their debut album 'Hot Fuss' higher up the list. This raeched #11 in 2005. www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1p_NHFd8jM 179 Ladyhawke – Paris Is Burning In the late 00s we have quite a few females doing 80s influenced electro pop but Ladyhawke was my favourite. She has more to come as well. This was her debut single and reached #47 in 2009. www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqWzfH71Bww 178 Tegan And Sara – Walking With A Ghost This was their 2nd single. Just a lovely indie pop tune with that kind of 'Juno' sound that was big at the time in US. Tegan & Sara have changed so much since this but you can here even in this the electro/edm that they will move more into. But 'Everything Is Awesome' this isnt!! www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtCGODjuRq0 177 Jimmy Eat World – The Middle The best emo band in my opinion but they were not as pretty as Fall out Boy or Panic or as visually interesting as My Chemical Romance but they have have all the best songs. This reached #26 in 2001 and was top 5 in the US. www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKsxPW6i3pM176 Paramore – Misery Business More emo this time Paramore and one of their heaviest songs. The lead single from their second album 'Riot!' . It reached #17 in 2007 175 The Strokes – Reptilia I always forget how good this is. second single from their second album 'Room On Fire'. This also reached #17 in 2004. www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8-tXG8KrWs

174 M83 – Kim & Jessie - Radio Edit How would you describe this electronic shoegaze. Anyway it is just epic love them so much. Shocked to see it didn't even make the top 100. www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5cgzcjqOtE 173 Interpol – Slow Hands One of the major sounds of the 00s was sounding like Joy Division and these guys and the scene really didn't start to eat itself as poorer imitators just keep coming along. This is their highest song on the list and reached #44 in 2004. www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNBJSei0XV0172 The Rasmus – In The Shadows - Radio Edit One of the unlikeliest number ones of the 00s was this nu-metal anthem which blended in euro pop hooks. This reached #1 in 2004.They are still going btw and set to play down by road this month 171 The Departure – All Mapped Out
And now one of those Interpol imitators but I'm sorry this song not only matches them but beats them for hooks. Another MTV2 staple they didnt really crack it big but they still managed to reach #30 in 2004.

170 Red Hot Chili Peppers – The Zephyr Song
A band that were strangely missing from Rock Idol think I might put that right if we do it again. 2nd single from the album 'By The Way' I think we all agree their last great album. It reached #11 in 2002. www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fcRa5Z6LmU169 Santigold – Lights Out
I really loved this at the time, now I'm not so sure why, actually i do it was the indie guitars in the background. Much bigger hit in Scotland than UK for some reason reached #52 there but only #103 for Uk in 2008. vimeo.com/77123807168 Sum 41 – Fat Lip
Now one of the biggest songs of the nu-metal era, you were never more than 2 hours away from this video on MTV2. It still sounds epic and has everything that was great about that genre. This reached #8 in 2001. 167 OutKast – Hey Ya! - Radio Mix / Club Mix
Another video that was on all the time was this but even worse this was on every video channel. This was #3 in the charts when my son was born in 2003. www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWgvGjAhvIw166 Auf Der Maur – Followed The Waves
Ex member of Hole and better than any of Courtney's solo music. This reached #35 in 2004. www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4LObO91WTA

165 The Coral – Goodbye Highest appearance for The Coral with this slightly psychedelic tune. This was their 2nd single taken from their debut album and reached #21 www.youtube.com/watch?v=atGPiczuf-8 164 Daft Punk – One More Time Haven't had a dance track for a while and this is their final appearance. This was released in 2000 and was added to their 'Discovery' album. It reached #2. Great anime video as well. 163 Papa Roach – Last Resort Another nu-metal classic, does music actually speak to youth anymore, well i guess grime does. Nu-metal helped the disenfranchised, the forgotten, the lonely , the misfits where do they go now?? This reached #3 in 2000. www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0lSpNtjPM8 162 Kaiser Chiefs – I Predict A Riot They have one more song to come, this was their debut single and reached #9 in 2005 on re-issue. www.youtube.com/watch?v=hamKl-su8PE 161 Iglu & Hartly – In This City Now I haven't heard this song for years, I loved it so much at the time. It was one of those songs that you just willed into being a hit and somehow it was it reached #5 in 2008. I see NME described it as a 'Joyful pop song' so fitting

End of 2006 was a big turning point for me - up to that point I bought everything on CD, after that point I downloaded.
The same point saw a change in chart-rules that a song could chart in the UK without a physical release.
So "Ruby" was just after that point and "Welcome To The Black Parade" was just before. In fact when "Grace Kelly", "Ruby" and "Shine" were the first 3 UK #1s of 2007 I thought the switch was going well, with "Same Jeans" also getting to #3 in that period.
By the way "No Tomorrow" by Orson was the lowest selling #1 ever on its particular week, it reached #1 with sales of about 17,500 I think.

160 The Last Shadow Puppets – The Age Of The Understatement Almost as good as the very best of Arctic Monkeys is this 60s throwback collaboration of alex Turner & Miles Kane. This single reached #9 in 2008. www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGV8xCkpXjE159 Band of Horses – Is There A Ghost Very nearly my Halloween vision entry. This was the 1st single taken from their 2nd album 'Cease To Begin'. It was only a hit in Denmark sadly. 158 The Automatic – Monster And now a song that is on everybody's Halloween playlist. I believe just about every indie rock band thought they could write a pop hit in this era, woudl love those days to return. This reached #4 in 2007. www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7X3LYGV_N8 157 Justice Vs Simian – We Are Your Friends - Radio Edit I know Neil is not a fan of this but Simian made a decision that their quirky indie pop was not the direction they wont to go in and and soon became Simian Mobile Disco at the same time they gave their radio hit to french band Justice to remix and they created a electro dance club classic. It reached #20 in 2006 www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0TvnWRSyr4 156 Cake – Short Skirt/Long Jacket First single from their album 'Comfort Eagle' most famous for being the theme to Chuck, it reached #63 in 2001.

155 The Von Bondies – C'mon C'mon Another track that was used as a TV theme this time fire station drama 'Rescue Me'. By far the best thing they did its another garage rock revival track, it reached #21 in 2004. www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFGo5cqcxP4 154 Ash – Shining Light The best Ash single of the 00s. It only reached #39 in 2001. www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Nt2-pOs_-g 153 La Roux – In For The Kill More electro in fact quite a bit in this section. this reached #2 in 2009 www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXtATeQ7GKg 152 Hot Chip – Over And Over And now the boys do it/ This was Hot Chips breakthrough hit , it went top 40 twice in 2006 peaking at 27 151 Friendly Fires – Skeleton Boy This band have two more songs to come and for me , they were the biggest underachievers of the 00s, yes the two songs that are yet to come are regarded as classics in certain circles but they should have been getting top 20 hits!! This reached #48 in 2009. www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyA8zfouG4Y

150 Kaiser Chiefs – Modern Way When I compiled this list a few years ago, this was my favourite Kaiser Chiefs song, now I am not so sure I think I loved it as it was their most Blur like song. This reached #11 in 2005. www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnxNJbWCcng 149 The Big Pink – Dominos Another indie rock band who wrote one massive pop song. Totally unheard of for a 4AD band at the time since then it has become much more common. It reached #27 in 2009 and maybe was a couple of years late to the party. www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGnNlQ-KNv4148 The Hold Steady – Chips Ahoy Now a band that were tipped for stardom by Pitchfork but somehow their hipster endorsed pub rock didn't cross over as expected, which probably pleased Pitchfork even more. This was their biggest radio song. 147 Biffy Clyro – Joy.Discovery.Invention A self imposed limit on Biffy Clyro otherwise they would have had 30 songs in this list. they have 6 more to come and this highlight of their debut album is a million miles from where they are now, just atmospheric post-rock with a hint of early Sub Pop grunge. this reached #86 in 2002. www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQV78OMWsNQ 146 Middle Class Rut – New Low By the time the video was made for this song, rock was a pariah in the charts like it is now. MCR were so ready with this Queens of The Stone Age meets Janes Addiction rock anthem, it should have been massive, just the wrong time for them. Originally released in 2008, we will have the major label re-issue from 2010

145 The Fray – How To Save A Life Before the US fully embraced our Coldplay they found their own called The Fray. This is their biggest worldwide hit and still does really well with streaming. This reached #4 in the UK and #3 in the US. www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjVQ36NhbMk144 Incubus – Are You In?
As far as I know this was Incubus's first straight pop song mixing jazz and swing and other styles. I still loved it even though it didnt have the big guitars of most of their songs. It reached #34 in 2002.
143 Feeder – Buck Rogers This was their first single from the 'Echo Park' album and reached #5 www.youtube.com/watch?v=COy_JKXtzvE142 The Dears – Lost In The Plot The brilliant 2nd single from the Dears, they never surpassed this or made an album as good. It is so like Morrissey you cant believe it though. www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0zRxxBKZ1A141 Andrew W.K. – Party Hard Fresh from its success in Rock Idol, just one of the absolute best rock songs of the 00s. Nobody else rocks like this.

140 Bloc Party – Helicopter
Think they have only one more to come. This reached #'26 in 2004. www.youtube.com/watch?v=2R6S5CJWlco139 Lambchop – Up With People
Now one of those rare songs that wasn't a hit in my chart but I discovered and grew to love overtime. I think it was Mark & Lard who introduced me to it. It is a low-fi beauty. It is taken from the album 'Nixon' which is regarded as a classic. 138 The Gaslight Anthem – Old White Lincoln
In 2008 this one one of my favourite albums. I really believed they were going to be huge, again wrong time wrong band as War On Drugs have kinda taken the position I thought they would have. Not a hit single but album went top 100 in Uk & US. www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_bQiIZXC9I137 Gossip – Standing In The Way of Control
This still gets played on the radio a lot. It reached #7 in 2004. www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIOmX14M054136 The Futureheads – Hounds of Love
You never hear this anymore though, i absolutely loved it at the time. It reached #8 in 2005. www.dailymotion.com/video/xzdl8

135 Bloc Party – So Here We Are
Ok I missed this one. Brilliant ballad taken from their debut album 'Silent Alarm'. It reached #5 in 2005. www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzZQJZdcCU4134 Maps – You Don't Know Her Name More electronic noodling this time from the very underrated Maps. 2nd single taken from his 2nd album 'To The Sky' www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvqRxg4ebKA 133 Sigur Rós – Hoppípolla Well everybody knows this one. The Icelandic super hit helped in a big way by David Attenborough. It peaked #24 in 2006 but i am guessing it has sold a lot more than that position would indicate. www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZTb8WxEW78 132 The Crimea – Baby Boom Another 00s band that are pretty much forgotten. This was a big radio hit but didnt chart. 131 Bedouin Soundclash – When The Night Feels My Song
Cant get an official video for this anywhere. This was the best reggae song of the 00s. If you have never heard it please check it out. It reached #24 in 2005. I honestly cant believe the video is blocked everywhere. www.youtube.com/watch?v=8eJaiqOxG-Q
