-- ( -- ) Revival - Chris Barber -- ( -- ) If You Gotta Make a Fool Of Somebody - James Ray
Being the new year does not stop the year opening with 6 new entries plus 2 others that didn't get in. Acker Bilk does hold the king at bay for at least one more week to achieve the joint longest #1 in this chart so far.
Among those entering we have the classic Dion hit which was covered by Status Quo in 1984. John D Loudermilk was probably previously best known for having composed that hit "Angela Jones" that was a hit in 1960 (different hit versions in the UK and USA but neither of them his).

13 January 1962:
1 ( 2 ) Rock-A-Hula Baby - Elvis Presley <4th #1> 2 ( 1 ) Stranger On The Shore - Mr Acker Bilk (#1[6]) 3 ( 3 ) Multiplication - Bobby Darin 4 ( 7 ) The Wanderer - Dion 5 ( 11 ) The Language Of Love - John D Loudermilk 6 ( -- ) The Young Ones - Cliff Richard 7 ( 8 ) Son This Is She - John Leyton 8 ( 5 ) Can't Help Falling In Love - Elvis Presley (#5) 9 ( 4 ) Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen - Neil Sedaka (#2[4]) 10 ( 6 ) Johnny Will - Pat Boone (#3)
11 ( 14 ) I Know (You Don't Love Me No More) - Barbara George 12 ( 10 ) Image - Hank Levine (#10) 13 ( 19 ) Can't You Hear The Beat Of A Broken Heart - Iain Gregory 14 ( -- ) Baby It's You - Shirelles 15 ( 20 ) Town Without Pity - Gene Pitney 16 ( 9 ) I'd Never Find Another You - Billy Fury (#7) 17 ( 13 ) Revenge - Brook Benton (#13) 18 ( 15 ) Well I Told You - Chantels (#15) 19 ( -- ) Jambalaya (On The Bayou) - Fats Domino 20 ( 12 ) Walk On By - Leroy Van Dyke (#5)
21 ( 26 ) Come Along Please - Bob Wallis & His Storeyville Jazzmen 22 ( 27 ) A Little Bitty Tear - Burl Ives 23 ( -- ) What A Crazy World We're Living In - Joe Brown 24 ( 16 ) Don't Bring Lulu - Dorothy Provine (#6) 25 ( 18 ) Unchain My Heart - Ray Charles (#10) 26 ( 17 ) Crazy - Patsy Cline (#1[2]) 27 ( 25 ) I Cried For You - Ricky Stevens (#24) 28 ( -- ) Norman - Sue Thompson 29 ( 23 ) Peppermint Twist Part 1 - Joey Dee & The Starliters (#18) 30 ( 28 ) Til - Angels (#27)
-- ( 21 ) Baby's First Christmas - Connie Francis (#13) -- ( 22 ) The Lion Sleeps Tonight - Tokens (#8) -- ( 24 ) Charleston - Temperance Seven (#13) -- ( 29 ) In The Middle Of A Heartache - Wanda Jackson (#18) -- ( 30 ) I Wanna Thank You - Bobby Rydell (#7)
-- ( -- ) Cotton Fields - Highwaymen -- ( -- ) Twist Twist - Chakachas -- ( -- ) Small Sad Sam - Phil McLean -- ( -- ) Funny How Time Slips Away - Jimmy Elledge
How long will this continue? Elvis Presley gets a 4th number one. This is more than any other artist so far but he is at a disadvantage to a certain band who will appear at the end of this year in that a lot of his best songs were in the 1950s.
Someone who has hits over many years is Cliff Richard. He gets the highest entry in a high position so looks set to have his biggest hit single to date, and could potentially get to #1. 5 new entries and 4 that didn't make it (two of them removed very quickly from the playlist).
Of those that didn't chart, Chakachas' hit is among one of many "Twist" related songs. They themselves will re-emerge in a decade as a disco act with "Jungle Fever". Phil McLean's "Small Sad Sam" is a parody of "Big Bad John".

20 January 1962:
1 ( 1 ) Rock-A-Hula Baby - Elvis Presley <2nd week at #1 > 2 ( 6 ) The Young Ones - Cliff Richard 3 ( 4 ) The Wanderer - Dion 4 ( 5 ) The Language Of Love - John D Loudermilk 5 ( -- ) Crying In The Rain - Everly Brothers 6 ( 3 ) Multiplication - Bobby Darin (#3) 7 ( 2 ) Stranger On The Shore - Mr Acker Bilk (#1[6]) 8 ( 14 ) Baby It's You - Shirelles 9 ( 7 ) Son This Is She - John Leyton (#7) 10 ( -- ) Forget Me Not - Eden Kane

-- ( -- ) Dear Lady Twist - Gary US Bonds -- ( -- ) Jeannie - Danny Williams -- ( -- ) Lonesome - Adam Faith -- ( -- ) Dear Ivan - Jimmy Dean
Elvis holds on and Cliff moves to #2, his highest peak to date and hoping to get the number one. However just below the Everly Brothers, the only artist other than Elvis so far to have had more than one number one (they've had two) threaten to do it again as "Crying In The Rain" enters at #5.
Eden Kane is the only artist to enter the chart this week that hasn't yet had a #1. His UK #1 "Well I Ask You" did quite well, peaking at #4 in June 1961. Brenda Lee, Lonnie Donegan and Bobby Darin all had NM #1s in 1960 (but none of them did in 1961).

-- ( -- ) Twist-Her - Bill Black's Combo -- ( -- ) Do-Re-Mi - Lee Dorsey
History is made. In all those years of doing NM charts since 1977, Cliff Richard never managed a #1. In retro charts, it took him just over 2 years to get one. There may be more to come.
2 of the other entrants were also around in the later period, and both were "disco" at the time. Gene Chandler released a couple of songs "Get Down" and "Does She Have A Friend (For Me)". The latter of those featured on one of my retro TOTP episodes. Gladys Knight & The Pips had a big hit in my chart in 1977 with "Baby Don't Change Your Mind" and Gladys solo had an even bigger hit in 1989 with her Bond theme "Licence To Kill".
Brook Brothers replace Brook Benton in the chart. Brook Benton himself won't be away for long. I really was not that familiar with his music previously. One of the singers I'm getting to know a lot more about.
"Turn On Your Love Light" sounds remarkably similar to "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love" yet a search indicates they had totally different songwriters and I don't know of any lawsuit. I am not sure if it wasn't the Blues Brothers who connected the two (as they appeared to record Turn On Your Love Light too). The original of "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love" is about 3 years away at this point.

3 February 1962:
1 ( 2 ) Crying In The Rain - Everly Brothers < 3rd #1 > 2 ( 1 ) The Young Ones - Cliff Richard (#1[1]) 3 ( 5 ) Forget Me Not - Eden Kane 4 ( 8 ) Duke Of Earl - Gene Chandler 5 ( 3 ) Rock-A-Hula Baby - Elvis Presley (#1[2]) 6 ( 4 ) The Wanderer - Dion (#3) 7 ( 7 ) Baby It's You - Shirelles 8 ( 15 ) Turn On Your Love Light - "Bobby ""Blue"" Bland" 9 ( 9 ) Jambalaya (On The Bayou) - Fats Domino 10 ( 6 ) The Language Of Love - John D Loudermilk (#4)

21 ( 26 ) Letter Full Of Tears - Gladys Knight & The Pips 22 ( -- ) Walk Away - Shane Fenton & The Fentones 23 ( 22 ) Norman - Sue Thompson (#22) 24 ( 30 ) D-Darling - Anthony Newley 25 ( 20 ) Town Without Pity - Gene Pitney (#15) 26 ( 16 ) Stranger On The Shore - Mr Acker Bilk (#1[6]) 27 ( -- ) Don't Stop Twist - Frankie Vaughan 28 ( 23 ) Come Along Please - Bob Wallis & His Storeyville Jazzmen (#20) 29 ( 25 ) A Little Bitty Tear - Burl Ives (#21) 30 ( 24 ) Can't Help Falling In Love - Elvis Presley (#5)

-- ( -- ) She's Everything (I Wanted You To Be) - Ral Donner -- ( -- ) Lonesome No 1 - Don Gibson -- ( -- ) Pianissimo - Ken Dodd
The Everly Brothers replace Cliff Richard at #1. In 1983 Cliff would have a hit duet with Phil Everly. (They also charted together in 1994). In addition when A-Ha covered "Crying In The Rain", Cliff Richard was still having hits in 1990 (and was charting with "From A Distance").
I did mention that only Elvis and the Everly Brothers have had more than one #1 so far but the Shadows had a #1 in 1960 and also performed on Cliff's number one.
Brook Benton's high entry is a bible story about Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego from the 3rd chapter of the book of Daniel. Louis Armstrong has also recorded a version of that song. In a week or so we'll be starting to say Slichot and we mention them and their rescue. (Their Hebrew names were Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, the names above were Babylonian names given to them, whilst Daniel himself was given the name Beltshazar).
That is one of just 3 entries this week. Frankie Vaughan making it in with one of the "twist" songs. There's a big "twist" song coming up in the next month.

-- ( -- ) Smoky Places - Corsairs & Jay Bird Uzzell -- ( -- ) I'm Counting On You - Petula Clark -- ( -- ) Softly As I Leave You - Matt Monro
With a frozen top 4, Bruce Channel's classic "Hey Baby" enters at #5 making a strong challenge to be the next number one. There is also a new entry for Gene McDaniels who beat Frankie Vaughan in the right to chart Tower Of Strength. Frankie Vaughan is currently charting with a different song now.
Ace Cannon is a saxophonist and if it sounds a lot like Bill Black's Combo, that's because they are indeed backing him on this track. Dave Brubeck are another jazz act to be entering, following up their #1 "Take Five".

The Everly Brothers get a 3rd week on top which is now their longest running #1 but recall that "Walk Right Back" was the #3 hit of 1961 in spite of only managing 2 weeks at #1.
Of the 4 new entries it's 3 out of 4 British, the Sensations being the only Americans among the entrants. Bernard Cribbins with a bit of comedy, some more jazz by Kenny Ball (whose Midnight In Moscow is climbing to #2 in the USA) and teen-star Helen Shapiro follows up her #1.

-- ( -- ) Never Goodbye - Karl Denver -- ( -- ) Lesson One Russ Conway -- ( -- ) Don't Break The Heart That Loves You Connie Francis -- ( -- ) What's Your Name Don & Juan
As the Everly Brothers manage a 4th week on top keeping out Bruce Channel for a second week, we have lower down a lot of entries but no particularly high ones.
Leading the way is a singer from the Kingpins who co-wrote his hit but used his real name (Charles Thomas) on the credits. That he enters several places higher than Ronnie Carroll is of interest, as the latter was the UK Eurovision entry in which Brad Newman also had an entry (a different song that flopped). "Somebody To Love" was his only hit and that only a #47, although that's 3 places higher than Tommy Bruce managed (yes, Babette is another 50 for 1 week single).
After two flops with spoken word odes, Jimmy Dean finally does chart again with the sequel to "Big Bad John", in which his Cajun queen rescues him from the mine, gives him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and they go on and have 110 grandchildren.
James Darren's hit is the follow-up to "Goodbye Cruel World".

3 March 1962:

-- ( -- ) Dr Kildare - Johnny Spence
The Everly Brothers stay at #1. The "Twisting" sensation continues with Sam Cooke's high entry and lower down 2 other classics enter for Roy Orbison and the Shadows. Essentially a very good week for new ones.
Two theme tunes by people called Johnny. The former is popular at Everton. The latter has a vocal version coming up by Richard Chamberlain, the version with which I am more familiar, and will decide whether to allow that as it is a different version.
Patsy Cline in between follows up her #1. Unfortunately she will not see the year out.

10 March 1962:
1 ( 5 ) Twistin' The Night Away - Sam Cooke < 2nd #1 > 2 ( 1 ) Crying In The Rain - Everly Brothers (#1[5]) 3 ( 2 ) Hey! Baby - Bruce Channel (#2) 4 ( 3 ) Hole In The Ground - Bernard Cribbins (#3) 5 ( 9 ) Dream Baby (How Long Must I Dream) - Roy Orbison 6 ( 10 ) Wonderful Land - Shadows 7 ( 4 ) Shadrack - Brook Benton (#3) 8 ( 6 ) March Of The Siamese Children - Kenny Ball & His Jazzmen (#6) 9 ( 15 ) Theme From Z Cars - Johnny Keating 10 ( 11 ) Somebody To Love - Brad Newman
11 ( 17 ) She's Got You - Patsy Cline 12 ( 8 ) Let Me In - Sensations (#8) 13 ( 7 ) Chip Chip - Gene McDaniels (#5) 14 ( 13 ) Percolator (Twist) - Billy Joe & The Checkmates (#13) 15 ( 12 ) Tuff - Ace Cannon (#9) 16 ( 18 ) The Cajun Queen - Jimmy Dean 17 ( 20 ) Babette - Tommy Bruce 18 ( 16 ) Tell Me What He Said - Helen Shapiro (#14) 19 ( -- ) Fanlight Fanny - Clinton Ford 20 ( 14 ) The Young Ones - Cliff Richard (#1[1])
21 ( -- ) Please Don't Ask About Barbara - Bobby Vee 22 ( 24 ) Walk With Me My Angel - Don Charles 23 ( 25 ) Her Royal Majesty - James Darren 24 ( 27 ) Ring A Ding Girl - Ronnie Carroll 25 ( 19 ) Walk Away - Shane Fenton & The Fentones (#12) 26 ( -- ) Where Have All the Flowers Gone - Kingston Trio 27 ( 23 ) It's A Raggy Waltz - Dave Brubeck (#17) 28 ( -- ) Hey Let's Twist - Joey Dee & The Starliters 29 ( 21 ) He's Old Enough To Know Better - Brook Brothers (#8) 30 ( 22 ) Forget Me Not - Eden Kane (#3)
-- ( 26 ) Duke Of Earl - Gene Chandler (#4) -- ( 28 ) Don't Stop Twist - Frankie Vaughan (#18) -- ( 29 ) Turn On Your Love Light - "Bobby ""Blue"" Bland" (#7) -- ( 30 ) I'm Blue (The Gong-Gong Song) - Ikettes (#24)
As Sam Cooke gets his 2nd number one, we have a relatively quiet week on the new entry side. The highest entry is a song mostly known to me through cabaret performances by Ray Reynolds, a member of the George Formby fan club. "Fanlight Fanny" is a George Formby song dating back to 1935.
Meanwhile another hit for Bobby Vee, not one of his better known ones and not likely to do as well as the last few. Where have all the flowers gone? Wait 5 years or so... Meanwhile twisting is the current sensation and Peppermint Twist was a US #1 for Joe Dee and the Starliters (#18 on this chart in December 1961) and they have another twist song out.

17 March 1962:
1 ( 1 ) Twistin' The Night Away - Sam Cooke < 2nd week at #1 > 2 ( 5 ) Dream Baby (How Long Must I Dream) - Roy Orbison 3 ( 2 ) Crying In The Rain - Everly Brothers (#1[5]) 4 ( 6 ) Wonderful Land - Shadows 5 ( 3 ) Hey! Baby - Bruce Channel (#2) 6 ( 4 ) Hole In The Ground - Bernard Cribbins (#3) 7 ( 9 ) Theme From Z Cars - Johnny Keating 8 ( 11 ) She's Got You - Patsy Cline 9 ( -- ) Hey! Little Girl - Del Shannon 10 ( 10 ) Somebody To Love - Brad Newman
11 ( 19 ) Fanlight Fanny - Clinton Ford 12 ( 8 ) March Of The Siamese Children - Kenny Ball & His Jazzmen (#6) 13 ( 7 ) Shadrack - Brook Benton (#3) 14 ( 21 ) Please Don't Ask About Barbara - Bobby Vee 15 ( -- ) Love Letters - Ketty Lester 16 ( 16 ) The Cajun Queen - Jimmy Dean 17 ( 17 ) Babette - Tommy Bruce 18 ( 14 ) Percolator (Twist) - Billy Joe & The Checkmates (#13) 19 ( 12 ) Let Me In - Sensations (#8) 20 ( 26 ) Where Have All the Flowers Gone - Kingston Trio
21 ( -- ) Johnny Angel - Shelley Fabares 22 ( 15 ) Tuff - Ace Cannon (#9) 23 ( -- ) Listen To Me - Buddy Holly 24 ( 28 ) Hey Let's Twist - Joey Dee & The Starliters 25 ( 13 ) Chip Chip - Gene McDaniels (#5) 26 ( 22 ) Walk With Me My Angel - Don Charles (#22) 27 ( 18 ) Tell Me What He Said - Helen Shapiro (#14) 28 ( -- ) Lone Rider - John Leyton 29 ( 23 ) Her Royal Majesty - James Darren (#23) 30 ( 24 ) Ring A Ding Girl - Ronnie Carroll (#24)

-- ( -- ) (I've Got) Bonnie - Bobby Rydell -- ( -- ) Slow Twistin' - Chubby Checker & Dee Dee Sharp -- ( -- ) Drums Are My Beat - Sandy Nelson -- ( -- ) Love Me Warm And Tender - Paul Anka -- ( -- ) Come Back Silly Girl - Lettermen
As Sam Cooke remains at #1, Roy Orbison moves to #2 yet again. He has reached the top 2 four times now but only managed one week at number 1 with "Crying". If this doesn't get any higher it will be his 3rd #2 peak since 1960 and he also peaked there in 1989.
Del Shannon enters with one of his two UK #2 peaks from 1962 and of course he had a #1 in 1961 (all the charts). "Love Letters" was covered by Alison Moyet in 1987, and they continue to pull out Buddy Holly's back catalogue, whilst actor John Leyton gets another chart entry but the returns are diminishing. Still that's doing better than Bobby Rydell who had a #1 in 1960 and Chubby Checker who peaked at #3 with both his main "twist" hits on this chart.

Due to the festivals and my therefore having less time to listen to playlists and post charts, I will be continuing this feature but only 3 per week (instead of the more regular 5 per week) over the next month or so.

24 March 1962:
1 ( 1 ) Twistin' The Night Away - Sam Cooke < 3rd week at #1 > 2 ( 2 ) Dream Baby (How Long Must I Dream) - Roy Orbison 3 ( 4 ) Wonderful Land - Shadows 4 ( 9 ) Hey! Little Girl - Del Shannon 5 ( -- ) Good Luck Charm - Elvis Presley 6 ( 3 ) Crying In The Rain - Everly Brothers (#1[5]) 7 ( 7 ) Theme From Z Cars - Johnny Keating 8 ( 8 ) She's Got You - Patsy Cline 9 ( 15 ) Love Letters - Ketty Lester 10 ( 11 ) Fanlight Fanny - Clinton Ford
11 ( -- ) Brazilian Love Song - Nat King Cole 12 ( 5 ) Hey! Baby - Bruce Channel (#2) 13 ( 6 ) Hole In The Ground - Bernard Cribbins (#3) 14 ( 14 ) Please Don't Ask About Barbara - Bobby Vee 15 ( 10 ) Somebody To Love - Brad Newman (#10) 16 ( 21 ) Johnny Angel - Shelley Fabares 17 ( 23 ) Listen To Me - Buddy Holly 18 ( 20 ) Where Have All the Flowers Gone - Kingston Trio 19 ( 16 ) The Cajun Queen - Jimmy Dean (#16) 20 ( 12 ) March Of The Siamese Children - Kenny Ball & His Jazzmen (#6)
21 ( -- ) Jamie - Eddie Holland 22 ( 17 ) Babette - Tommy Bruce (#17) 23 ( 28 ) Lone Rider - John Leyton 24 ( 13 ) Shadrack - Brook Benton (#3) 25 ( -- ) When My Little Girl Is Smiling - Craig Douglas 26 ( 24 ) Hey Let's Twist - Joey Dee & The Starliters (#24) 27 ( 18 ) Percolator (Twist) - Billy Joe & The Checkmates (#13) 28 ( 19 ) Let Me In - Sensations (#8) 29 ( 22 ) Tuff - Ace Cannon (#9) 30 ( 26 ) Walk With Me My Angel - Don Charles (#22)
-- ( 25 ) Chip Chip - Gene McDaniels (#5) -- ( 27 ) Tell Me What He Said - Helen Shapiro (#14) -- ( 29 ) Her Royal Majesty - James Darren (#23) -- ( 30 ) Ring A Ding Girl - Ronnie Carroll (#24)
-- ( -- ) Young World - Rick Nelson -- ( -- ) Mashed Potato Time - Dee Dee Sharp
No change in the top 2 but the King is back once again, Good Luck Charm entering at #5 and attempting to become his 5th number one of the decade. With the traditional "a-ha-ha" that we heard previously in "All Shook Up". However recall that about 15 months ago we had a hit by Jess Conrad called "Mystery Girl" which bears a remarkable similarity with this one.
From one king to another, Nat King Cole gets an interesting entry with Brazilian Love Song. This peaked at #34 for him.
Eddie Holland was one of the Holland Dozier Holland team who wrote a lot of Motown songs. I didn't know that he'd previously been a singer and it turns out he didn't actually write or co-write this song. Craig Douglas also manages another hit.
Rick Nelson drops the 'y' at the end of his first name at this point but isn't successful in getting a hit. And Dee Dee Sharp can do the Mashed Potato and she can do the twist (with Chubby) but she can't get in the chart..

"Johnny Angel" is a personal favourite, very possible contender for # 1 in my retrospective.

His four previous #1s have been:
Stuck On You (2 weeks in 1960) It's Now Or Never (5 weeks in 1960) Marie's The Name (His Latest Flame) (4 weeks in 1961) Rock-A-Hula Baby (2 weeks in 1962)

A chart dated with my birthday, however I was still 3 years away and then the leap year of 1968 skipped Saturday so my first actual Saturday birthday is 1973.
Elvis sails to number one. The highest entry is an adaptation of a classical piece by Tchaikovsy from the Nutcracker Suite (ballet) thus its title "Nut Rocker". And the origin of the name of the band came after they did an interpretation of Flight of the Bumble Bee which was a minor NM hit last year.
Not that many entries this week. Clyde McPhatter is an ex-Drifter, Joe Loss a band-leader and Fats Domino gets another hit.

7 April 1962:

Little Girl - Del Shannon (#3) 5 ( 2 ) Twistin' The Night Away - Sam Cooke (#1[3]) 6 ( 6 ) Brazilian Love Song - Nat King Cole 7 ( 11 ) Lover Please - Clyde McPhatter 8 ( -- ) Speak To Me Pretty - Brenda Lee 9 ( 4 ) Dream Baby (How Long Must I Dream) - Roy Orbison (#2[2]) 10 ( 5 ) Wonderful Land - Shadows (#3)
11 ( 8 ) Love Letters - Ketty Lester (#8) 12 ( 17 ) Theme From Maigret - Joe Loss 13 ( 14 ) Jamie - Eddie Holland 14 ( -- ) It's All Over Now - Shane Fenton & The Fentones 15 ( 9 ) Theme From Z Cars - Johnny Keating (#7) 16 ( 10 ) She's Got You - Patsy Cline (#8) 17 ( 15 ) Johnny Angel - Shelley Fabares (#15) 18 ( 19 ) When My Little Girl Is Smiling - Craig Douglas 19 ( -- ) Everybody's Twisting - Frank Sinatra 20 ( 16 ) Listen To Me - Buddy Holly (#16)

-- ( 22 ) Hey! Baby - Bruce Channel (#2[2]) -- ( 23 ) Somebody To Love - Brad Newman (#10) -- ( 24 ) Hole In The Ground - Bernard Cribbins (#3) -- ( 25 ) The Cajun Queen - Jimmy Dean (#16) -- ( 26 ) Babette - Tommy Bruce (#17) -- ( 27 ) March Of The Siamese Children - Kenny Ball & His Jazzmen (#6) -- ( 28 ) Hey Let's Twist - Joey Dee & The Starliters (#24) -- ( 30 ) Walk With Me My Angel - Don Charles (#22)
-- ( -- ) The Party's Over - Lonnie Donegan
As Elvis holds on to the top with the Nut Rocker moving up, we get a debut hit for a 16 year old boy who, like Annette Funicello, the star of 1960 on this chart, was a former mousketeer, and like Shelley Fabares who is in the chart, starred on the Donna Reed show.
The song is rather twee but also funny, listing all the kinds of things women put in their handbags (albeit going to extremes).

14 April 1962:
1 ( 3 ) She Can't Find Her Keys - Paul Petersen < 1st #1 > 2 ( 1 ) Good Luck Charm - Elvis Presley (#1[2]) 3 ( 2 ) Nut Rocker - B Bumble & The Stingers (#2[1]) 4 ( 8 ) Speak To Me Pretty - Brenda Lee 5 ( 7 ) Lover Please - Clyde McPhatter 6 ( 4 ) Hey! Little Girl - Del Shannon (#3) 7 ( 14 ) It's All Over Now - Shane Fenton & The Fentones 8 ( 6 ) Brazilian Love Song - Nat King Cole (#6) 9 ( 5 ) Twistin' The Night Away - Sam Cooke (#1[3]) 10 ( 12 ) Theme From Maigret - Joe Loss
11 ( 19 ) Everybody's Twisting - Frank Sinatra 12 ( -- ) Ginny Come Lately - Brian Hyland 13 ( 13 ) Jamie - Eddie Holland 14 ( 11 ) Love Letters - Ketty Lester (#8) 15 ( 9 ) Dream Baby (How Long Must I Dream) - Roy Orbison (#2[2]) 16 ( 10 ) Wonderful Land - Shadows (#3) 17 ( 18 ) When My Little Girl Is Smiling - Craig Douglas 18 ( 27 ) Soldier Boy - Shirelles 19 ( 28 ) You Better Move On - Arthur Alexander 20 ( 17 ) Johnny Angel - Shelley Fabares (#15)
21 ( 24 ) You Win Again - Fats Domino 22 ( 29 ) Shout Part I - Joey Dee & The Starliters 23 ( 15 ) Theme From Z Cars - Johnny Keating (#7) 24 ( 30 ) Dear One - Larry Finnegan 25 ( 16 ) She's Got You - Patsy Cline (#8) 26 ( 20 ) Listen To Me - Buddy Holly (#16) 27 ( -- ) Twist Twist Senora - Gary U.S. Bonds 28 ( 23 ) Lone Rider - John Leyton (#21) 29 ( 21 ) Fanlight Fanny - Clinton Ford (#10) 30 ( 26 ) Where Have All the Flowers Gone - Kingston Trio (#18)
-- ( 22 ) Crying In The Rain - Everly Brothers (#1[5]) -- ( 25 ) Please Don't Ask About Barbara - Bobby Vee (#14)
-- ( -- ) Wonderful World Of The Young - Danny Williams -- ( -- ) Honest I Do - Danny Storm -- ( -- ) She Cried - Jay & The Americans -- ( -- ) Cinderella - Jack Ross
Paul Petersen climbs to the top. This is only the 2nd #1 on this chart so far that was not a UK hit - the first being "Pineapple Princess" by Annette Funicello in 1960. I don't know if there is a particular reason why Mouseketeers had no success in the UK as many of the other US stars were teenagers yet still found success in the UK.
Well actually the 3rd as Brenda Lee's #1 hasn't yet reached the UK chart but will later this year. She also climbs to #4 this week with the song that would be her highest peaking in the UK chart (#3). She was also a US teen star and yet found success over here.
Paul Petersen actually said about his current hit that he got confused with Brian Hyland. There are some similarities with this and "Itsy Teeny" in its production and style. Brian Hyland though has left that management / songwriting team and moved to a new one, and sounds totally different. This was his 3rd biggest hit in the UK, the two bigger ones both became UK #1s in 1989 and 1990 when covered and I remember saying back then that I ought to cover this song.
The only other entry this week is another "twist" song by Gary US Bonds. I didn't go through last week's entries in detail enough. The most notable ones are the Shirelles with what became a US #1 and Joey Dee because this song will be a UK hit for Lulu in 1964 and I have to decide whether to allow it (although I think Lulu's version reached my chart in 1986). Of course "shout" goes with "twist" as the Isley Brothers, who wrote this song, would go on and record (but didn't write) the song that mentions both. That song will be around later in this year.

A degree of similarity between mine and your number ones:
Mine RR chart toppers were:
Acker Bilk - Stranger On The Shore (1wks Jan 62) Cliff Richard & The Shadows - The Young Ones (2wks Jan 62) Everly Brothers - Crying In The Rain (4wks Feb 62) Gene Chandler - Duke Of Earl (2wks Mar 62) Shadows - Wonderful Land (5wks Mar 62) Elvis Presley - Good Luck Charm (2wks Apr 62)
Whilst Twistin' The Night Away spent two weeks at #2; Rock-A-Hula Baby peaked at #20, as I much preferred the other side Can't Help Falling In Love #3 peak.
However, what are thinking with that Paul Petersen tune = an awful perky track inspired by Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini, sung by a teen idol who can't sing in tune..
