79. Guns N' Roses – Don't Cry www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRIbf6JqkNc"Don't Cry" is a power ballad by the hard rock band Guns N' Roses, two versions of which were released simultaneously on different albums. The version with the original lyrics is the fourth track on Use Your Illusion I, while the version with the alternate lyrics is the 13th track on Use Your Illusion II. Only the vocal tracks differ, and even then only in the verses; however, in those verses, not only are the words entirely different, but the meter and melody are also slightly different. There is also a third version, officially released only on the single for the song, which was recorded during Appetite for Destruction sessions in 1986. The song reached the top 10 in many countries, including number 8 in the UK Singles Chart

77. Nirvana – The Man Who Sold The World www.youtube.com/watch?v=fregObNcHC8The band dedicated two days to rehearsals before recording this. The rehearsal sessions were tense and difficult, with the band running into problems performing various songs for the Unplugged performance. During the sessions, Cobain disagreed with MTV as to how the performance should be presented because the network was unhappy with the band's choice of the Meat Puppets as guests ("They wanted to hear the 'right' names-Eddie Vedder or Tori Amos or God knows who") and the lack of hit Nirvana songs on the setlist. Upset at being pressured to change their setlist and the day before filming was set to take place Cobain refused to play. However, he appeared at the studio the following afternoon. Cobain was suffering from drug withdrawal and nervousness at the time but got his wish to play the songs he wanted to play so Cobain suggested that the stage be decorated with stargazer lilies, black candles, and a crystal chandelier. Cobain's request prompted the show's producer to ask him, "You mean like a funeral?", to which the singer replied, "Exactly. Like a funeral and Unlike many artists who appeared on the show, Nirvana filmed its entire performance in a single take and the gem for me was the Bowie cover "The Man Who Sold The World"

However, after the massive success of "Don't Speak" the song was re-released and managed a peak of number 3. Just how Gwen Stefani got from here to the awful Hollaback Girl I will never know

Meat Loaf – I'd Lie For You (And That's the Truth) www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbdpXx-PHuMI know Haven isn't the biggest fans of Meat Loaf, he probably falls in the gap between not poppy enough and not serious enough but he is a guilty pleasure of mine for sure. "I'd Lie for You (And That's the Truth)" is a song composed and written by Diane Warren, and recorded by Meat Loaf and Patti Russo. The song was released in 1995 as the first single from the album Welcome to the Neighbourhood. The single release reached No. 2 in the United Kingdom

It features Jacqui Abbott on lead vocals and reached number five on the UK Singles Chart, where it stayed for nine weeks. The title likely derives from the fact that the words "muscle" and "museum" come immediately before and after the word "muse" in most dictionaries

72. Nada Surf – Popular www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNc45FTenhg
The whole song, except for the chorus, are parts made up from the 1964 teen advice book Penny's Guide to Teen-Age Charm and Popularity, written by television actress Gloria Winters. The excerpts are spoken in a sarcastic tone by Matthew Caws. Quintessential 90's indie from one of my favorite bands although ironically it only reached #123 in the UK so it wasn't too popular until MTV2 picked it up years later

When the song came out initially, some feminist groups were outraged and claimed the song was about abusing women, until frontman Rob Thomas explained that the man in the song (either himself or fictional) was the one being abused, either emotionally or physically, by a woman. Thomas expressed surprise when he heard that the song was being misinterpreted as misogynistic

63. The Boo Radleys – Wake up Boo! www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJXPTnPmm78"Wake Up Boo!" is a song recorded by British indie band The Boo Radleys for their fourth album, Wake Up!. It was by far their biggest hit both in the UK and internationally. The track is an upbeat guitar-pop song about the change from summer to autumn, contrasting the narrator's optimism ("Wake up, it's a beautiful morning") with his companion's pessimism ("You have to put the death in everything"). Interesting fact: Their name is taken from the character Boo Radley in Harper Lee's 1960 novel, To Kill a Mockingbird
