Well it didn't look like they were going to make it at one point but Tears For Fears have managed a 4th on top of our chart. I think they may find it difficult to hold on next week though. Eddy Grant stays at 2 but increases points this week and is only 8 behind, Abba climb a place also and could also be a threat to Tears For Fears next week. The highest new entry is a track I love a lot from Darryl Hall & John Oates, 'Maneater' munches it's way in at 7. It's a busy week for new tracks with other notable entrants including Blancmange, Men At Work & Marvin Gaye among others.

___________________________
Still nobody has guessed who will knock Tears For Fears off #1.
John Cougar didn't use the "Mellencamp" name on his only UK top 40 hit. "Ooh, life goes on, long after the thrill of living is gone.." Just a classic bit of rock and I don't know why it didn't do better in the UK chart.
Caroline is actually one of my favourite Status Quo songs, and when I did an "old" chart from its original year and did them in "my" order, it landed at #2 in late 1973. The Carpenters "Top Of The World" kept it off #1.
Supertramp's biggest year in the NM chart was 1979. Their final hit would be the one in the chart now.
Marvin Gaye's "Got To Give It Up" didn't reach my chart in 1977 and "Sexual Healing" was his only NM hit during his lifetime. Posthumously a re-issue of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" would also chart for him in 1986. I was actually mildly surprised they played Sexual Healing on the radio. I think it was his "legendary" status that got him played. Similarly James Brown's "Sex Machine" got played. Salt N Pepa only suggested talking about sex, not doing it. George Michael's "I Want Your Sex" though was banned... His debut is just around the corner.. did I say I'll post 2 charts this week... maybe Young Guns will knock Mad World off the top?

1 :: A Flock Of Seagulls - WISHING (IF I HAD A PHOTOGRAPH OF YOU) 2 :: Blancmange - LIVING ON THE CEILING 3 :: Ultravox - REAP THE WILD WIND 4 :: Simple Minds - GLITTERING PRIZE 5 :: Squeeze - ANNIE GET YOUR GUN 6 :: Marvin Gaye - (SEXUAL) HEALING 7 :: Wham! - YOUNG GUNS (GO FOR IT) 8 :: Daryl Hall And John Oates - MANEATER 9 :: Beatles - LOVE ME DO 10 :: Spandau Ballet - LIFELINE 11 :: Eddy Grant - I DON'T WANNA DANCE 12 :: Culture Club - DO YOU REALLY WANT TO HURT ME 13 :: Abba - THE DAY BEFORE YOU CAME 14 :: Shalamar - THERE IT IS 15 :: Pretenders - BACK ON THE CHAIN GANG 16 :: Tears For Fears - MAD WORLD 17 :: Heaven 17 - LET ME GO 18 :: Kevin Rowland And Dexy's Midnight Runners - JACKIE WILSON SAID 19 :: Status Quo - CAROLINE (LIVE AT THE NEC) 20 :: Chris De Burgh - DON'T PAY THE FERRYMAN
By starting in 1982, we've missed the very best of the original synth pop hits. But there were still exciting new sounds emerging, as demonstrated by the Blancmange and AFOS tracks at the top of my chart.

I wonder if Tears For Fears can hang on this week?? They seem to be slipping on some posters charts. Earl Purple, I think Eddy Grant or Dionne Warwick will knock them off number 1 in your chart.

Man, that Dionne Warwick track is SO dull, hated it at the time, and still do! Bit of a guilty pleasure of mine and again one of those where I think had I been around then and older I wouldn't have liked. Used to be on a compilation my Mum played a lot when I was a kid which is why I think I like it.

Not a fan of John Cougar shireb? Yes, I'm quite partial to some JCM. But the competition is so strong, he has only managed to land in the unpublished #21-30 section of my chart for the past couple of weeks. My JCM top 6:- 1. Paper In Fire 2. Hurts So Good 3. Small Town 4. Jack & Diane 5. Cherry Bomb 6. Pink Houses

To remind some of you I've posted to my ears the superior, yet less successful 1982 version of the re-recorded 1987 blockbuster hit by David Coverdale's rock band. I guess it lacks actress/model Tawny Kitaen's appearance wearing white lingerie in the video whilst prancing on the hood of a Jaguar XJ. Kitaen would later become Coverdale's wife!

____________________________________________________________
Earler in the year I may have thrown out a comment when I charted Donna Summer's "Finger On The Trigger", something in the nature of having no idea at the time what was coming... Well no, I wasn't expecting this. It was obvious to me when I heard it that it was a Jon & Vangelis song, because it sounded like one.
The Donna Summer version was produced by Quincy Jones and had an all-star line-up of backing vocalists, including Dionne Warwick who was of course also in the chart, and Michael Jackson who is invisible in the chart above, and features Eric Clapton on guitar too.
With that spectacular entry, we have lower down the debuts of Blancmange who later would cover one of the other entries on this chart, and of course Wham! whose line-up at this point included Dee C Lee.
Abba's "The Day Before You Came" disappointed in the UK chart. Did it really only peak at #32? It finally gets in, and Daryl Hall & John Oates complete the list of new entries this week with "Maneater".
