Sad for Syria, but they did outstandingly well to get this far. In an expanded world cup... Indeed. Under the 2026 format, they'd have been in, along with Uzbekistan and the UAE.

A record which will be maintained in 2022, barring any change in that year's host nation.

Portugal now 2-0 up.
Greece leading Gibraltar 3-0 so Slovakia will be the runners-up who miss out on the playoffs.

France get the win they needed to secure a 15th World Cup appearance. Arjen Robben scored twice on what might be his final international appearance but the Dutch fall five goals short of the seven they needed to leapfrog Sweden. Luxembourg's draw with Bulgaria means they avoid finishing bottom of the group.

Lionel Messi is Argentina's hero as his hat-trick helps them overcome Ecuador, having conceded a first-minute goal in Quito. Uruguay join them, as do Colombia, who drew in Peru. Peru's late equaliser was enough for them to set up a playoff against New Zealand. Chile miss out after losing 3-0 in Brazil - the 3rd World Cup in a row in which Brazil have knocked out Chile.

A night of drama and controversy in CONCACAF's "Hex" as Panama qualify for the World Cup for the first time though it will be interesting to see what FIFA have to say (if anything) about their equaliser which clearly did not cross the line. With all the talk of Argentina possibly failing to qualify, no-one had really entertained the possibility of the USA missing out but their defeat in Trinidad means they fail to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1986. Honduras come from behind to beat Mexico and grab 4th place, setting up a playoff against Australia.

Argentina being written off is highly premature. My money is on them finishing 3rd in the group. Should have actually gone down to the bookies this time, rather than just pretending in my head.

On the matter of Panama's equaliser, surely there is nothing FIFA can do unless there is clear evidence of the officials being bribed. They can only consider what to do for future tournaments, e.g. more widespread use of goal-line technology.

But if FIFA over-ruled the goal, then USA would qualify for the play-off and Panama would be eliminated. Never underestimate the power of an American lawsuit to change the mind of one of the world's most corrupt least competent organisations.

Chile miss out after losing 3-0 in Brazil - the 3rd World Cup in a row in which Brazil have knocked out Chile. This adds insult to injury - Alexis Sanchez gets a summer off for the first time in about 5 years, and we're losing him on a free to C*ty!

So Panama qualify for the World Cup by acquiring 13 points from a possible 30? And the team below enter a play off with NZ, bizarre!

But you have to bear in mind those were the six best teams in the CONCACAF section. If there'd been three groups of six in the final stage, Panama's tally would've been significantly higher.

Never underestimate the power of an American lawsuit to change the mind of one of the world's most corrupt least competent organisations. If FIFA overrule a goal scored early in the second half and change the result, they would lose what little credibility they have left. I would hope it would lead to a mass walkout by other countries or (probably more important in FIFA's eyes) a refusal by television companies to pay for broadcasting wights.
