-- ( 29 ) Don't Talk To Him - Cliff Richard (#5) -- ( 30 ) Pretty Paper - Roy Orbison (#30)
-- ( -- ) For Your Precious Love - Garnet Mimms & The Enchanters
A quiet start to the year but we already have the debut of a major artist that will be around for a while. Not that we'd have known this at the time. The Supremes make their debut in this chart.
Brenda Lee takes advantage of the lack of movement near the top of the chart and climbs 5 places to get her 2nd biggest hit. Whether she will manage her 2nd #1 will depend whether she can pass the Beatles and of course whether or not she can prevent anyone else flying past her.
Chuck Berry's Christmas hit falls and Roy Orbison's, which will be a UK top 10 hit the following year, drops out after just one week at #30.

-- ( -- ) All My Loving - Dowlands -- ( -- ) Daisy Petal Pickin' - Jimmy Gilmer & The Fireballs
For the second time within a few months, the Ronettes have knocked the Beatles off the top of the chart. This is not likely to repeat itself again though. And Brenda Lee was poised to do so and ends up unluckily stuck at #2. As this was her last big UK hit, I'm not sure how many more chances she will have for a second #1.
The Bacherach-David composition that had 3 versions in the UK top 50 at one point enters for Dionne Warwick and will be the only charting version here.
Rick Nelson's entry has a "merseybeat" sound to it, but is an old song written in 1930. He is signed to Decca Records at this point. Dave Berry still wants to sound like his namesake Chuck but this time isn't recording one of his songs. "Somewhere" by the Tymes is based on a Mozart sonata, and the Rip Chords hit about a snake went top 10 in the USA. Marketts is an instrumental.
All those 7 entries mean no space for an inferior Beatles cover, and whilst there's an obvious temptation to swap it for the original, is not really within the scope of this chart. However I can tell you that their next single is shortly on its way, and you won't have to wait for "Can't Buy Me Love", there's another one in between...

There will be a lot more Supremes hits over the next few years. I can never tell what else will be around at the time, but there is a good chance they may get at least one number 1.

18 January 1964:
1 ( 1 ) Baby I Love You - Ronettes < 2nd week at #1 > 2 ( 2 ) As Usual - Brenda Lee 3 ( 6 ) Anyone Who Had A Heart - Dionne Warwick 4 ( 9 ) For You - Rick Nelson 5 ( 4 ) I'm In Love - Fourmost (#4) 6 ( -- ) Needles And Pins - Searchers 7 ( 8 ) When The Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes - Supremes 8 ( 3 ) I Want To Hold Your Hand - Beatles (#1[3]) 9 ( -- ) I'm The One - Gerry & The Pacemakers 10 ( -- ) I Think Of You - Merseybeats
11 ( 5 ) I Only Want To Be With You - Dusty Springfield (#1[2]) 12 ( -- ) You Don't Own Me - Lesley Gore 13 ( 7 ) Popsicles And Icicles - Murmaids (#3) 14 ( -- ) Do You Want Me To - Four Pennies 15 ( 21 ) My Baby Left Me - Dave Berry 16 ( 10 ) Hippy Hippy Shake - Swinging Blue Jeans (#8) 17 ( 12 ) Baby Don't You Weep - Garnet Mimms & The Enchanters (#11) 18 ( 17 ) Do You Really Love Me Too - Billy Fury (#17) 19 ( -- ) Um Um Um Um Um Um Um - Major Lance 20 ( 14 ) Drag City - Jan & Dean (#13)
21 ( 25 ) Out Of Limits - Marketts 22 ( 11 ) Glad All Over - Dave Clark Five (#3) 23 ( 18 ) Surfin' Bird - Trashmen (#18) 24 ( -- ) Poison Ivy - Paramounts 25 ( 28 ) Somewhere - Tymes 26 ( 13 ) Wives And Lovers - Jack Jones (#6) 27 ( 29 ) Hey Little Cobra - Rip Chords 28 ( 16 ) The Boy Next Door - Secrets (#12) 29 ( 15 ) Geronimo - Shadows (#9) 30 ( -- ) Song Of Mexico - Tony Meehan
-- ( 19 ) Run Rudolph Run - Chuck Berry (#5) -- ( 20 ) Not Too Little Not Too Much - Chris Sandford (#16) -- ( 22 ) Quicksand - Martha & The Vandellas (#12) -- ( 23 ) Walking Alone - Richard Anthony (#16) -- ( 24 ) Kansas City - Trini Lopez (#21) -- ( 26 ) Kiss Me Quick - Elvis Presley (#23) -- ( 27 ) You Were Made For Me - Freddie & The Dreamers (#1[2]) -- ( 30 ) In My Room - Beach Boys (#26)
-- ( -- ) Hooka Tooka - Chubby Checker
The highest new entry was the second UK #1 for the Searchers, who kept Gerry & The Pacemakers out in so doing. Both started with 3 number ones and a #2 with early hits (although the Searchers also had a minor hit with a cover of a song originally by the singer currently at #2).
The Searchers did not write their song, in fact it was co-written by Sonny Bono. And it was covered also in 1977 for a UK hit version by Smokie.
Gerry & The Pacemakers did not write any of their 3 hits from 1963 that topped the UK chart, but they did write "I'm The One" and many of their subsequent hits. Gerry Marsden would finally get his songwriting credit on a #1 in 1989 with "Ferry Across The Mersey".
I suppose a band called the Merseybeats were bound to succeed. "I Think Of You" is quite a nice "folk" song. "Do You Want Me To" by the Four Pennies is uptempo and you wouldn't have guessed at this point they'd get to #1 with a doo-wop song later in the year.
3 other entries that have all been UK hits also as cover versions. We didn't have to wait long for the cover of Um * 6 as Wayne Fontana got hold of it within a year. Poison Ivy came back in 1980 for the Lambrettas, and You Don't Own Me has been covered very recently.

25 January 1964:
1 ( 1 ) Baby I Love You - Ronettes < 3rd week at #1 > 2 ( 3 ) Anyone Who Had A Heart - Dionne Warwick 3 ( 6 ) Needles And Pins - Searchers 4 ( 4 ) For You - Rick Nelson 5 ( 2 ) As Usual - Brenda Lee (#2[3]) 6 ( 9 ) I'm The One - Gerry & The Pacemakers 7 ( -- ) 5-4-3-2-1 - Manfred Mann 8 ( 10 ) I Think Of You - Merseybeats 9 ( 12 ) You Don't Own Me - Lesley Gore 10 ( 14 ) Do You Want Me To - Four Pennies
11 ( 5 ) I'm In Love - Fourmost (#4) 12 ( 7 ) When The Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes - Supremes (#7) 13 ( 19 ) Um Um Um Um Um Um Um - Major Lance 14 ( 15 ) My Baby Left Me - Dave Berry 15 ( -- ) Diane - Bachelors 16 ( 8 ) I Want To Hold Your Hand - Beatles (#1[3]) 17 ( 24 ) Poison Ivy - Paramounts 18 ( 11 ) I Only Want To Be With You - Dusty Springfield (#1[2]) 19 ( 21 ) Out Of Limits - Marketts 20 ( 13 ) Popsicles And Icicles - Murmaids (#3)
21 ( 18 ) Do You Really Love Me Too - Billy Fury (#17) 22 ( -- ) A Fool Never Learns - Andy Williams 23 ( 30 ) Song Of Mexico - Tony Meehan 24 ( 17 ) Baby Don't You Weep - Garnet Mimms & The Enchanters (#11) 25 ( 16 ) Hippy Hippy Shake - Swinging Blue Jeans (#8) 26 ( 25 ) Somewhere - Tymes (#25) 27 ( 27 ) Hey Little Cobra - Rip Chords 28 ( 20 ) Drag City - Jan & Dean (#13) 29 ( 23 ) Surfin' Bird - Trashmen (#18) 30 ( -- ) Talking About My Baby - Impressions
-- ( 22 ) Glad All Over - Dave Clark Five (#3) -- ( 26 ) Wives And Lovers - Jack Jones (#6) -- ( 28 ) The Boy Next Door - Secrets (#12) -- ( 29 ) Geronimo - Shadows (#9)
-- ( -- ) My Special Dream - Shirley Bassey
An exciting debut entry at #7 for Manfred Mann, who are both a band and the keyboard player who has that name. The tune is the theme to the TV show "Ready Steady Go" so it's an old case of a TV show selling a hit. They namecheck themselves in the song - well sort of, calling themselves "The Manfreds", and it's a skiffle-style song.
The remaining entries are a bit more "easy listening". The Bachelors are an Irish vocal harmony band, not quite doo-wop, perhaps a bit more old-fashioned, and the song Diane dates back to 1927. The Impressions are also a harmony band, but a bit more modern. A Fool Never Learns is one of Andy Williams's more uptempo songs.
Shirley Bassey fails to chart again. I think she should change style a bit away from the ballads and take a leaf out of Matt Monro's book and do a James Bond theme...

There's a big entry coming up on the next chart.

1 February 1964
1 ( 1 ) Baby I Love You - Ronettes < 3rd week at #1 > 2 ( 2 ) Anyone Who Had A Heart - Dionne Warwick 3 ( 7 ) 5-4-3-2-1 - Manfred Mann 4 ( 3 ) Needles And Pins - Searchers (#3) 5 ( -- ) Java - Al Hirt 6 ( 6 ) I'm The One - Gerry & The Pacemakers 7 ( 4 ) For You - Rick Nelson (#4) 8 ( 15 ) Diane - Bachelors 9 ( 8 ) I Think Of You - Merseybeats (#8) 10 ( 9 ) You Don't Own Me - Lesley Gore (#9)
11 ( 10 ) Do You Want Me To - Four Pennies (#10) 12 ( 5 ) As Usual - Brenda Lee (#2[3]) 13 ( 13 ) Um Um Um Um Um Um Um - Major Lance 14 ( 17 ) Poison Ivy - Paramounts 15 ( 22 ) A Fool Never Learns - Andy Williams 16 ( 14 ) My Baby Left Me - Dave Berry (#14) 17 ( -- ) Boys Cry - Eden Kane 18 ( 12 ) When The Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes - Supremes (#7) 19 ( 11 ) I'm In Love - Fourmost (#4) 20 ( 19 ) Out Of Limits - Marketts (#19)
21 ( 23 ) Song Of Mexico - Tony Meehan 22 ( 30 ) Talking About My Baby - Impressions 23 ( 16 ) I Want To Hold Your Hand - Beatles (#1[3]) 24 ( 21 ) Do You Really Love Me Too - Billy Fury (#17) 25 ( 18 ) I Only Want To Be With You - Dusty Springfield (#1[2]) 26 ( 27 ) Hey Little Cobra - Rip Chords 27 ( 20 ) Popsicles And Icicles - Murmaids (#3) 28 ( 26 ) Somewhere - Tymes (#25) 29 ( -- ) What Kind Of Fool (Do You Think I Am) - Tams 30 ( 24 ) Baby Don't You Weep - Garnet Mimms & The Enchanters (#11)
-- ( 25 ) Hippy Hippy Shake - Swinging Blue Jeans (#8) -- ( 28 ) Drag City - Jan & Dean (#13) -- ( 29 ) Surfin' Bird - Trashmen (#18)
Manfred Mann climbs to #3 squeezing the Searchers out of the top 3 but the notable feature of the chart is the high entry at #5. It's an instrumental track, and one you are likely to know, even if you don't recognise the title and artist. Not the original version, but in the USA this reached #4 and was the biggest hit version of the tune. Allen Toussaint wrote it and performed it as a piano "ragtime" tune. The Al Hirt version is played on a trumpet. Al Hirt died in 1999 (aged 76), Allen Toussaint died only 3 months ago, aged 77.
Otherwise it's a fairly quiet week for new hits.

The Beach Boys finally emerge with one of their "classics" to get this week's highest entry, followed behind by two British divas, and English pop group and two male American singers. Although Roy Orbison's last couple of singles have stumbled into this chart, there are two big ones coming up from him...

I don't have any prejustice against cover versions in my chart, usually I prefer them to originals. Even don't know Paris Sisters' version. Teen Queens version is my favourite.
Kathy Kirby was very good pop singer, sadly most retro British female singers (50s, 60s, 70s) are forgotten now and even their deathes (Kathy, Lynsey De Paul e.t.c) can't bring any interest from newcomers to their pop music legacy.

My chart has lots of cover versions. What happened back then though was that you'd get a song and lots of different singers recording similar versions, e.g. "Anyone Who Had A Heart": there were 3 versions in the UK top 50 at one point. "Bobby's Girl": the UK and US charted different versions both getting to #3.
As I combine both charts I pick one version and go with it. I picked Marcie Blane over Susan Maughan because it was superior, even though it actually appeared a couple of weeks later. Otherwise it's usually whichever came first, unless I really prefer the later version in which case I'll wait for it. With Anyone Who Had A Heart I think I just decided to go for the "original". They are both good singers although the recording I have of the Dionne Warwick one seems a bit weak. Cilla Black did reach my chart with "Love Of the Loved" and will have more hits down the line, although she might be fighting Warwick again for "You're My World".
The Beatles appear in 1964 with their own version of "Do You Want To Know A Secret". I already charted Billy J Kramer's version.
And of course I am going to allow Joe Cocker's version of "With A Little Help From My Friends" as it is totally different from the original.
"Just One Look" was a hit in my chart for Doris Troy so isn't a Hollies hit now. I did suggest that after 6 or 7 years the song can be revived, which means in 1974 I'll be open for all those songs that appeared near the end of last year (A Walkin' Miracle, Hey There Lonely Boy/Girl, I'm Leaving It Up To You).
My current 1964 playlist has several songs that were hits when covered later: Move Over Darlin', Viva Las Vegas, My Boy(/Girl) Lollipop, The Shoop Shoop Song...

Quite surprised to see you chart Cliff's Lonely One so highly. That was his worst performance in years if you can call only reaching the bottom of the top 10 that!

The Beatles were taking off big-time in the USA and more hits are appearing there than are credited in the UK. Thus they get a hit with "I Saw Her Standing There". The only other two entries are by artists who recently had hits with Lennon/McCartney songs but not this time around. The Rolling Stones hit is a cover of Buddy Holly and is very Bo Diddley in its style. Billy J Kramer's second UK #1 is not so popular for me as his first but does scrape in.
Mary Wells's "classic" is on my current playlist and I'm sure will be a hit. James Brown will have far better to come too.
Al Hirt and Simply Red are exclusive in one aspect in my chart. Can anybody work out what that is?

The Beatles crash to #1 in the chart this week, although in some ways it is lucky to get there, having good timing, as both this week and next week see massive new hits entering.
The wonderful pop song "Tell Me When" by the Applejacks, a new beat group, enters at #3.
Not such a new name at #5, but his first song to reach this chart. Will we still need him when he's 62? Yes we will. This is also the song that finally ended the Beatles domination of the chart in the US (i.e. a period when they at one point had all of the top 5). It is notable that at the start of the song "Hello Dolly", he pronounces his name "Lewis" rather than "Louie".
After beat-group-pop and jazz-swing, we have blues-soul entering at #14 showing the diversity of music. Other hits are "wall of sound" and "twangy guitar instrumental". No room for the King but don't worry too much, he has 2 songs on the next playlist plus an impersonator doing one of his songs, and whilst one of his own ones isn't going to make it, the other two both will.

I have missed a couple of days of posting these but have not got behind on the playlist and score-up.
14 March 1964:
1 ( 3 ) Tell Me When - Applejacks < 1st #1 > 2 ( 1 ) I Saw Her Standing There - Beatles (#1[1]) 3 ( 5 ) Hello Dolly - Louis Armstrong 4 ( -- ) My Boy Lollipop - Millie 5 ( 2 ) Java - Al Hirt (#1[4]) 6 ( -- ) Move Over Darling - Doris Day 7 ( -- ) Viva Las Vegas - Elvis Presley 8 ( 14 ) Hi-Heel Sneakers - Tommy Tucker 9 ( 4 ) 5-4-3-2-1 - Manfred Mann (#2[3]) 10 ( 8 ) Not Fade Away - Rolling Stones (#8)
11 ( -- ) World Without Love - Peter And Gordon 12 ( 16 ) That Girl Belongs To Yesterday - Gene Pitney 13 ( 18 ) I Wonder - Crystals 14 ( 7 ) Fun Fun Fun - Beach Boys (#5) 15 ( 6 ) Green Fields - Unit Four Plus Two (#3) 16 ( 10 ) Bits And Pieces - Dave Clark Five (#8) 17 ( 22 ) Theme For Young Lovers - Shadows 18 ( 13 ) Stay Awhile - Dusty Springfield (#13) 19 ( -- ) Blue Winter - Connie Francis 20 ( 12 ) Let Me Go Lover - Kathy Kirby (#11)
21 ( 9 ) I'm The Lonely One - Cliff Richard (#3) 22 ( 15 ) Over You - Freddie & The Dreamers (#15) 23 ( 11 ) A Million Drums - Tony Sheveton (#6) 24 ( -- ) Mary Jane - Del Shannon 25 ( 23 ) Little Children - Billy J Kramer & The Dakotas (#23) 26 ( 20 ) Navy Blue - Diane Renay (#19) 27 ( 21 ) Nadine - Chuck Berry (#20) 28 ( 17 ) Needles And Pins - Searchers (#3) 29 ( 24 ) Abigail Beecher - Freddy Cannon (#23) 30 ( -- ) My Heart Belongs To Only You - Bobby Vinton
-- ( 19 ) Dawn (Go Away) - Four Seasons (#10) -- ( 25 ) California Sun - Rivieras (#15) -- ( 26 ) Boys Cry - Eden Kane (#6) -- ( 27 ) Borne On The Wind - Roy Orbison (#26) -- ( 28 ) Baby I Love You - Ronettes (#1[4]) -- ( 29 ) Diane - Bachelors (#6) -- ( 30 ) I'm The One - Gerry & The Pacemakers (#6)
-- ( -- ) If He Tells You - Adam Faith
This is the point where the quality has gone sky-high, there are loads of songs that might have been #1 at some other time and they can't all be.
The Applejacks dislodge the Beatles after just one week and there are a lot of big entries this week, including a fine return for Elvis after some poor efforts, and the first 60s hit for Doris Day who was very popular during the 1950s. But then Kathy Kirby did just cover her big hit "Secret Love" perhaps inspiring her to make a comeback herself. This song reached #8 for her, and Tracey Ullman revived it in 1983.
The highest entry is from Jamaican born Millie (Small) with her classic hit (also covered, by Bad Manners in 1982).
Songs are entering my chart by the date they entered either the UK top 50 or US top 30. Millie took her time to climb to #2 in the UK, whereas Peter & Gordon got to #1 a bit quicker, and the Beatles with "Can't Buy Me Love" even quicker still which indicates why that hasn't appeared here yet. They'll have a task to get that song past this lot...

21 ( 14 ) Fun Fun Fun - Beach Boys (#5) 22 ( 30 ) My Heart Belongs To Only You - Bobby Vinton 23 ( 16 ) Bits And Pieces - Dave Clark Five (#8) 24 ( 18 ) Stay Awhile - Dusty Springfield (#13) 25 ( 15 ) Green Fields - Unit Four Plus Two (#3) 26 ( -- ) I Believe - Bachelors 27 ( 25 ) Little Children - Billy J Kramer & The Dakotas (#23) 28 ( 20 ) Let Me Go Lover - Kathy Kirby (#11) 29 ( 22 ) Over You - Freddie & The Dreamers (#15) 30 ( 26 ) Navy Blue - Diane Renay (#19)

The top end of the chart is very "crowded" and we see last week's entries not making as much progress as they might have done. Joining Elvis in that crowd is Terry Stafford's version of "Suspicion", a song Elvis had recorded about 2 years earlier but was not released as a single for him. It would eventually be a hit single for Elvis in the UK chart in January 1977, and was, until the time I did retro charts, his first ever NM hit.
Two of this week's entries were UK #1s in the 1990s. The Shoop Shoop song for Cher in 1991, when it was used in "Mermaids", and entering quite low down here we have the "forgotten" version of "I Believe". Frankie Laine was #1 with it for 18 weeks in 1953, and of course Robson & Jerome had a go at reviving it too. The Bachelors version peaked at #2 for one week after several weeks at #3. It probably wouldn't have reached this chart a few weeks ago, but although we have a lot of strong songs in the last few weeks, we also don't find ourselves with that many and so it does find its way into the chart.
In between, we have another old song "Mocking Bird Hill", originally written in 1951, and a new entry by the Temptations, just in case we thought their career had finished in 1960 with "Barbara"... Maybe there'll be a few more from them..
