Quite an easy second week at the top for Yazoo this week, although The Police did climb a place to keep them on their toes this week. The Police seemed to occupy the number four position in many posters charts this week but end up overall at two. It's another strong week for Mike Oldfield who climbs a place to three, his highest position yet. Irene Cara can feel good after getting our highest new entry at four this week with Flash & The Pan climbing three places to five and completing the Top five. Last week Heaven 17 suffered a big drop and this week The Human League suffer a similar fate, leaving the Top three and slipping to ten quite suddenly.

Mike Oldfield is about to enter the top 40 soon. I don't know who else might be basing their chart on the top 40 though. I am using what I charted at the time, possibly adding something I missed back then but if I did chart it later (when it entered the top 40) I am not bothering to pull it into my chart earlier (as with Elton John too).
I notice Billy Fury in your top 75 with a cover of a song Bobby Rydell had a UK chart hit with in 1963. I haven't reached 1963 in my retro chart yet but both those singers have had #1s in my chart during 1960-61, Bobby Rydell with "Wild One" and Billy Fury with "Halfway To Paradise".

Mine is based on the top 100 and adding US hits that didn't chart here sometimes, it is a brand new chart but influenced by what I liked at the time as well although maybe not with many novelty hits.

Hands up who else can remember "Whistle Test" showing the video for "China Girl" during its regular show, and then staying up late to see the X-rated version of the same video later that evening, only to discover it was pretty mild after all ?

Rod Stewart climbs to #3 this week. If he can knock Elton John off the top we'll have had those two and David Bowie (earlier on with Let's Dance) all top the NM chart in 1983.
Mike Oldfield was also a big solo artist in the 1970s, with his big selling album "Tubular Bells". The song "Moonlight Shadow" is about John Lennon's death and features Maggie Riley on vocals. Technically she was not credited on the single but they often used to introduce it as "Mike Oldfield & Maggie Riley" at the time and we all knew the name of the singer (perhaps a bit like we knew it was Seal singing on "Killer" in 1990).
I posted a link to the US Billboard Chart this week and you will see that Styx were #14 there and enter at the same position here. They sing "Don't Let It End" but it will. This will be their last ever entry in the NM chart in a career that saw them have 3 number one singles and "Paradise Theatre" is one of my favourite albums of all time, and the #1 of 1981. That album was also a UK top 10 album but their only UK top 40 single ever was "Babe" (which was on the Cornerstone album).
Elvis Costello wrote the song immediately below him in the chart above. Having not had any hits for a while he used a pseudonym for "Pills And Soap" and got to the top 20 for the first time for ages and it would be another 16 years until he managed that again (although he had top 10 albums in between).
George Benson's disco song finally charts too.

Mine's based on the top 40

Much better week for new entries coming up, my highest new entry is from a song I haven't heard in 32 years didn't even have it on my PC or even on Spotify!!

The Truth aren't on Spotify, I know from when I tried to add that song and also A Step In The Right Direction onto my old playlists. Strangely the latter was the bigger hit in my chart.
