6 new entries is a lot perhaps so close to Christmas, and I didn't even chart Shaky's "Blue Christmas" this week. Maybe Christmas week itself will see that sneak in.

David Essex has performed in theatre including Tim Rice musicals, and now records a song whose lyrics were written by Tim Rice, and I remember defending these lyrics a few months back when the song came up in Gezza's topic. The music for the song was composed by Mike Batt, famous for the Wombles and also composer of Bright Eyes from Watership Down, and producing Steeleye Span's "All Around My Hat", that version sometimes nicknamed "All Around Mike Batt".

Phil Collins was last in the chart with Genesis (Paperlate) and switches between band and solo projects. He hits us rather surprisingly with a cover of a Motown song written by Holland Dozier Holland and first recorded by the Supremes. This battle with A Winters Tale begs whether it is better to have loved and lost (as in A Winters Tale) or never to have loved at all (as in You Can't Hurry Love).

This week seems Malcolm McLaren's introduction to scratching get in the chart, together with Abba's last proper new release, another Eurovision winner who were still going and following up a fantastic #1, and Kid Creole finishing a huge year for him by switching from Annie to Addy. This song is rather slow-paced and not so appealing but he'll be back with another wonderful smash in 1983 before signing off from my chart.
