Spandau Ballet win our gold medal this week as they win the number one position. This pushes last weeks chart topper from KC and the Sunshine Band down to three with Depeche Mode still making those points count by holding at two. Elton John still stands at four with Wham! sliding to three this week as their holiday hangover kicks in.

It does not surprise me that we made Gold a #1 and True only a #2. It's interesting to note in my chart how many times I switched the #1s and #2s in 1982 and 1983. In 1982 I had only one UK/NM #1 but loads that were #1 in one chart and #2 in the other.

Once upon a time Chris De Burgh produced some really good records. One of my favourites is "Ship To Shore" from 1982's "The Getaway" LP. The single didn't chart in Britain, but it peaked at #71 in the USA in August 1983, and was his 4th biggest hit in America.

Don't Pay The Ferryman was already a hit on this chart last year and it did well in my chart.

The Surrey born former session singer for Toni Basil and Tina Charles, scores her only UK Top 40 hit with a New Wave cover of The Doors classic. Incidentally the keyboardist on this track is future Marillion singer (Fish replacement) Steve Hogarth; and after her brief period of success she resumed occasional session singing and touring duties for a handful of 1990s acts including .... Marillion.

Gary Byrd extends his reign at the top of the chart to three weeks....10 new entries, the highest of which is Michael Jackson with 'Human Nature', the fifth track to chart from 'Thriller' making a high debut at number 12 and poised to continue the run of Top Ten songs from this album (extending the source of songs from this week to UK and US Top 100).....A massive 16 songs climbing the chart, the biggest jump coming from The Weather Girls, up 23 places to make a splash in the Top Ten.
A high new entry this week from Ryan Paris with 'Dolce Vita' in at number 18, I remember this song being played constantly whilst on a family holiday in Spain.

Men Without Hats has to get to #1! I've started looking a couple of weeks ahead with the charts, because if I heard a song on the radio back then and liked it, it would be in my charts. I was hoping others might do the same... As for the #1, hated it and still do, poor choice

As for the #1, hated it and still do, poor choice I wasn't around back then but I can only imagine that normally once e song aired on radio it was already available hence why we had more climbers.

Nearly impossible to do that, I probably haven't playlisted most of the UK top 100.
Anyway, the next NM chart of 1983:
1(5) Air Supply - Making Love Out Of Nothing At All 2(1) Spandau Ballet - Gold 3(3) Elton John - I'm Still Standing 4(2) KC & The Sunshine Band - Give It Up 5(10) Billy Joel - Tell Her About It
6(9) Madness - Wings Of A Dove 7(4) Kinks - Come Dancing 8(12) Level 42 - The Sun Goes Down (Livin' It Up) 9(6) Depeche Mode - Everything Counts 10(16) UB40 - Red Red Wine
11(7) Style Council - Long Hot Summer 12(-) Rod Stewart - What Am I Gonna Do 13(18) Carmel - Bad Day 14(8) Robert Plant - Big Log 15(24) Stray Cats - She's Sexy And Seventeen
16(-) Roberta Flack & Peabo Bryson - Tonight I Celebrate My Love 17(13) Michael Sembello - Maniac 18(20) David Grant - Watching You Wathcing Me 19(21) Modern Romance - Walking In The Rain 20(23) Moody Blues - Blue World
21(-) Genesis - Mama 22(11) Gary Byrd Experience - The Crown 23(-) Men Without Hats - The Safety Dance 24(14) Culture Club - I'll Tumble 4 Ya 25(15) Jimmy The Hoover - Tantalise
26(-) Big Country - Chance 27(-) New Order - Confusion 28(19) Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin - Busy Doing Nothing 29(17) Wham! - Club Tropicana 30(-) Cliff Richard - Never Say Die (Give A Little Bit More)
--(25) Police - Wrapped Around Your Finger --(26) Bananarama - Cruel Summer --(27) Michael Jackson - Human Nature --(28) Lotus Eaters - The First Picture Of You --(29) Kim Wilde - Love Blondie --(30) Tracie - Give It Some Emotion
Air Supply doing a song written by Jim Steinman - bound to be a winning combination really. Jim Steinman had written number ones for Meat Loaf and the big hit earlier this year for Bonnie Tyler and Air Supply had already had 3 number ones and a load of other top 5 hits in the 1980s. All their previous number ones though had been self-penned: actually written by Graham Russell. Their NM #1s all contained the word "Love" in the title.
Most of the artists that enter the chart this week all have some connection with the 1970s. Rod Stewart, Roberta Flack and Genesis all had their earlier hits in that decade, Cliff Richard went back even further, New Order were formed out of Joy Division who were indie favourites in the late 70s although they didn't chart mainstream until 1980 and Stuart Adamson of Big Country had some 1970s hits with the Skids.
The only other entrants are Men Without Hats, a Canadian band in the US chart at this point.

During 1983 I took some songs from the US chart and The Safety Dance (as well as Billy Joel's "Tell Her About It" were already in the chart in late August -> September. Tell Her About It doesn't reach the UK chart until even later. And there's one coming up in my chart soon that won't hit the UK chart until spring 1985.

Also 'Safety Dance' it is Top 100 in UK in this week that's why some of us are charting it. I am also charting that song not out again till 1985 as it was only re-issued as a cashin on their UK success, it will be my biggest entry next week, so will go by the 1st release as I have stated previously doing the same thing with Heart when we get to 'These Dreams'
