This is as we all know was the time the chart changed from Tuesday Reveal to Sunday Reveal.

It was a big change that date as Radio 1 actually went onto FM full time in certain areas (like London).
It was close to the 20th anniversary of the start of Radio 1 which was 30th September 1967.
My chart skipped a week thus I had no NM chart corresponding to the UK chart of 3rd October. Essentially that means that the Pet Shop Boys & Dusty Springfield had 3 weeks at #1 that would have been 4.

Here's an aircheck of Bros turning one of the transmitters on.

They dropped Jimmy Savile's Old Record Club in favour of an oldies show by Mike Read.
Whatever you think of Jimmy Savile, the format of his show was so much better as it played whatever was in the top 10 on the specific week and some songs outside. And it was a series, so over a period they played all the major hits.
Mike Read's was a "selective" oldies show which, as you can guess, means it was the "producer's choice". You can guess that means the same old songs were played whilst others got totally overlooked.

The final Jimmy Savile ORC played the top 12 singles from each of those years listed above. I have the recording and Jimmy signed off simply saying "See ya"

The top 12 singles on 26 September 1971 were:
1. Tams - Hey Girl Don't Bother Me 2. Rod Stewart - Maggie May / Reason To Believe 3. Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood - Did You Ever 4. Middle Of The Road - Tweedle Dee, Tweedle Dum 5. CCS - Tap Turns On The Water 6. Marmalade - Cousin Norman 7. Supremes - Nathan Jones 8. James Taylor - You've Got A Friend 9. Hot Chocolate - I Believe (In Love) 10. Shirley Bassey - For All We Know 11. Curved Air - Back Street Luv 12. Jethro Tull - Life Is A Love Song / Up The Pool
Many of those you will never hear played on regular "oldie" channels, they simply don't get picked by the selectors. That is what I liked about the Old Record Club format.
Of course nowadays with Spotify and Youtube we can make our own "playlists" and put on them whatever we want e.g. all that top 12, but back in 1987 that option didn't exist and we relied on radio to know how these songs sounded. (Buying them wasn't an option either, they'd have been deleted or a select number would appear on compilations).

And I guess for a radio programmer it can be dilemma whether to play only the "best" songs or all of them. But I'm someone who wants to know all of them.
For example, if I were growing up now and there was no internet or anything and I relied on radio, and I went back to February 1981 and radio stations often played "Vienna" but never played "Shaddup You Face" because of how awful it is, I would never know how bad that song was that kept Ultravox off #1 because I'd have no idea how it sounds. Of course I was around at the time so I know how bad it is but it's something I feel I'd want to know, and the only way I'd have found out was a radio station playing it for me.
Other less obvious cases though may be songs I like that radio stations don't think are a good choice for their station.
