Ryan Paris surges to the top of the chart with 'Dolce Vita', the first time that a record has climbed to number one from outside the Top Ten. A second consecutive Rap number one is thwarted as Kurtis Blow is pipped into second place....The highest of seven new entries is from Howard Jones, in at number 28 with 'New Song'...The highest of 20 climbers is Men Without Hats, up 19 places to number 19 with 'The Safety Dance' (which should please o ....Other Top Ten contenders next week include Peabo & Roberta, Rick James and Jeffrey Osborne. My song of the week is from Little River Band, another Top Ten contender. I'd never heard of them before and don't know anything about them, but came across this when I was looking through the Billboard chart for this week. They've got quite a big back catalogue on You Tube, I'll have to check out some of their other stuff. It's something a bit different to the stuff I'm charting at the moment at least. This is a nice live performance by them... 18 1) Ryan Paris - Dolce Vita (18-1) 2 weeks PEAK: 1 3 2) Kurtis Blow - Party Time (29-12-3-2) 4 weeks PEAK: 2 1 3) Gary Byrd and The GB Experience - The Crown (23-5-2-1-1-1-3) 7 weeks PEAK: 1 5 4) Katie Kissoon - You're The One (You're My Number One) (35-16-5-4) 4 weeks PEAK: 4 8 5) Julie Roberts - Fool For You (38-23-8-5) 4 weeks PEAK: 5 7 6) Weather Girls - It's Raining Men (30-7-6) 3 weeks PEAK: 6 2 7) Serge Ponsar - Out In The Night (34-22-6-2-7) 5 weeks PEAK: 2 11 8) UB40 - Red Red Wine (27-11-8) 3 weeks PEAK: 8 12 9) Michael Jackson - Human Nature (12-9) 2 weeks PEAK: 9 23 10) Michael Sembello - Maniac (36-23-10) 3 weeks PEAK: 10 10 11) The Manhattans - Crazy (26-15-11-10-11) 5 weeks PEAK: 10 4 12) Clubhouse - Do It Again-Billie Jean (Medley) (17-4-4-3-3-4-12) 7 weeks PEAK: 3 24 13) Peabo Bryson and Roberta Flack - Tonight I Celebrate My Love (35-24-13) 3 weeks PEAK: 13 6 14) Elton John - I'm Still Standing (14-8-5-2-6-14) 6 weeks PEAK: 2 20 15) Rick James - Cold Blooded WEEK 1 (28-20-15) 3 weeks PEAK: 15 25 16) Little River Band - You're Driving Me Out Of My Mind (25-16) 2 weeks PEAK: 16 26 17) Jeffrey Osborne - Don't You Get So Mad (33-26-17) 3 weeks PEAK: 17 9 18) Spandau Ballet - Gold (16-8-9-18) 4 weeks PEAK: 8 38 19) Men Without Hats - The Safety Dance (38-19) 2 weeks PEAK: 19 30 20) Hamilton Bohannon - Let's Start The Dance III (38-30-20) 3 weeks PEAK: 20 22 21) Style Council - Long Hot Summer/Paris Match (32-22-22-21) 4 weeks PEAK: 21 15 22) Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel - Ballerina (Prima Donna) (26-15-15-22) 4 weeks PEAK: 15 28 23) Smokey Robinson & Barbara Mitchell - Blame It On Love (28-23) 2 weeks PEAK: 23 13 24) Herbie Hancock - Rockit (24-9-6-5-13-24) 6 weeks PEAK: 5 32 25) Midnight Star - Freak-a-Zoid (32-25) 2 weeks PEAK: 25 14 26) KC and The Sunshine Band - Give It Up (19-6-3-3-2-4-14-26) 8 weeks PEAK: 2 31 27) Rod Stewart - What Am I Gonna Do (31-27) 2 weeks PEAK: 27 NEW 28) Howard Jones - New Song (28) 1 week PEAK: 28 16 29) Asia - Don't Cry (33-17-16-29) 4 weeks PEAK: 16 35 30) Laura Branigan - How Am I Supposed To Live Without You (35-30) 2 weeks PEAK: 30 17 31) Kim Wilde - Love Blonde (31-12-7-7-17-31) 6 weeks PEAK: 7 NEW 32) Junior - Runnin' (32) 1 week PEAK: 32 NEW 33) Haywoode - A Time Like This (33) 1 week PEAK: 33 NEW 34) Raw Silk - Just In Time (34) 1 week PEAK: 34 39 35) Sylvester - Band Of Gold (39-35) 2 weeks PEAK: 35 NEW 36) Edwin Starr - Smooth (36) 1 week PEAK: 36 21 37) Freeez - I.O.U. This week's featured track is the title track of Jeff Lynne's band's latest album. Despite it having a very 1983 sound and video it failed to reach the UK top 40, signalling the end was near for his group before becoming a successful producer.

This is a nice live performance by them... Little River Band were a rather successful Australian band from 1975 to the end of the 1980s (they had 7 top 10 & 11 top 20 albums "Down Under" + 14 top 40 singles including their 1977 Oz #1 "Help Is on Its Way") during this period. They had lost their original lead singer Glenn Shorrock who had gone solo, but went from strength to strength by hiring late 1960s to mid 1970s Australian teen idol John Farnham to join them as lead singer in 1982. Until the 1980s with the likes of AC/DC, Air Supply, Men At Work, Icehouse, INXS & Split Enz/Crowded House Australian pop rock music was criminally underrated internationally. You only have to consider that The Easybeats were to the Australian 1960s rock pop scene what The Beatles were to the British music scene, yet in the USA & the UK most music fans could only name one Easybeats song.

You only have to consider that The Easybeats were to the Australian 1960s rock pop scene what The Beatles were to the British music scene, yet in the USA & the UK most music fans could only name one Easybeats song. That's interesting, thank you raliverpool , I've at least heard of John Farnham (well, one record by him anyway!) Unlike the Easybeats, I've not heard of them unfortunately, I'll have to give them a listen although I'm not a big rock fan, so might be a bit wasted on me but we'll see perhaps I'll discover another gem....

Firstly, I would like to see a few more people chart this:
A number of movements this week, especially from outside the top 20 to inside it. The entry in this chart is by Paul Young, a song written by Jack Lee who also wrote "Hangin' On The Telephone". He sang both those songs, "Come Back And Stay" as a solo hit in 1981, "Hangin' On The Telephone" as a member of his band The Nerves in 1976, and both were therefore covered 2 years later. Incidentally Blondie recorded 2 of his songs on Parallel Lines, "Will Anything Happen" being the other, although I think he wrote that specially for them.
The Truth's "Confusion (Hits Us Every Time)" struggled in this chart but maybe they'll go better this time. Ryan Paris has a euro-disco hit especially for people coming back from their holidays, and there are new hits for Status Quo and Heaven 17 at the lower end.

Firstly, I would like to see a few more people chart this: I love AOR more than just about anyone but my tolerance level for the really saccharine end has gone. Some AOR is just a bit drippy see most REO Speedwagon, Chicago, Air Supply and some Journey. This one is too sweet for me, even 'All Out Of Love' I have to be in the mood for these days.

The Little River Band had one hit in my chart, with "Lonesome Loser" in 1979.
Most Brits could only name one Air Supply song too. Americans could probably name a few more, and that would almost certainly include the one at #1 in my chart above. (Note that their only US #1 was actually "The One That You Love" in 1981. That was replaced at #1 by another Aussie, Rick Springfield).
