UK Singles Chart review (Chart Sunday 22 January 1989)
Christmas was well and truly over by this chart as the old 1988 songs finally started to slip away and it was a huge surprise at the top as Marc & Gene shocked the chart listeners by climbing from 10 to 1 after their appearance on the popular Wogan show.
The surprise jump meant Mike & The Mechanic would be left in the runners up spot but could they reach the top next week?
Jumping into the Top 10 for the first time were much lauded Roachford, whom big things were expected of in 1989, the song had made huge leaps from 77 to 31 to 11 and now 7.
The other major climb into the 10 was former Frankie lead singer Holly Johnson another act who was expected to be huge in 1989 "Love Train" had climbed 44 to 21 to 10 and looked good to climb even further in future weeks. The lead single was met with a warm reception but he had a lot to do to live upto the Frankie days.
Outside the Top 10 another lead singer was making strides Robert Howard of the Blow Monkeys had teamed up with the big voice of Kym Mazelle for a lively dance track called "Wait". Not officially a Blow Monkeys song it would appear their album "Whoops!" and "Choices" The greatest Hits.
Brother Beyond were back looking for their third Top 10 single "Be My Twin", it climbed 14 places but could it replicate their previous two singles and go top 10 next week?
Despite the big changes at the top new entries were scarce the highest being at No.21 with new Sheffield band Then Jerico, another act who were being promoted as the big band of 1989.
The other new entries were low down in the 30s.

Oh, nice topic. That's sweet to remember that. I began to but music on my own in 1988 so that brings a lot of memories.

I was always upset Waiting For A Star To Fall didn't get into top 5, I remember the local DJ on the radio saying if only they had released it later and not in January.
Not sure if it would have made a difference maybe a June release for that summery feel.

I detested Mile & The Mechanics' The Living Years and was fully expecting it to be #1 so when Almond and Pitney shot past it it was almost like the best orgasm ever! - and it was a brilliant record too.

1986 (2 February 1986)
There were some big changes at the top of the chart this week in 1986 but it wasn't the expected new No.1, Nana Mouskouri had leapt from 8 to 2 in the last chart and was expected to take over from a-ha but things are never so simple in the chart world and it was Billy Ocean who leapt from 6 to 1 to dethrone the Norwegians and end there two week run at the top.
At the bottom end of the top 10 there were big climbers for Sarah Brightman, who was enjoying her third top 10 in a row as were Simple Minds and James Brown enjoying his first UK Top 10 of his long career.
Outside the top 10 there was a big 20 place climb to No.14 for Double... yes Double you remember them? well if you don't remember them and their single "The Captain Of Her Heart" this is what it sounds like:
It has over 7 million plays on Youtube so lots of people must remember it.
The highest new entry was at No.18 The Damned with "Eloise"
The only other new entry in the chart was Shakin' Stevens "Turning Away" but were some big climbers into the 40 that would go on to be big hits in 1986 including Survivor "Burning Heart" Su Pollard "Starting Together" and Diana Ross "Chain Reaction".
1 (6) BILLY OCEAN When The Going Gets Tough
2 (1) a-ha The Sun Always Shines On TV
3 (4) MADONNA Borderline
4 (2) NANA MOUSKOURI Only Love
5 (3) DIRE STRAITS Walk Of Life
6 (10) FIVE STAR System Addict
7 (12) SARAH BRIGHTMAN & STEVE HARLEY The Phantom Of The Opera
8 (19) JAMES BROWN Living In America
9 (8) FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS Suspicious Minds
10 (17) SIMPLE MINDS Sanctify Yourself
14 (34) DOUBLE The Captain Of Her Heart
18 (NEW) THE DAMNED Eloise
20 (37) PUBIC IMAGE LIMITED Rise
30 (70) SURVIVOR Burning Heart
31 (44) DIANA ROSS Chain Reaction

I'm surprised to remember so many of the songs, as I was only 10.

For some reason, it turned up on Amazon's Movers & Shakers list yesterday, so it had already re-entered my brain. A couple good cover versions in there from Fine Young Cannibals and The Damned. I'm not sure about Pubic Image Ltd. Were they the Christmas (Noel) version of John Lydon's post-Pistols band?

That top 10 doesn't inspire me No.1 and No.2 and No.4 I don't really like, Borderline is a good song but I think I would be hoping for a big change in the next chart and hope most of those started heading south quickly.

One reason why I was hoping Mike + the Mechanics would sneak a week at the top was because they featured Paul Carrack, who had been plugging away for years without a major hit in Britain, and the song was co-written by BA Robertson, who had come close to a no. 1 a decade before. I thought it would be their last chance at scoring a chart-topper, and to date I am correct. So I thought it a bit rotten that they couldn't grab a quick moment of glory before the Almond/Pitney juggernaut.
Surely though they were more than compensated by topping the US charts a few weeks later.

In a sense it was nice the Gene Pitney got a #1 as he had loads of good hits in the 1960s without getting one. I'm Gonna Be Strong was his biggest hit but got stuck behind "Little Red Rooster" then "I Feel Fine".
In my retro chart up to the end of 1963, Gene Pitney got to #2 with "24 Hours From Tulsa" and had a top 5 hit with "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance", both Bacherach/David songs. I'll see how some of his others get on.
And I think the remake of Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart is better than the original. However "The Living Years" is just such a fantastic song. I remember feeling "wow" when I first heard it. And of course Mike Rutherford has never had a #1 single either, as Genesis didn't get higher than #4 in the singles chart albeit they had lots of #1 albums.

Gene Pitney in the States managed the odd feat of being no. 1 and 2 at the same time - no. 1 as songwriter and 2 as performer. I agree it was good to see him at the top of the chart, but he could have waited for a week.
How stupid though was whichever label it was - turning down the chance of a substantial US hit because of fears that the Septics would think Pitney had turned homosexual...

7 February 1999
It was the comeback of the year 18 years since they last had a top 10 and 19 years since there last No.1 Blondie appeared from nowhere to soar straight into No.1 on the UK Singles chart. "Maria" reached the top exactly 20 years since their first No.1 "Heart Of Glass" in 1979.
In the late 90's the singles chart still had not dealt with the enter high let 'em drop scenario and as result there were numerous new entries in the top 10 and there were no climbers inside the top 40 as had become a regular occurence.
Straight in at No.2 was Armand Van Helden with his dance floor anthem "You Don't Know Me" well it was straight in at No.2 despite the fact it was No.1 the week before, I assume this must be a case of a remix being re-released and people finding the original the week before and it making it to the top the week before the official release (I am sure the chart experts on here will correct me on this).
In at No.3 is a song I do not remember at all by Tatyana & Will Smith it didn't hang around the chart very long dropping to No.12 the week after and continued to make swift progress downwards.
In at No.5 was rapper A+ with "Enjoy Yourself" another song which didn't hang around long and neither did he as this was his only chart hit the song sampled a 1976 Walter Murphy song "A Fifth Of Beethoven"
The other new entry in the top 10 was Soulsearcher with a song called "Can't Get Enough"
The other new entries outside the Top would fail to advance in the next chart as again half the top 10 would be new entries, all in all apart from the spectacular return of Blondie the charts did not offer much in the way of entertainment as sad reflection on how the record companies had changed the chart.
1 (NEW) BLONDIE Maria
2 (NEW) (1) ARMAND VAN HELDEN/DUANE HARDEN You Don't Know Me
3 (NEW) TATYANA & WILL SMITH Boy You Knock Me Out
4 (2) OFFSPRING Pretty Fly For A White Guy
5 (NEW) A+ Enjoy Yourself
6 (3) STEPS Heartbeat/Tragedy
7 (5) BRYAN ADAMS & MELANIE C When Your Gone
8 (NEW) SOULSEARCHER Can't Get Enough
9 (7) TQ Westside
10 (4) DRU HILL These Are The Times

I felt at the time that the "fast in fast out" nature of the UK top 40 wasn't a good thing, but it's better than the slowness we have now.
I always felt the kind of movements we got from the 60s up to early 90s was more "normal" and healthier. There were singles that hung around the top 40 for a very long time even back then, but they were the exception. We also had singles enter at #1 but they were always be well-established artists.
The nonsense of having single prices reduced for the first week then doubled was part of the cause. If you weren't tempted to buy it on its first week, why would you then rush out and buy it when its price had doubled?

I think it's just an error in the OCC database that shows Armand Van Helden as a new entry at 2, possibly due to variant spellings of the title on the chart printout at the time. It was the same single in the shops.
I do remember the Tatyana Ali song. She played one of Will Smith's cousins in Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air, hence his presence on the single, where he references his own lyrics from 'Summertime'. Needless to say, it wasn't very good.

I seem to remember in the late 90's there were some songs that got remixed and the original would chart the week before the official release as people were wanting the song hearing it on the radio upto 6 weeks before release would buy any copy they could find.

Occasionally an import version would chart ahead of UK release but never a remix. Occasionally a remix would chart later due to chart restrictions only allowing a limited number of formats to count, so a further release would have to chart seperately.
As thehitparade said its just a mistake on the OCC database because the artist credit was changed to include singer Duane Harden (the Catalogue number is identical)
