Haven Combi Chart WB: 19/12/1982 - Post Your Next Chart Here

[PLAYER]

David Essex shoots to the top of our combi chart for Christmas week with his seasonal offering and The Waitresses Christmas classic remains at number two this week. David Bowie is also a major beneficiary of the yuletide period and leaps nine places to complete a Christmas top three. The Human League suffer in all the madness and fall three places to four after two weeks at number one. There are other new Christmas tracks making appearances lower down that were of course released prior to 1982 and re-charting in the main chart also. The highest new track not Christmas related is at twenty for Wah who are bound to do well in our chart in the coming weeks as we go into 1983!

David Essex gets to #1 in a hit that is seasonal being winter but not Christmas as such. In the UK chart this song is also quickly gaining ground, climbing to #3 then #2 behind the song it's keeping out here. As I mentioned previously, the battle was between whether it was better to have loved and lost or never loved at all. At the time I had never loved at all but had had my heart broken many times.

This would be the final year in David Essex's career and his only number one but that would have been 2 had I done charts in 1975 as "Hold Me Close" would almost certainly have also been a #1. He will have yet one more hit. His first actual chart entry in the NM chart was "Cool Out Tonight" in 1977 and he'd had a hit with a song co-written by Tim Rice before with "Oh What A Circus" which in my chart was a far bigger hit than "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" that had the same melody. Other hits were "Silver Dream Machine" and "Me & My Girl Nightclubbing" the latter peaking at #6 as we saw last year (well earlier in this year but last year regards these charts as we are in 1983 now). All in all he had a decent run of hits.

Wah! crashed in at #3 on this week completing what lyrically is a very miserable top 3 regarding love, perhaps describing my love life at the time too. That song would lose the battle with Men At Work in the UK chart as they are about to both make huge climbs but then Wah! runs out of steam quicker. I'm hoping it will prove the more successful on the Haven chart.

I am quite surprised about the general love for "A Winter's Tale".

For me, around February-March 1982 was potentially one of the best ever periods for music. You will note that my chart of the year contains a lot of songs (ok near the lower end) from that period. Maybe slightly disappointing we didn't cover it in our weekly charts but looking forward to see what happens in 1983, a year which, for me, is not as strong as 1982 but has its moments.

Several of the UK #1s peake at #2 in my chart and there were a few the other way around. Surprisingly though "Come On Eileen" was the only single to be #1 in both the UK and NM chart in 1982. My next favourite UK #1 was "A Town Called Malice" but that peaked only at NM #2.

Think most people liked to have a classic Xmas song at number one, seems you either go for David Essex or Waitresses. Other than you we all have the benefit or not of hearing these songs every year for the last thirty years before making our charts.

Interesting you think it would be one of those two, Waitresses was out that year but wasn't a UK top 40 hit at the time and seemed to pick up more of a following when played in later years.

Shaky was the biggest Christmas hit in the chart at the time but I always think of Bowie/Crosby as the more obvious one, with Cliff Richard next, perhaps because of how they did in my chart at the time.

I never really considered David Essex a Christmas song, albeit it's winter based and of course it peaked in the two weeks after Christmas, #3 on 8th January and #2 on 15th January in the UK chart having been #7 on the "frozen" Christmas song.

Incidentally, unlike the previous year, there was no snow around Christmas this year in London. I think we got a bit in early February.

Exactly I didn't really know Waitresses until I heard 'Best xmas album in the world ever' about fifteen years ago then it became my favourite
