Another clear victory for Mike Oldfield this week as he spends a third week at number one on our chart. Bucks Fizz continue to reminisce and climb a place to two, swapping places with Irene Cara who's probably not feeling quite so good. Paul Young hasn't yet finalised where he's laying his hat and continues to move two places to the number four position.

A lack of action towards the top end but a lot of new songs entering each week and more knocking on the door. The chart could easily have been bigger and I have considered expanding it to squeeze in some good songs I didn't chart at the time. Some also have to be patient to get in.

Of those that do, the Lotus Eaters get the highest entry, Elvis Costello replaces himself, this time using his normal name (not his real name which is Declan McManus), an early song of the newer R&B style which given the hot weather felt like a chill-out song at the time, and just to keep you awake, some rock n roll by Roman Holiday. This latter song one of the "energetic" pop songs with Matt Bianco's "Get Out Of Your Lazy Bed" coming within the next year and Wham's "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go". I always felt a similarity between these 3. Roman Holiday themselves though would have one more minor top 40 hit then disappear. (I think Motor Mania did scrape the top 40..)

The Undertones released thirteen singles and four studio albums between 1978 and 1983 before Sharkey announced his intention to leave the band in May 1983, citing musical differences as the reason for the break up.

It will be interesting to see which of this week's 4 Top 40 new entries will do best at Haven over the coming weeks. I suspect Bananarama will outscore the Eurythmics, although it is an easy win for the Cure for me.

My chart didn't always enter them the same week and I am one week ahead. Eurythmics got in first week for me, Elvis Costello this one and the other two still waiting.

The song that is in the chart called Forbidden Colours was a vocal version of the theme from "Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence", about prisoners of war in Japan during World War II (and the evil way in which they were treated). Two of the three main characters were played by musicians. Ryuichi Sakamoto himself played the head of the prison, and David Bowie, always keen to act, played one of the prisoners. I did go to watch it at some point during that summer. (Tom Conti played the other main character of one of the prisoners).
