A very static chart this week as expected as most posters charts remained the same as did the official chart in this week of the year for many years. As a result of this David Essex easily holds onto number one with the Waitresses holding onto two quite easily also. There are a couple of significant climbs, Wah as expected leap seventeen places to number three and the other noticeable climb comes from Dionne Warwick who goes up eight places to number fifteen.

All quiet before the 1983 new entries .... (Seeing as Paul Gambaccini is back on Saturday night Radio 2 with his weekly look at the charts Stateside) looking at the comparable US Billboard single chart there are a handful of good songs that never troubled the UK charts including this (on its way up to its USA #17 peak) blue collar meets John Lennon social commentary from USA's answer to Elton John. Destined for just a single week on my chart, at #1, is Runrig's "Loch Lomond", which spent this week bubbling under in 1983. It was 25 years before the song finally charted, in the form of a live recording with the Tartan Army.

I need to dig out my chart of 1983 now for this week. As usual one week ahead so my highest entry this week is a song that spent just one week in the UK top 75, at #74, on the UK chart dated 15 January 1983. It is a total classic though. Can't believe it charted so low.

3rd week in a row then that has a new #1, Wah! who is mainly Pete Wylie from Liverpool moves to the top after a new entry at #3. Although in this chart we saw the Waitresses do the same, at the time Wah! were the first act ever to have entered the chart so high as a new artist. (The first ever chart doesn't count). In 32 years since, there have been a couple of others (collaborations also don't count). Cornershop hold the record of the only artist to debut at NM #1 with "Brimful Of Asha" on 21 February 1998. On Christmas week 2012, Mr B The Gentleman Rhymer came close to following suit but ended up only debutting at #2 with "Oh Santa". He never made it to #1.

Back to 1983 and whilst my chart began on the first week of 1977, the year 1976 had its "would have been" number ones. I guess others who made a chart had "favourite song in the chart" before they actually compiled one. In 1976 my favourite song in the chart was "Music" by John Miles, an epic track produced by Alan Parsons and perhaps what I knew him for, although he had been on TOTP with the Alan Parsons Project. The vocalist on "Old & Wise" was Colin Blunstone, of the Zombies who had also had some solo hits. "Say You Don't Mind" springs to mind as one of them. This is another "epic" song and was played a fair bit on the radio. I also bought it. For whatever reason though, not many others did and it only peaked at #74 in the UK chart.

Joe Jackson returns. He had a big NM hit with "Is She Really Going Out With Him" in 1979, then "It's Different For Girls" was also a hit in 1980.

The song "Gloria" has been recorded by a few people, even Jonathan King... He mentions it on a show at some point. It enters the chart for Laura Branigan. Fleetwood Mac's song "Oh Diane" enters, Lynsey Buckingham doing lead vocals on it. Appropriate for a male singer so Stevie Nicks takes a back-seat this time. Billy Griffin enters and has been introduced as the person who replaced Smokey Robinson in The Miracles. If they were really a proper group (I never really considered the act name that went with a solo artist to be a proper group) but they did have that hit "Love Machine" in 1976.

The year 1976 will actually play a prominent role for me within 1983. It's one of the years covered in Jimmy Savile's Old Record Club this year. Every 3rd year from 1961 onward, even 1982 but I'm really not that interested in 1982 or 1979 but the earlier ones. Getting to know the music from the earlier years is something I felt I needed to do and shortly within this year will be recording Jimmy Savile's Old Record Club and listening to these a few times to familiarise myself with 60s music and some of the early 70s stuff I didn't know that well (e.g. 1973 I knew a few but there are loads of others I didn't know at the time).

I need to dig out my chart of 1983 now for this week. As usual one week ahead so my highest entry this week is a song that spent just one week in the UK top 75, at #74, on the UK chart dated 15 January 1983. It is a total classic though. Can't believe it charted so low.

The only reason i included Shireblogger's year end chart is because he didn't post a normal one, whilst you posted a year end chart I counted your normal chart, I wasn't giving anyone preferential treatment
